It's worth being aware of, as it's a pretty prevalent cognitive bias.

Here's an example: I get most of my information through anarchist media, while you (presumably) rarely use these sources.

Now, when it's time to answer a question on Ukraine, I'll seek out my usual anarchist sources to read the various perspectives. On the other hand, you seek out sources that share your perspective, and one of these happens to be an anarchist one.

The answer I arrive at, while biased towards anarchism, isn't necessarily biased towards a specific answer - whereas in your case, confirmation bias means that your answer is biased towards your beliefs. To rephrase it, my search parameters are "what are other anarchists saying?" while your search parameters are "what are the people who confirm my beliefs saying?"

The end result is that we selectively and unconsciously filter out information before we ever even have a chance to process it - like you filtering out the countless dissenting perspectives of former politicians, to amplify one that agrees with you. We'll always be partially vulnerable to cognitive biases, as it's how our brains work, but being aware of how these processes play out is one way to minimize their impact.

No, I don't think they're equal.  I was pointing out that putting missiles near a border, and sending a US Navy Destroyer near a border are both threatening, since you disingenuously said "That's it?"

What threat does a destroyer pose near Russian territory?  Really???

You should tell the US Navy you don't think their destroyers don't threaten anyone.

My point is that opinion of "the former deputy Foreign Minister of New Zealand for arms Control" is no more relevant than the thousands of other former politicians living in NATO-affiliated nations. The only reason this individual has been singled out is because they agree with what you believe.

Unless you have a different reason for singling him out?

I singled him out be he concisely explained why he thinks we should thank Russia for fighting NATO.  I share his view because his explanation made sense.

I disagree.  I'll take ANY source when their argument makes sense and is rational (see my signature).  Sometimes, even Tucker Carlson (who I generally disagree with), makes sense.  If I post something from him, it doesn't mean I support everything he says, it means I support what I just posted.

Others see Tucker Carlson and freak out because he's said a few dumb things before.

Was the escort boat within 12 nautical miles of the Russian coast at the time of the supposed threat?

https://www.un.org/depts/los/LEGISLATIONANDTREATIES/PDFFILES/RUS_1998_Act_TS.pdf
Quote:

1. The territorial sea of the Russian Federation (hereinafter referred to as “the territorial sea”) is the sea belt adjacent to the land
territory or internal maritime waters, whose breadth is 12 nautical miles measured from the baselines referred to in article 4 of this
Federal Act.

Do you have some evidence to support your claim that the U.S. is bombing anyone in Donbas or is that more make-believe?

I meant Russia wanted to stop the bombing of ethnic Russians in Donbas.

I've done it many times.  Here's one.

I'm bored and I watched the whole thing.

It's the one where Mr Ritter repeatedly says all the Finns will die in nuclear fire if they attempt to defend themselves and they are a democracy and should recall their leaders if they attempt to join NATO which is ironic because Russians aren't allowed to do anything of the sort.

It's pretty hilarious in that the whole time you watch it you wonder what kind of kiddie diddler video the FSB has on him.

How does a Russian naval vessel leave the Black Sea without violating NATO territorial waters? are they allowed to pass through the Bosphorus? Are any of Russia’s ships seaworthy?

Good point m. He’s probably a legit Putin fanboi, which probably only increases the chances that Russian operatives sent 12 year old girls to his hotel room at some point. No way that dude could resist.

I’m pretty sure I remember that around the time that Ritter was getting attention before the Iraq war, rumors of his child fucking related activities started circulating, and he accused the media of trying to ruin his reputation because he was challenging the US govt claims about WMD. That didn’t age well.

Have you noticed that some of the same people who have zero tolerance for the pedos in every other context, are giving this convicted baby rapist a pass.

The idea in your signature is completely unrelated to confirmation bias - I think you should try a little harder to understand the concept before saying you disagree.

How did you stumble upon this "former deputy Foreign Minister of New Zealand for arms Control"? Were you contrasting and comparing the opinions of various former politicians until you arrived at the best argument - or were you searching for people who have an argument that supports your beliefs?

The former is a systematic review of ALL available relevant evidence on a particular research question; an exploratory process - whereas the latter is searching for evidence consistent with the current hypothesis; a confirmatory process. Exploratory thought neutrally considers multiple points of view and tries to anticipate all possible objections to a particular position, while confirmatory thought seeks to justify a specific point of view.

This isn't an accusation - cognitive biases are an unavoidable aspect of human cognition - but we can limit the negative effects if we know how these processes play out.

Thank you for exposing yourself as seriously lacking any kind of intelligence or ability to listen to reason. Much appreciated. Maybe you should join your bro's in Finland and fight on the side of the Nazi's like they did in 1939.

Right now all of Europe is siding with the modern incarnation of Nazism in Ukraine with the sole exception of maybe Hungary.

The whole "but they're Nazis!" argument would hold a lot more water if they would also feign concern about Putler's fascist tendencies. :cookiemonster:
