To what extent to y'all think our recent foray back into the cold war era feels nostalgic to people over 40 and to what extent do you believe that nostalgia is influencing both policy and public opinion?

Yea, absolutely. Also, after 2 years of twisting and screeching and arguing about covid, I think a lot of folks are just happy to have something else to talk about. A nice well-worn blanket to wrap yourself in- clear good-guys and bad-guys, three cheers to glorious victory.
I was talking to older family members about this- They grew up with duck-n-cover, feeling serious threat of nuclear war. I don't think my generation feels the same fear about that, we grew up with 9/11 and Iraq war-mongering over yellow cake, so are sort of dismissive of the idea. The younger generations are freaking out because they never learned the concept of MAD.

The mix of Russiagate-obsessed lib millennials and Cold War pants-pissing boomers has created a vortex of war fervor.
Luckily, the US doesn’t just march into wars without just cause or a clear goal or really any plan at all.

My father is a Vietnam vet. We drank some bourbon and talked about this at length.
He is not in anyway interested in more cold war, or really any war. He has zero nostalgia for any of it. Of course he was drafted, so...

Do we have a choice here ? I'm kinda having a hard time thinking if we had done nothing in Europe and NATO didn't exist that Russia would have just been cool and kept to themselves . Did they feel so stupid after supporting Hitler they just decided it wasn't a good idea anymore?

By nostalgia, I just mean the comfort inherent in familiar things, not necessarily fond memories of a specific time

I always thought war with Russia would go down like in that movie Spies Like Us . We would just accidentally nuke each other in my sleep and I would be blissfully vaporized into dust because of some comical espionage I never knew about . To think I may have to watch us slowly blunder our way into nuclear armageddon over the course of a month or so seems excruciating . I feel like I'm going to get up every day and things are going to be a little worse until the news says the nukes are flying tomorrow around noon.

We won't get into a shooting war over Ukraine and Putin won't push the reset button for less than a land invasion of Russia so I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.

The whole culture war "left vs right" thing we've got going on in the US seems small and petty compared to what's happening in the world lately.

Idk about nostalgia but it's nice to have a thing that most of us can agree on. It's been awhile since most of my family and most of my social circle can agree on politically. I also think that the 2 or 3 people I know that are pro Russia/dgaf are just being contrarian. Always somebody whose gotta be "different"
