The console war that mattered? * 4
    #27671887 - 02/24/22 03:19 PM (1 year, 10 months ago)

I mean obviously Genesis vs SNES, but for you younglings (or older people)- Which was the console war that actually mattered?

The Playstation kicked the shit out of the N64 and yet I was on team Nintendo for life at that point. Anything afterwards I was just too old to care (at the wise age of 10 or so).

Which console wars that came later really inspired anything close to the intensity of the Sega/Nintendo thing in the 90s, if any?

I wouldn't say the PS1 kicked the shit out of the N64. The PS1 just has a ridiculously large library because they were easier to develop for. Some titles for both consoles were absolutely better on the N64, such as the wrestling games.

Nintendo turned to shit after the super nes. Everything they have come out with after that has been pure garbage. I mean in the era of Cd's your still coming out with a crappy 64-bit cartridge based system with horrible blocky graphics and inferior sound. Give me a break! This was this era of the CD with CD quality sound and full motion video for Pete's sake!

Then during the year of the DVD based game systems they come out with that shitty game cube with those low memory mini discs, what a joke!

Then we have the biggest fad of the century, the Wii which was mildly entertaining, I admit, but for how long?

Also, every system they have come out with since the game cube has the exact same dated graphics all the way up the Switch. those Switch games could easily be made on a game cube or Wii.

And how is Nintendo able to continue making sub par gaming systems with outdated graphics, and horrible games? I'll tell you why, It's because of the name Nintendo and Mario, and that is all. It has brainwashed people into thinking that they are still a good company which in fact I'm surprised they are even still making systems with their inferior dated hardware, and horrible boring kiddie games!

I loved Sega, and if anybody should be gone it should be Nintendo, not SEGA!

That's my two cents worth

No way in hell. The only reason Sega even managed to push its way into limelight was because of it's 'cool edgy persona' it capitalised on in addition to allowing more gore in games in light of Nintendo's aim for 'G rating' status.
Nintendo didn't need to rely on marketing gymics. They exist to this day for a reason and it's because Nintendo know how to make games with ingenious mechanics that suck the players into wanting more.
Yeah sure Sonic offered fast paces action that had not been seen before that offered a lot of initial excitement to players. That's why Street Fighter 2 released turbo soon after. It's a gymic though. Once you've done it, that's it. Looks good at first but doesn't offer the same excitement over an extended time.
What Nintendo does well is offer multiple ways to explore a world making players not forced to but WANT to back track to experience a world or level or something in a new way. This thoughtfulness into the game design rather than thoughtfulness into surface attractions is what made Nintendo the more enjoyable system overall and why it still exists to this day.

I respect your opinion mate

I will still always love my NES and Super NES for life, but other than that Nintendo died on me decades ago.

looking at the console timeline it feels like PS won
but looking back at the games I'm not sure,
I think the PS1 mostly succeeded in getting sonys foot in the door and establishing business connections by being cheaper and easier to develop for

Mario 54
Zelda OoT
Zelda MM
Smash bros

Perfect dark
Banjo Kazooie
Mario Kart

In addition to Magenta's points, Nintendo still makes couch multiplayer titles. Ain't nobody busting out their Xbox when friends come over, when the Wii is an option.

The console war I grew up in was Xbox360 vs PS3. It honestly wasn't even a war. Xbox360 won by a landslide. I don't even know a single person that has a PS3.

I wasnt there to live through it, but after reading war stories, I think Genesis vs SNES was the ONLY console war. My dad was in the SNES GANG. Straight fists to whoever got a Sega console.

I think a lot of perception is based on your location and peer group
All my friends had PS3s but all my coworkers had 360s if I could have easily been unaware of either group

"Xbox 360 sold an estimated 84 million units, based on industry estimates as Microsoft stopped reported its sales, while the PlayStation 3 sold 87 million units; the Wii comparatively sold over 101 million units"

N64 had the better wrestling games and the Zelda games alone made it a better console for me, and I was a SEGA kid growing up. Hell, I even had the fucking SATURN during the PS1 era.

The other problem with the PS1 for me was the sheer amount of games alone. Probability dictates a lot of lackluster titles. I remember renting some shitty games with friends like Courier Crises and Xeno Gears for the PS1.

SoTN is my fave PS1 title.

Yeah I agree: the SNES was literally a Super Nintendo: same basic premise in a more stable design, all the best franchises writ large, an expanded yet still-simple selection of controller buttons, deeper gameplay, and way more powerful across all the specs that mattered.

After that, there was always some kind of compromise: N64 blew me away as a kid, but in spite of a handful of great exclusives it got dominated by PS1's vast, inexpensive library and overall better design. Instead of being a distinct improvement in every way, N64 WAS grainy, low-FPS mush compared to SNES or even PS1, which had its own gritty look with low-res particles and texture warping...but didn't seem to chug as badly as N64. Nintendo lost its licensing dominance as devs took advantage of a system with up to 10X the storage at the cost of a CD versus expensive licensed ROM chips. Some games even spread content over 2 CDs: sure N64 also got Resident Evil 2 several years later, but it took the max memory and some incredible technical wizardry to make that happen; as popular as it was, nobody would've released it as two cartridges! These days, I appreciate the durability of its cartridges, but that damn ridiculous controller with its awful analog stick is the main reason why I barely even play my N64 anymore.

GameCube was a little weird: I had no plans on getting one but my older sister and her BF surprised me with one for Christmas one year(!). They got mine with a carrying case that holds like 20 games, 2 memory cards and 4 controllers. When it came out it felt kinda junior for its lack of network support and DVD drive, but these days it's a great little pick-up-and-go machine for a roomful of people around a TV. That generation had lots of retro collections like the old Sonic and MegaMan games and fun stuff like TimeSplitters 2 and Resident Evil 4, but aside from Metroid Prime the first-party exclusives were pretty shitty if you don't love crap like Smash Bros or Mario Party. It was like they couldn't make a game without strapping shit to their characters' backs (Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Starfox Adventures and Mario Kart Double Dash feel like half-hearted gimmicks that don't hold up within their franchises). Obviously PS2 ate its lunch but I enjoy the 'Cube.

Haven't bothered with a console since. Wii is cool and you'd think it would just supersede the GameCube, but honestly it's a hassle having to menu around pointing that stupid dildo instead of just grabbing a controller. Plus its shop is gone forever which totally blows. It did some cool stuff for accessibility in gaming, but also piles of plastic landfill crap everywhere and tons of shovelware. Wii-U was a pure shithead idea, and the Switch is like a little kids' toy with tiny flimsy controllers. Each of these feel about half as powerful as the competitors' offerings and desperately relies on Nintendo's software legacy; without their back-catalogue and franchises they'd be fucked, and most of that is emulation they stole back AKA pointless to buy when I either own or emulate my favorite old games.

I was around then on the Nintendo side, and old EGM and GamePro magazines are FULL of Nintendo's marketing gymnastics (I don't think 'gymic' is a word) because they did have a pretty slow CPU compared to the Genesis which came out 2 years prior. Funny thing though: I love slowdown in this era of games because it always comes in your most intense, desperate gaming moments when shit is flying around everywhere! FREE SLO-MO!
Anyways, like actual war, innovation bloomed in the wake of fierce competition and we got some incredible games out of both the SNES and Genesis. I can finally admit that Genesis is 100% worth owning if you loved SNES and has tons of great exclusives. I still think the SNES has a broader scope of sound and brighter better graphics, but chugs playing stuff like the cutscenes in Flashback that Genesis just breezes through.
I think your analysis of Genesis VS SNES is more of a comparison between Sonic and Mario themselves: Sonic is tailored to be a dizzying combination of platformer and pinball with beautiful sound design and slot-machine noises that hits you right in the dopamine receptors like a casino. Mario is a big open adventure with tons of creative maps that set the stage for its rock-solid platforming mechanics. Personally I can always go back to Super Mario World and the Sonic games, but Sonic feels so linear, and its mix of platforming and speed sometimes feel like opposing concepts that don't always mesh past the first few acts.
