Psilocybin and Openness Research study * 5
    #27652550 - 02/09/22 06:24 PM (4 months, 14 days ago)

Hello all! Thank you for taking the time to read this.  My name is Christine Lowe.  I am a doctoral student at John F. Kennedy School of Psychology at National University.  I am conducting a study of the relationship between levels of past psilocybin use and a participant’s openness to new experiences.  I am seeking participants who are (a) over the age of 18, (b) are able to read at last at a 5th-grade level, (c) have used psilocybin in the past for self-improvement or in conjunction with formal therapy, and (d) have past or current issues that might benefit from formal therapy.  If this description fits you, then I would like to invite you to participate in my research.
Participation includes a demographic questionnaire (which takes about 5) and one personality inventory that will be completed twice, each of which takes about 15-20 minutes. The personality inventory will be filled out first as you recall what you were like before your psilocybin use and second, as the way you believe your personality changed, if at all, after your psilocybin use.  Once you have finished, your email will be placed in a drawing for a 50-dollar Amazon gift card. If you are interested in participating, click on the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Z8C7XXB . If you have any questions about this study, please contact me at (415) 501-0826 or c.lowe0913@student.nu.edu. If you have any concerns about this study, please feel free to contact the NU/JFKU IRB at (858) 612-8384 or via email at irb@nu.edu. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to share this link with others!

Done

Good luck with your study.

For anyone thinking about doing the survey-- it didn't take nearly as long as the estimated times listed above.

Is it though? The marketplace surely doesn't seem like the best place for conducting a research survey.

Are you open to the experience of eating a handful of mushrooms?  That’s where you’ll likely find the answers you seek on said topic.

The point to meditating is to feel the same when you are meditation as when you aren't. To be balanced inside and out. Difficult to do when being aware of breath and sensation. However, not impossible. Feeling ok about yourself at all times seems to be a great difficult skill to master. The concept so simple a snail could understand it. To practice it some of the greatest Albert Einstein type minds couldn't master it.

It's like the trick to human problems is to be even more human. Not less human but as human as possible, only understanding human nature.

Understanding subtleties is hard. What is subtle? Subtle is powerful. Atoms are subtle. Atoms make up everything we are. Understanding subtleties is one of the hardest parts of life.

Thank you for posting this. As I was taking the survey, I wondered how much of an impact the pandemic had on skewing the data. That is, if mental health has taken a dive in the past few years, those who have used psychedelics for self improvement might show decline in their mental health before and after psychedelics according to the survey data. For instance, Bob's mental health is a 5 in 2017 when he starts taking psychedelics. In 2019 Bob has progressed to an 8 and is loving life. In 2022, Bob continues to use psychedelics but doesn't do well being isolated from others and his mental health is back down to a 5. Therefore, Bob shows no improvement on the survey.

Just a thought.

A high resolution brain scan of people tripping on various doses would be more educational.

I think both methods of study have their place. A scan can't really tell you how one feels and a survey can't tell you what's going on physically in one's brain. Those SPECT scans are cool though. For psychologists, I could see both being beneficial.

Also, I would include scans both before, during, and after a trip. Plus a week and month and 2 month follow-up scans.

Plus what does 5 even mean?  There’s no standard 5.  It’s like the hospital’s pain scale.  What is a 5 for me could be a 2 or an 8 for someone else and there’s no standard for the whole scale.  It’s just like, your opinion man.  Good luck hitting a bullseye.

Absolutely. It's all subjective. The scale is only relative to the individual and I was just using that as an example. A crude and ill defined one apparently. Don't think for a minute that I actually expect my opinion to be valid especially on the internet.

You are correct it is subjective, but I am trying to get each person's view on themselves. That is why the "before" and "after." Both from that person's perspective!

Oh, I totally get that. I think what you're doing is great and hope your research goes well. I'm curious if/where these results will be published. I don't want to speak for anyone but I'm pretty sure a lot of the people on this forum would be interested.

The results will be published in my dissertation once I defend it. I do not know how long that will take, honestly. I hope to add to the literature about psilocybin throughout my career.

One thing that might be worth adding...
I took the survey and my answers are pretty much predrugs and post drugs... and that's many years on speed (haven't done that shit in a long while). It might benefit you to ask whether the people are strictly talking about mushrooms or if mushroom and other drug use.

I used to take them to get fukd up,  these days they have kept me off speed...

I stopped taking the survey on the pre drug questions, because predrugs was like 14 years old and now I'm 33, I'm sure years played a bigger part in these questions than drugs

True, many factors affect one's personality; I am just looking at one thing specifically. However, that is why there are the demographic questions, to acknowledge that many other things go into one's personality. It also takes a certain type of person to even partake in the study itself! So thank you for even considering taking the study!

Considering OP registered today and only made a single post... today. Nah, not if you haven't checked all the boards today.

Above the post it says "This announcement has been vetted and approved by the Shroomery staff."

That's fairly common on here lately. The people who run the site are open to it when they get contacted for research.

It's the mods / admins who pin it on every thread.

We have 3 highly active admins, global stickies are approved by a majority among them.

And of course, thought goes into that to keep the community safe.

Good luck with your research program. I applaud such work and hope the enthusiasm for psilocybin turns out to have a firm basis in reality.

Able to read “at last” at a 5th grade level.  Funniest typo ever! Last year I found 5 pounds of Cyans (around 200grams dried) I gave away half and I consumed the other half during a three month period.  My personality has done a 180.  I am no more Mr. Nice Guy.  I’m confronting past trauma head-on.  Unfortunately, I find myself crying like a newly crowned prom queen with PMS too often. I took too much.  I was an incredibly shy and closed-off person.  I was emotionally dead.  Now I find it easy to talk about myself and who I truly am with others. I experience emotion now.  Much more to the story.

Thanks for doing some solid research into our little (and yet incredibly expansive) psychedelic world. I'll jump over and throw in my answers. I'm glad to see more research is going into our little fungi friends

Is openness the only trait being researched? (that you know of, of course).

I'm asking because the truly big one that a lot of people begin using psilocybin for is trait Neuroticism (which is VERY difficult to alter).
