Hey Everyone!
Anyone have ideas on a middle of the road beginner fishing pole? Anything you would specifically look into buying to get started?
I have looked on the internet. Just looking for thoughts and conversation.

Ugly stick, and a Penn pursuit. Can't go wrong
And honestly any 35 to 70 dollar combo from Cabelas would be fine as a starter.

It depends on what you want to fish for. What do you have in mind?

It really depends on what you are fishing for. Bass fishing? Trout fishing? Brook? River? Lake? Ocean?King salmon? Deep sea fishing?
Get the best most comfortable rig for you for what you are fishing for.
Also, what Notarealguy said. Any decent all around rig will get you started for small to medium fish.
A decent rig will last you a lifetime.

My neighbor recommends "stinky bait" so named cuz people wear gloves when handling it. He regularly feeds the fish from his dock just for fun but they're around when the kids want to try their luck.

Fishing is pretty hard except to try 100s of times before getting a fish. I cast in different areas but some times of year are better for fishing. I like bass a lot they tend to come to the shore around spring to lay eggs. They will attack anything that threatens the eggs so there really easily caught at that time of year but I only ever seen any bigger than 5lb in North and South Carolina but I only fished there, Colorado and Michigan. The bass like this stuff a lot you just let it drop and real in upwards it attracts them I always use green and that brand. I also catch rainbow and brown trout in the Colorado river with fly fishing this is best in a river but I sometimes do it from shore casting into a lake and you do catch a lot more fish just usually small ones and it’s harder to cast fly fishing. They also like this stuff a lot you just hook it and toss it out with a bobber but you can’t fish rivers so good. I really like southern blue catfish the biggest I got was a 24 pound fish but I caught a 27 pound flathead catfish before but there no good to eat and they got sand paper teeth they can rip your arm up if they bite and spin. I get them with tinny fish I kill and chop into pieces it works well chanel catfish are good eating too.
I just moved to MI in the fall I don’t have a license so I fish a tiny pond in the woods I catch lots of sunfish and bullheads but I throw them back the ponds a bit dirty. I would really like to go to the Great Lake to catch a sturgeon.

I caught a moray eal in Florida. It moved itself up the line as it hung there above the water at the end of the rod and removed the hook from it's own mouth.

I usually use a little steel line to prevent the line from snapping with teeth. I have caught shark in NC I take a minnow and hook him in the back with a pyramid lead sinker and toss him out. The live fish gets lots of attention but dead shrimp works too. Once I got a stingray with a shrimp. I love flounder fish they like that stuff too. On my bucket list is a marlin of the gulf cost a tigerfish in Africa a Spanish wels catfish and a Mekong catfish in Asia. There big fish though. I wouldn’t eat any except the marlin and tigerfish usually big catfish have tougher meat. Plus the Mekong catfish is like sacred or something. I love the show river monsters.

I met some fishermen who used steel line fishing for alligators. I don't know what bait they used but the boat wasn't in good shape "It's seen a lot of blood" they said.

I honestly don't have anything in particular in mind. I have been seeing people being able to ride their bikes on a local trail and fish at a pretty calm river. I am most looking for simple and universal. Nothing crazy until I get further into the hobby. Does that make sense?

I own a Martin classic fly rod it works ok I had a Orivis rod but it broke I hit a tree casting and it snapped. But the one I currently have is cheap $30 and it includes everything you need. https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=L&ai=DChcSEwia7ruj44L1AhX8yZQJHSquANgYABAJGgJ5bQ&ae=2&sig=AOD64_3r95uTQ_eIVXuypLdgdwnBoTsTxQ&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwjqgbGj44L1AhWNjYkEHe7TD7wQwg96BAgBECo&dct=1&adurl= But you’ll need to learn to tie knots well.

This looks great! Youtube should be able to give me the basics of knot tying so I am going to look into it.

Check out your local pawn shops and search Craigslist for gear. The local aftermarket would have gear focused on your local conditions and targeted species. Which it sounds like your wanting to hit up a river so trout would most likely be your primary target fish. Light tackle with 8lbs test line and a handful of spinners or spoons would be a great start.

My favorite set up is a telescopic pole that packs down small for backcountry lakes & streams- using a black and gold Panther Martin spinner.

An improved clinch knot is very easy to tie and holds well.
