No, they certainly dont reproduce asexually but it is an odd form of sexual reproduction. The main difference being that there is no "male" or "female". Taz, if a commercial mushroom grower decides to utilize a hybrid, they have no interest in having the offspring sporulate with hybridized spores. They use the strain that results from mating two compatible spores and then store the resulting strain. It isn't done with just two spores either. It's done by mating anywhere from 20 to 100 PAIRS of spores, each done as separate cultures. Once somatogamy has taken place in each of the plates (only noticeable by microscope) they take the resulting dikaryotic mycelium from the plates and combine them. Once this is done, a variant of hybrid strains are produced. The hybrid is then sectored and the most fruitable, aggressive strain is selected and propagated further on agar. This strain is stored in a strain bank, and recultured for as long as desired. Be reminded that this is how I was taught, there are a few other methods that I've heard of mycologists utilizing. This isn't the "standard" in creating hybrids, it's the only way in my opinion that wins merit. So, do hybrids play a part in home culture? No, not really.

I was under the impression that when the spores "germinated" into mycelium, they would send out a strand to look for another with the SAME genetic structure. wouldn't you have to force two strains together? For the PF method, injecting two strains into the same cake might just make 2 strains gorw on 2 sides. maybe even fight!! MYCELIUM WAR!!!
Perception is reality. Perception is also a function of the mind, which is intangible. so maybe I AM a mushroom! never do business with Jamisoninc.com, He rips you off and then calls you a liar.

both you and kast are right of course. My thing with hybrids is this, once you grow the shroom then take a print from it it will resort back to it's strain if that makes sense. what I was saying is that if someone bought a so called hybrid and really enjoyed what they got, they would want to continue reproducing it and not have to keep going back and buying more syringes.
