Migraine one day following moderate psilocybin dose
    #27608561 - 01/06/22 01:27 AM (2 years, 21 days ago)

Hello fellow mushroom enthusiasts,

Have any of you ever experienced a migraine headache after taking psilocybin? A few months ago I took about 2.5g of dried shrooms. I had a very pleasant trip, and the next day I felt normal. However, the day after that, I developed a very bad migraine headache.

The migraine started out with the typical aura (flickering zigzag pattern in my field of vision) which lasted about an hour, followed by a headache, brain fog, short term memory loss and drowsiness that lasted for over a month. Initially it was very uncomfortable, with pain, pressure and tension in my forehead that was so bad that I went to the emergency room. I was prescribed sumatriptan, which did not help. It actually made the headache worse, so I discontinued it.

I can't say with certainty that the mushrooms caused the migraine, but I can't rule it out either. Have any of you heard of anything like this happening? I know it seems unlikely, since psilocybin is known to be effective at treating migraines. But I am afraid to take psilocybin again until I can rule it out as a cause.

Thank you.

I can't answer any of your questions for certain only provide some knowledge you might want to consider for further personal research. I do know that Psilocin/Psilocybin mushrooms will cause a reduction of blood flow to the hypothalamus area in your brain or at least that's what studies I have seen have indicated in the distant past.

Perhaps it has something to do with that? Maybe your migraine was triggered by that effect. That's actually part of the reason they think it helps with cluster migraines (the decreased blood flow to hypothalamus's area). Personally I would double check your well hydrated to make sure you have a good blood volume. Often I find that alone helps with my migraines and sometime electrolytes + meditating in dark room. But I have never had one persist for the length you describe.

I did read that consuming Lionsmane mushrooms (Hericium Erinaceus), maybe has an opposite effect of Psilocybin mushrooms in regards to blood flow to areas of your brain. Nothing I saw was related to Migraines but it might be something to try when you get another persistent migraine. Its a relatively safe edible mushroom and there are supplements readily available a lot of places. Be safe man and try to run anything by a DOC if your super worried, better be safe than sorry always.

Cheers,
Juicy

Thanks Juicy. I have heard of lion's mane and have taken it before. The hydration suggestion is interesting. The few other times that I have had migraines I was also dehydrated, but none of those other times lasted more than a few hours.

When I took 6g I had a splitting headache without aura that started a few hours after and lasted for ~24 hour. Never had a headache that severe or long before. At the time I ate them dry. Now I prefer making tea.

I do not get migraines, my mother did, I know my cousin did.
I do not know if grief or stress causes them.
I do not know if they have a cyclic nature, as in once every 3 or 4 months.

but I think if they do have anything like a cyclic nature you can trip in between the cycles.

However, if your migraines are normally associated with change in stress or grief (i.e. emotional triggers) then psychedelics might be no good for you as the transition into being stoned and coming down is somewhat akin to emotional experiencing.

Have migraines ever sent you to the emergency room before or was this the first time? Reading your account, am I correct that the emergency room happened some time after the trip, or was it immediately after?

That's pretty serious - macrodosing may not be for you. Or if it is, it may be only after a lot of time to get used to it.

It could be that low doses actually have an opposite effect and prevent/treat migraines, but it would be quite risky to test. Maybe worthwhile, though. I would suggest your next dose be barely active, in the under 1g range, and you examine and monitor migraines carefully for a week after.

That is not surprising because it's in the same class of drugs as psilocybin - both tryptamines, serotonin analogs.

For me psilocybin is an incredibly effective migraine treatment, but low doses work the best for this, not very active doses.

I have found that shrooms actually help my migraines.

I would recommend drinking water, and as long as you aren't allergic or taking a steroid, take 4 advil to kill it.

I am great at getting headaches and migraines have been a part of my entire life.
Often times, I will get a migraine headache when my body is 110% exhausted. This can be through low mental energy, extreme muscle fatigue, poor nutrition & hydration, sleep deprivation, over-exposure to fluorescent/LED lights, and many more.

With that said, the day after a powerful trip, I will usually have some sort of migraine or tension headache, sometimes an extremely intense one. I attribute this to the insane amount of energy I expended during the trip, but also lack of nutrition (and typically water) for the duration of the experience.
The day after, I believe my body has now entered an extreme state of rest and is looking to regenerate. Once I drink tons of water (make sure electrolytes are in there, or eat some legit fruit) and a hearty meal of protein and complex carbs, the headache subsides quite a bit and will fade away within a few hours (a bit of ganja helps too if you like that). I highly recommend this strategy and see if it helps!

For many days after the trip & headache, however, my daily headaches are diminished 10 fold and if I do get one, the intensity is extremely low. If not a full psilocybin trip, a .3 microdose every 3 days also seems to do the trick to minimize migraines and tension headaches for me.

I hope you can figure this situation out, as headaches are never any fun! Good luck & happy new year!

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Some questions were asked, which I'll answer here.

I have had migraines before, but only rarely. Probably five total throughout my life (I'm in my late 40s). They were always triggered by physical exhaustion and dehydration, only lasted for a few hours, and were preceded by an aura (the typical migraine prodrome).

This time was much different. On the day following the trip I felt normal. It was the second day after that I developed the aura, which lasted about an hour, followed by the headache, intense pressure in my forehead, and cognitive symptoms. About three days into the migraine it hadn't gotten better, so I started to get worried and went to the emergency room. The doctor prescribed sumatriptan, which made it worse.

I have taken higher doses of mushrooms in the past with no issues. The mushrooms that I took prior to the migraine were from the same batch that I have taken mushrooms from before.

It's possible that the migraine and the trip are not connected. I have had some some stressful life events recently that may have been the cause.

Thanks again. I hope you are all well.

Sorry to hear it had lasted so long, hope things have been better lately!

Despite having gone to so many doctors in the past, I have never really heard too much detail of the aura (slightly rings a bell). I suppose I can remember some visual distortions as I feel the beast approaching after having researched it just now. Will have to pay attention to this in the future, thanks!

I can attest that whenever I have a migraine that lasts for several days or even what seems like weeks - it has always been directly linked to stress. The stress has been a toxic relationship at one point, a stressful job at another point. Often, I can even give myself a migraine quick if I fall into the rabbit hole of anxiety and stress loops.
I hope you can put your mind at ease, as I believe this would help greatly! Fortunately, I believe shroomskis are able to aid in taking a look at the mind for diagnosis and healing!

Hope you have a magnificent 2022!

Not everyone experiences an aura before a migraine. If you do experience one, it almost always means it is a migraine, as opposed to some other kind of headache. It appears as a flickering, zigzag pattern in the field of vision. For me, it almost always appears in my peripheral vision, towards the top-right. It starts as a small blind spot, and grows to a flickering zigzag pattern that spans about a 10° arc.

Cruithne,

I was reading some research papers last night and it reminded me of this thread, sorry to bump it. But it seemed like relevant information to add to the discussion.

"Psilocybin dose-dependently causes delayed, transient headaches in healthy volunteers" - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3345296/

From what I was reading the headaches can be caused by one or more of the following 5 things:

  • 1) - Induction of delayed headache through NO release. (Nitric Oxide)
  • 2) - Facilitation of glutamate release in the cortex, with headache generation in those susceptible.
  • 3) - Suppression of dorsal raphe nucleus inhibitory activity on the LC with α2 adrenoreceptor-linked vasoconstriction during the period of acute drug effects, followed by vasodilatation and headache.
  • 4) - Direct triggering of migraine attack through 5-HT2B agonism in migraine-susceptible research subjects.
  • 5) - Induction of Iκβ-α, inhibiting NFκβ, TNF-α, and iNOS, with subsequent ā€œreboundā€ headache; or a combination of the above.

I would guess that maybe if your taking a larger dose the extra Nitric Oxide could be the catalyst of the headaches. If you were taking smaller doses I would guess that one of the other 4 reasons could be responsible.

If the headaches stemmed from the NO, might be worth checking out some dietary changes for dealing with nitrates https://nutrigardens.com/blogs/blog/foods-that-deplete-nitric-oxide

Cheers,
Juicy
