Too much Fuzzy Feet?
    #27662236 - 02/17/22 07:23 AM (1 year, 11 months ago)

Hi,

I am brand new to mushroom growing and things are moving along nicely.  I have a monotub that is starting to come up and it has slight fuzzy feet on them.  Is this normal fuzzy feet or too much fuzz?  I am fanning 2-3 times a day and I have 1 inch holes on my sides with micropore tape.  I am worried that my FAE isn't working as well as I hoped.

I welcome your thoughts.

Thanks

That looks totally fine and you won't have to fan either, people are growing cubes in unmodified shoeboxes without fanning and such no problem. Fuzzy feet can also be genetic.

Are you following one of the monotub teks? Which one?
Where are the holes located?

A little fuzz is fine. Fanning is unnecessary and can dry out the substrate.

Did the substrate colonize fully? In the photo it looks uneven.

Thank you very much.  Good to know that it is fine.

In this tub the substrate only colonized about 80% but seemed to stall.  It was about 10 days and I switched to fruiting conditions.  Being so new I am struggling to decipher between when to be patient and when something is amiss.

My monotub has 3 holes on the long side and 2 on the short side.  They are both about 4 inches above the substrate.

I have two main fears driving my decision making.  I have read that not enough FAE is really bad so I have been fanning regularly.  Your posts make it seem that I am overly concerned about that.  The other is that I live in a dry climate (avg 20% humidity) and I am worried about drying out the substrate so I am misting twice a day.

Thanks for your help

I would put a couple holes just above the substrate and stuff them with polyfil.  This will allow the CO2 to "pour" out of the tub.
It may be a bit difficult to do when there is substrate present, but if you are willing to try, go for it.
The grow is looking good, though.

I suggest you review the monotub teks. No mods, minor mods, set-and-forget. It will save you some worry and answer many questions before they even occur to you.

Patience is the most important skill in this hobby.  Sometimes substrate colonization takes a while. You’ve not reported contamination and none is obvious in the photo. More time probably would have helped ensure even colonization and fuller pinning.

Learn from the experience. On the bright side your spawn worked and mushrooms are growing. Not everyone gets that far on their first attempt.

Many members have great success in much drier climates with no or minimal adaptations. It’s the beauty of tub tek, a self contained microclimate. Humidity where I am is typically 15-20% and my tubs are unmodified or modded with just a few 1/4” holes. Right before harvest I may prop the lid for extra air, if the fruits haven’t already pushed it up. Dozens if not hundreds of similar stories in the tek threads.

I’m not seeing uncolonized sub.. I’m assuming this is MS?  Sub strains grow differently from each other.. some grow thicker myc, faster, etc which can give the uneven look.  Myc will also grow thicker the closer it is to spawn inoculation point.. if you have spawn closer to the surface, you’ll have thicker looking myc at those spots.

I wish the fuzzy feet worry/over correction thing would go away.  Unless it completely consuming your fruits, it’s not something that even be thought about.

Tub looks good.

Awesome!  Thank you all so much, helping to minimize my concerns.  Sounds like my biggest concern should be a lack of patience .

I will review the official monotub teks.  Not sure if I am using one as I read a lot about monotubs, watched lots of videos, and then decided to do what seemed to be most common and most successful.

Thanks again, this is all super helpful.
