Looking for advice on car audio * 1
    #27657562 - 02/13/22 01:44 PM (1 year, 11 months ago)

I’m tired of cruising around in my ‘80s era POS with no tunes. And since all I have where a radio should be is a blank space & some random snipped wires, I’d like to install something simple that will allow me to play music through an aux input.

Can I just buy a small, affordable (preamp?) & hook it up to my speakers/battery?

I’ve never done any audio work, but I’ve MacGyvered lots of wires in my vehicle (brakes, aux battery, 12v sockets, etc). I just want to be able to blast some Shpongle into the world.

Ooh that's gonna be tough without the connector that went to the original radio. You should be able to get a wiring diagram that shows which wires run to what and connect it to your new deck accordingly though, no?

I think the Chilton's manuals had the wiring diagram iirc

What year, make and model car?  What's your budget?  You have lots of options here.

Oh and you can get a Bluetooth deck from Walmart for like $35 so you don't have to use an aux cable and can just play from your phone, much better for driving. Of course the sound quality isn't gonna be top notch but my wife got one and it works great...

Might I suggest a DC to AC inverter at least 400 watts or so depending on what you decide to run. It simply connects to your battery leads and you can run the wires through the firewall to below your dash. You can run a sound bar which I have pondered doing if coupled with a sound bar sub the combo should run under 400 watts and you can just Bluetooth to it, or you can get a guitar amp of sorts and plug that in the same way and connect to it using an aux cord.

If you're gonna go that route and run cables to your battery, get one that's more than 400w. You can get 300w ones that run off your cigarettes lighter and don't need to wire to the battery.

Reason I said that was because I have a 300 watt amp (actually ~270w) but anyway the 300 watt cigarette inverter kept cutting out I'm assuming because it was nearing peak power, so I'd stay away from those unless you're well within range that would be a great cost effect way to go. I got mine from a buddy with a spare, either way I don't have a radio either but enjoy my tunes :p Give us an update when you make a decision as I'm curious

No I wasn't saying not to get the 400 watt one that connects to your battery, I was just saying if you're going to have to run cables to your battery, you might as well get like a 1000 watt one to make sure you can run everything you need.  Definitely not gonna run much of an amp off a cigarette lighter one.

I love how y’all think, but we’re talking about a single cab toyota pickup. It came from the factory with two 4”(?) speakers & that’s it. I don’t have room for much else lol.

My speaker wires are also missing tho so I’d still have to run those if I put a radio in anyway, & I don’t really listen to the radio, so...

I also have a 2nd battery I’m plannin on running whatever I go with to. I’d like to spend less than $100 cuz there’s no point in getting something super nice & connecting it to oversized headphones. Am I correct in assuming a little preamp I can set in the hole in my dash would work?

Ok gotcha, so you're gonna need to rewire totally.  Shouldn't be a big deal.

I just don't honestly know what a preamp is and how it differs from just a cheap deck.

Buy the cheap deck from walmart for $30, it has an aux input and bluetooth.

Run the yellow wire from the deck to your battery with around a 10amp fuse.  Black to ground.  But you have to run the red wire to "ignition" so that it turns on when your car does and off when you turn the car off.  If you can't do that, I think you can just cap off the red wire and put a switch on your yellow wire and power it on/off manually (although if you forget, it will drain your car battery obviously).  If you cap off the red wire and the deck won't power on with just the yellow, you might have to splice the red wire in with the yellow before it runs to the fuse then battery, in order for the unit to get power.  I can't remember which way you have to do it... but it's not hard to figure out.

Then just run the speaker wires to whatever speakers you want.  Should be that easy, all the other wires coming from your deck will be unnecessary to make it run.  Cap off any you don't need so they don't short out.

Cheap speakers and you should be able to keep this well under $100 easily.

It should be easy to find a harness for your year Toyota.  The sniped wires your seeing are probably from the previous stereo and with any luck they are still working.  What year is the truck?  Even without the harness you should still use the wires that are available.

Harness off Ebay $20
Head Unit $35
Speakers $35
Speaker Wire $5

Just enough left over for a 6 pack to install it with.

OR, you could go with a portable Blue Tooth speaker and a cigarette lighter USB adapter.

:whathesaid:

And I forgot about the 6 pack, but you should definitely still be able to fit that in the budget whether you have to rewire like I said above, or can figure out how to use existing. Either way it should be pretty easy.

Its definitely going to take a lot of work to get a working stereo since your speaker wires are missing. Gonna have to do a full rewire to your speakers.

What sort of budget do you have?

No I think Gabba might be right about just finding a harness and using existing wires, it should be possible, no?

Perhaps, assuming all the speaker wiring is intact. Some photos of inside the DIN deck bay would help.

Even if you had to rewire for the speakers, that should be easy in a small truck like that. Just finding the power and ignition connections would help greatly.

I had all the snipped wires decoded at one point (stole the ignition/power for a small clock). Guess I just need to break down & buy some stuff. If y’all have any specific suggestions for speakers/ heads/ whatev let me know.

My 10 year old aux battery finally crapped out on me the other day, so I’ve got to replace that first. Might be a hot minute.
