public education
    #2766255 - 06/05/04 01:25 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

for those who believe that the state should provide public educational services at the expense of the taxpayer, i have a question...

to what extent should education be provided?

how much education should a person be able to recieve at others' expense? in which disciplines should education be provided? to what degree of expertise should a person be able to train for free and in what fields?

While home school is a viable alternative for some kids, most rely on public education. Since I think at least basic education (and the socialization it brings) is pretty important I'd at least like it well funded and done properly. Unfortunately that little wish is in no way related to how it actually works right now.

As I said in another thread somewhere before I noted this post, we pay over $10k in property tax that almost all goes to schools. Private schools are cheaper then that, and better. Why should I have to support the equiv of 3-4 students per year??? Im not rich, but I guess the money I do have isnt mine, its really not mine, I work for the people and im not even elected.

Until the state recognizes them as an adult, independent from their parents.

alright... if you think that a certain amount of education should be provided, than what is that amount?

saying that a person should be educated until they're 18 (most states let you recieve free public education until you're 21) doesn't answer that question at all. it only sets an age at which a person is no longer eligible for 'free' education. it doesn't say anything about what they should be taught during the course of that education.

public education presumably provides some kind of... education. it's not just free daycare until a person turns 18.

do you want me to draw a curriculum plan or what? That's like asking exactly 'how much' and what kind of military and police protection we should have.

come on now. if you think that there should be public education, you must think that a person should be taught certain things. what are those things?

reading and writing?
arithmetic?
algebra?
US history?
world history?
chemistry?
physics?
calculus?
geography?
logic?
computer programming?
nuclear engineering?
art history?
neuroscience?

what education should be provided?

So you DO want a curriculum plan

Why don't you answer this first: if you think the state should provide protection, what equipment should they provide?

That's just too specific a question.  If someone else wants to write it out go ahead.  that's like trying to write out the state budget--it's lengthy and based on compromises after consulting members in the field.

stop dodging the question. what should be taught in public schools?

personally, (and i know this may surprise you) i do not have a problem with government subsidies for training in literacy and arithmetic for those of any age who need it. i would have a problem with funding for astrology classes, even for those under the age of 18.

that would be a part of the answer... but no, that's not all i'm looking for.

the way i see it, and i think even proponents of tax funded education will agree, is that there is a limit as to what can be taught in a public school.

there is no reason why a person should be able to persue 5 or 6 doctorates in unrelated fields at the taxpayer's expense.

a single person shouldn't be allowed to train as an auto mechanic, airplane pilot, nurse, HVAC specialist, neurosurgeon, theologian, sculptor, gynecologist, and interpreter on russian, arabic, swahili, japanese, gaelic, and esperanto at the taxpayer's expense just because they want to.

a person should not expect to be provided with free education about the history of the star trek tv series or sports trivia.

The first 6 years of school could probably be taught in just 2 years. The rest is just about keeping kids out of trouble while their parents are at work.

totally agree. i knew a swedish girl this last year who was unnecessarily doing her second degree basically because it was so heavily tax payer funded that it hardly cost her a thing. in fact, i waver back and forth between whether universities should be funded by the state at all.

just out of curiosity, how do you fit that in with the libertarian ideology of the purpose of the state?
