Sounds like that might also be a good area to look for caerulipes later on in the season.

Anyone find ovoids in zones 4a or 4b? If so, when would that season start?

I'm also interested in this as I'm starting to loose hope in 5a.

If you overlay the occurrence map from mushroomobserver onto the USDA zone map, all of the finds in the Northeast sofar are confined to zones 6 or warmer..

It could be there are others who have found them on here and not posted on MO that I'm not aware of? Could be lack of people looking or it could also just be a little too cold?

Damn. I'm not giving up hope on MN psilocybe yet though. I wonder if aztecorum or fuscofulva could occur here πŸ€” I do think there are less mushroom hunters in the midwest/north just because lower population density maybe. I haven't had luck finding semilanceata yet either. I found copriphila last year, those aren't active tho.

Got many Beech trees out your way? If so maybe try looking for caerulipes twords the end of summer as they are an extremely cold hardy species. The only actives I've seen reported from that state so far are Gym.luteus, Pan.cinctulus, and Pluteus americanus, but there may be others out there hiding still. Cincts should be relatively easy to find if nothing else.

P. fuscofulva almost definitely occurs there, though it isn't active sadly

Not a whole lot but they're around. We do have a lot of box elder though. Does caerulipes like box alder? I'll definitely be hunting for them either way. And if you look at the "what mushrooms grow in my state" thread it only mentions G. Luteus, Plueus amerucanus, panaeolus cinctulus, and I think psilocybe semilanceata. I think mushroomobserver.org has G. Luteofolius and luteus listed. I've found those and maybe subspectabilis and liquiritiae, although I'm not sure if that one is active. I've also found a couple different species of active pans, I think fimicola, olivaceus, and cinctulus. I've also found a few species of active pluteus. I'll upload pics.

I should probably add that I'm just getting into microscopy and don't have the best microscope so I can't really confirm anything for certain. Alan did help me identify G. Luteofolius using the cheilocystidia. I do find distinct looking species though. I'll get around to posting my finds on the forum soon though.

I will check back for them a little later.
Not sure if they occur in my area. Though I haven’t dug to deep on it.

Cerulipes are definitely on my radar.
I have to say thank you actually for posting those habitat vids in last years thread. I know of an exact area in 5a a few hours from me.

Im glad to hear you found those videos helpful. We are starting to drift a bit from Ovoids here, maybe if there is enough of us we could get a more general "northeast actives" thread going this year?

P. quebecensis is a synonym for P. aztecorum I believe. I know that others on here have had some luck. I haven't found them yet myself but I also haven't gone specifically looking either; maybe this season if I have some more time.

All of you asking about what to look for and when it grows or if it has been found in your area, should visit www.mushroomobserver.org and www.inaturalist.org to see whats been found in your area and when.

I’ve also found GBIF.org helpful as well, their data is sourced from multiple outlets and includes data from inaturalist and the like.
I also like the barebones map they use too.

I’m hoping so.

Looks like the warm soil temps are creeping up the coast, definitely going to start hunting within a week or two.
Maybe sooner!
(Disregard the location spot haha, it’s not accurate anyway:)

They do have an app, but it doesn’t show the soil temps for whatever reason.

Meteoblue.com

Open the menu bar top left and find the weather maps,
They have HELLA information.
More weather layers then you know what to do with.
