Putin's excuse for invading Ukraine is pure bullshit. He wants to control Ukraine through a puppet government, like the
one that was in Kyiv prior to Zelenskyj. His "magic trick" is to establish conflict in border regions of a country, like Donbas
in Ukraine, or South Ossetia in Georgia. This way the countries in question are off limits for closer relationships with NATO or EU.
Ukraine and Georgia are countries whose people have a strong affinity towards Western Europe. Putin wants them to be in his "fold", though.

Putin is a permanent danger to peace in Eurasia. He is a permanent danger also to his own country.
This invasion is probably part of a bigger plan. He wants to go back to the Soviet regime.
He was bred and nurtured through the seventies and eighties as a KGB agent, and he sees
the downfall of Soviet as a great humiliation of all he believed in.

At this point I can't see anything that Russia can gain that comes close to what they are going to lose. The extent of the sanctions have gone beyond anyone's expectations. Russians with money are leaving the country. The war is not popular at home. NATO is going to expand. Germany just doubled their defense budget. Putin is doing a better job of destroying Russia than destroying Ukraine. It's going to require a lot more repression at home for him to retain his power. Who would have dreamed he could miscalculated this that badly?

Russia just issued some demands. They include:

Quote:

Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was demanding that Ukraine cease military action, change its constitution to enshrine neutrality, acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory, and recognise the separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent states.

It was the most explicit Russian statement so far of the terms it wants to impose on Ukraine to halt what it calls its "special military operation", now in its 12th day.

I think Putin was planning on trump being in the white house, and once that failed, hoped Biden would be as demented as Republican propaganda claims.

He has definitely become much less popular recently. I can't say he was particularly popular among my people before, but nobody makes fun of me for trump anymore.

Russia has all the cards in there hand. Especially since they got the west hooked on there oil an gas. Thoe people are complaining about gas prices. When gas is much cheaper today than in the 70s in 80s really gas is not expensive at all.

There was a good interview on NPR this morning and the conclusion was that this war is erasing all the progress they made in the last twenty years. And I agree. Even if they take Ukraine they have set themselves back massively. I wonder how long Putin will last at this point. If the war turns in the quagmire it appears to be, there just doesn't seem to be any good way forward for Russia. Of course Ukraine, as we know it, will be forever lost as well.

Because we don't understand someone's decisions doesn't mean they are insane or dumb.

We can speculate all day about Putin's strategy, but it's all just fantasy.

Putin is mad. Putin is frustrated. Putin is scared. Putin is a failure. Putin is stupid.

sounds a lot like another popular fantasy narrative

I feel like people have periods of genius in their lives , and moments complete idiocy .
It's easy to look at Hitler and some of his accomplishments and say wow dude was a genius , evil , but smart . Then you can look at the things he didn't achieve and say the opposite .

Putin is a dictator. A despot. A tyrant. Full stop. There are no excuses.

He has consolidated his power by sly determination, step by step.
How is this possible, one might ask. Well, it seems that people who
might have had the possibility and power to change this course, have
either bought his lies or succumbed to the fear of reprisals.
Both inside Russia and abroad.

We know that several people have paid a high price for their courage and defiance.
A handy tool for Mr. Putin, poisoning a few people here, throwing others in jail there.
He can silence thousands that way without having to kill or arrest them.

And then of course there is business and money, oligarchs investing craploads
of money in real estate throughout the world. Check Kensington in London, for instance.
Fisheries in my own country, which the government refuses to make sanctions against.
The word "fifth column" comes to mind.

Listen to Putin's statements/speeches and he makes it very clear why they went through with this operation. Their reasons actually make sense, and I doubt they feel the need to lie.

-Ukraine had assembled an invasion force of ~130,000 soldiers that was getting ready to invade and completely smash Donbass, in which case Russia would have been forced to intervene anyway. The Russian operation pre-empted Ukraine's military offensive by only a week or two.

-Ukraine's continuous threats to Crimea and refusal to declare neutrality. Ukraine joining NATO would have guaranteed a world war in the future.

-Ukraine's threats to acquire nuclear weapons - which they were apparently already working on covertly, with US assistance. Zelensky's comments about pulling out of the Budapest memorandum only made this threat more serious in the minds of Russian leadership.

The first point alone is enough to justify the operation. Without Russian intervention, it would have been a massacre in Donbass - which houses some ~1 million civilians. DPR/LPR defenses might have held, but at what cost? If the Ukrainians had broken through the defense lines, the radicalized volunteer battalions would simply have murdered any civilians they came across. It would have been a huge bloodbath.

It's unfortunate that war now has to encompass the whole Ukraine. However, for 8 years a blind eye was turned to the continuous and reckless slaughter of people in Donetsk and Luhansk. Nobody tried to stop it. Nobody raised a hand to the volunteer Nazi militias. Nobody cared about these people for 8 years. Well, if Ukraine had wanted to avoid a war they should have stopped threatening these people with complete annihilation. They had 8 years to subscribe to the peace process. Instead, they threatened some 1 million people with genocide and chose the path of war.

The people in Ukraine need to immediately condemn/reject the neo-nazi groups that forced this war, are still killing civilians even now and hold their politicians - especially Zelensky - accountable for bringing this war to their doorsteps.

You keep saying that Russia would have to intervene in Ukraine's war within their own borders.

Nope, no need for Putin in intervene.

You're just repeating Putin's lies. And the war is not "unfortunate" - it's disastrous. For Ukraine, of course, but also for Russia.

The main reason for Putin to attack Ukraine is that Zelenskyj refuses to be a Moscow puppet.
The last time a Ukrainian leader tried to defy Putin, he was poisoned with Dioxine.

"Neutrality" in Putin terms is "follow my orders". Which means to turn away from so-called Western values.

Putin has no excuses or reasons for attacking Ukraine, or any other neighbor for that matter.
And if his corrupt minions haven't fucked up too much, he will face trial at the International Court in Hague.
Although I fear he won't go voluntarily. Maybe he'll rather take a consultation with Doctor Novichok.

I see the Ruble has lost like 50% of its value, and it appears the stock market is likely going to be closed for a long time. If they reopen the markets and it all tanks, which it will, there are going to be a lot of pissed off rich people.
