Computer Question
    #2766119 - 06/05/04 02:29 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Any tech wizards out there know how I can keep other people from turning off my computer or putting it on stand by.. I have windows XP home and I put a screen saver with a password to log back on but it still lets people turn it off/restart it/or put it on standby. If you know any way to disable this then tell me.

Dude...you have what's called the "Bagel Virus".

Easily treatable.

Sorry that's all the info I can give you.

Open up your Control Panel. Then you'll want to open Administrative Tools (if it isn't showing and you have a blue background on the control panel, click "change to classic view").

From there you want "Local Security Policy". Once in that program, hit the + beside "Local Policies" and then click on the "Security Options" folder.

Scroll down and find the setting:
"Shutdown: allow system to be shut down without log on"

Change that to Disabled, and reboot the computer.

That may or may not help :smirk:

Whichever, I have a friend who works for AOL. She told me about it. She called it "The Bagel Virus" but it could have other names.

Those damn AOL "techies" are all a bunch of retards. All they ever do is tell their customers to call the PC manufacturer for support...as if we are supposed to support AOL's software!

Best way to solve the problem: every time it happens, smack 'em over the head with a frying pan. It'll fix itself within a few days.

Download adaware and an anti virus program. Keep them up to date, and use any internet browser but internet explorer and you're good. I think I've only ever gotten 1 virus, in the 8+ years I've been using the net.

of course they can always just unplug/power down the box. Unless it's a server box with a lock (which a child and a hairpin could defeat anyway).
