Bigfoots 2022 veggie patch growlog - greenthumbs welcome! * 5
    #27651519 - 02/08/22 09:15 PM (1 year, 11 months ago)

I'm finally getting off my ass and starting a veggie garden. I want to do it every year but I'm so damn busy I either never get around to doing it or I forget about it until May when it's way too late to start seeds. Not this year!

This thread is going to serve as a growlog of sorts just to document my process and results. If there are any other gardeners on here I encourage you to join in!

2/3/22 I started 72 pepper seeds (5 seeds each of 13 varieties..ok 6 of one and 5 of the other 12) ranging from 0 scoville to 2,000,000+ scoville  I'm not sure if I'm early, late or right on time for starting these seeds but I'm zone 5a so early is better than late.

Pepper lineup:

two jalapeno varieties (Jalamundo from NuMex and 'Early Jalapeno')
7 pot bubblegum (2mil+ shu superhot)
Yellow Fever (~1.5mil shu superhot) - the title 7 pot comes from the legend that 1 pepper is enough to spice up 7 pots of chili
Trinidad Red Scotch Bonnet (~500k shu)
Cayenne long thing (~30-50k shu)
Antep Aci Dolma (very sweet flavor similar to red bell peppers with about 10k shu. I'm very excited for this pepper!)
Piri-Piri (~100k shu - excellent for fermented hotsauces)
Red GhostxScorpion (~1mil shu)
Korean Hot Chili (traditional pepper used for kimchi ~50k shu)
Hawaiian Sweet Hot (excellent for cooking fresh, unknown heat level)
Sweet Apple Kambe (sweet pepper 0shu)
Zia Pueblo (unknkown SHU, traditionally used to dry and use as seasoning)

2/8/22 - I have sprouts on NuMex Jalapeno, Early Jalapeno, Korean Hot, Sweet Apple Kambe, Trinidad Red Scotch Bonnet, Piri Piri, Antep Aci Dolma in 4 days! As anticipated the superhots are lagging behind but I've heard 21+ days isn't uncommon for them to push their cotyledons out of the soil so it's a waiting game :jeopardy music:

I'm still waiting on 10-12 tomato varieties to be delivered. I'll get those added when they show up and get put in the seed tray. I don't really like tomatoes very much but I've been wanting to start making my own bloody mary mix and I've always wanted to grow some of the more peculiar tomatoes so I'm finally doin' something about it!

In a few weeks I'm going to have a shit load of plants on my hands but I know plenty of people who would be thrilled to get some transplant-ready veggies, and I might try and sell a few just to recoup the cost of seeds

I'm contemplating onions and carrots but I'm not sure how much room I'll have. I'd really like to do some horseradish to! My yard doesn't have enough sun to support a garden so I'm having to work with whatever area my dad is nice enough to loan me out of his garden. He already has garlic and some huge asparagus plants that push massive yields every year so I'll be busy making a bunch of pickled asparagus this spring as well.

I'm excited for all the fresh salsa I'll be eating all summer long but what I'm really excited for is all the fermented hot sauce and bloody mary mix I'll be making! I put hot sauce on everything and I can't find a commercially available bloody mix that tastes how I want it to. They're always either too peppery, never actually spicy, not garlicky enough, too smoky, not smoky enough or whatever it is.

damn, fresh bloody mary mix sounds delicious! I’m never really satisfied with them either, always just some plain as tomato juice and tabasco (vinegar mostly) and i remember why i don’t order those buahaha

Wish i had space for a garden again, might try some indoor hydro if i ever get out of the hotel and into apartment this year.

well best of luck on the seedlings and all, ill be lurking around

Tomato seeds arrived this morning so I've got 6 of each variety soaking in some black tea for a little chemical scarification to assist with germination. They'll get planted in a 72 cell seed tray tomorrow first thing in the morning and I'll be in business!

This time of year in zone 5 is always so cold, drab and dreary so it's really nice having some greenery growing. It's gotten me really excited to mow my lawn lol

looks bomb…I’m a fan of the cherry size. I had forget the name but it had the stripes like the green zebra but they were red with dark stripes, man they were so juicy…

We would just toss a pinch of seeds in some small containers then transplant into the garden when they were a decent size lol I like your technique tho

I’m looking into this non circulating hydro setup, looks pretty awesome, little baskets of coir recessed in the lid of tubs, maybe like a 50 or 60 quart size

I meant to order a packet of the seeds you're talking about but I must have forgotten to add it to my cart. Oh well, considering I don't really even like tomatoes I think the 48 seeds I just put in a seed tray will be more than enough for me

I tend to apply the 'belt and suspenders' approach to everything I do, which is why I soaked my seeds. Simple often works just as well but that ain't how my brain is wired unfortunately lol

Your hydro setup sounds cool! I'll actually be taking a hydroponics class next semester at my University because they changed how it's classified so it now satisfies one of my requirements

Pepper seeds are getting quite leggy, assuming they even sprout. I'm going to start some more of the same varieties today to see if I can correct some of the mistakes that I believe led me to the stretched out seedlings.

You'll have a lot of fun with the scotch bonnets.
I used them for a few batches of my fermented hot sauce and the taste was incredible. They are sweet and zesty and pack a good punch heat wise but won't have you going insane for half an hour like a reaper or a bhut jolokia.

Hey thanks for tuning in! I love scotch bonnets because of how versatile they are! A friend of mine traded me a few grocery sacks last season for a chocolate bar. Almost all of them were fermented for hot sauce but I used a dozen or so for some jerk chicken on the grill and a batch of spicy chili while the wife was out of town. She thinks ketchup is spicy but loves chili so I have to be careful when I cook for her.

I'm growing a few that I'm a little nervous to eat though - like the bhut jolokia x trinidad scorpion cross and the 7 pot bubblegum which is another Trinidad Scorpion hybrid..

Most of my peppers this year are destined for hot sauce but I'm going to be making fresh salsas weekly, smoking, drying and grinding a lot of them for seasoning powder, pickling, daring drunk neighbors into eating one and what not.

Sounds like a lot of goodies, wish I'd have enough room for a new pepper grow. I did one once and had to toss everything because the soil was contaminated with trich...
But I can order pounds of fresh peppers from NL for incredibly cheap so I usually do this, great quality too and they put about 20% more in case some peppers get smashed in transport.

And to be fair, anything over 1 million Scoville is a torture. Love me some habaneros or Habanero/Scorpioin mix in a 80/20 ratio but straight Scorpion/ScropionxGhost or above and I'm definitely out.

that's going to be an awesome garden! I've always wanted to grow lettuce/spinach/chard but always forget about it and need to learn how to mange it - from what I know temps and 'bolting' can cause some bad flavored produce. According to USDA I'm still in the window for sowing these seeds though so I might give if a go

A quick little update: I started transplanting my peppers today. Most of which went well and I think they will all survive:

these are my super leggy jalapenos that I buried pretty deep hoping they sprout adventitious roots but I don't have high hopes:

I got impatient and tried transplanting some tomatoes. The roots aren't developed enough so I ripped the root balls of a few in half so these guys will have to wait another week or two:

We've got 4 unexpected days of 60s and 70s coming up before we go back to the freeze so I'm taking this opportunity to get my seedlings outside for about 30 minutes each day. I'm still about 8 weeks out from planting them in the ground so I'm not doing a full on hardening off, just introducing them to wind and natural sunlight.

The sooner I can leave these outside all day the better, I made a critical miscalculation and I'm not going to have nearly enough room to manage these plants under the lights I have lol. I'd rather move them outside and inside daily than have to trash a bunch of plants because I didn't plan properly. Live and learn

8 weeks?
May 1 in the ground seems mighty early for zone 5a.
You might want to go to containers in case of frost / deep freeze

I am 5a, and shooting for mid June (for peppers). But your mileage may vary.

edit - for peppers. Greens obviously go out earlier.

:threadmonitor:
I usually grow tomatoes and jalapenos with some leafy greens and onions mixed in
Every year I say I'm doing less but rarely do

Carrots are a no-go unless you have really sandy soil.  Radishes are real easy and fast growers also
Herbs that you cook with are fun to do too.  You can dry them and cook for a couple years off of one plant unless you use it all the time
I got a super good recipe for canning jalapenos if you want it and I'm gonna guess you've got almost everything needed for that already.  I used to sell them for $10/pint and give em away for holidays

8 weeks may be a touch early but 10 should be good. We're typically done with our late season Winter BS in April so I'm using May 1st as a target but will adjust accordingly. My entire life is based off of weather reports and maintaining grass so I at least know not to rush and expect the unexpected lol.

I just noticed your tag says 'Western, NY' so there's the difference. I'm in Midwestern Corn Country so our winters are a little different than yours  every season zone 6b gets closer and closer...

Fuck yeah man I'd love a good recipe! I'm just starting to read about canning to hopefully preserve some of my harvests (other than fermenting for hot sauce), especially pressure canning since I want to make a ton of salsa. I've seen a few recipes for 'cowboy candy' that sound good but it's not quite a pickled jalapeno

Here ya go.  I thought this up almost 20 years ago and haven't changed it in a long time

Also, a lot of canning recipes call for alum to keep the product crisp.  I don't use it because it's basically aluminum which has been linked to Alzheimer's.  It makes the peppers pretty soft but people don't seem to mind.  My wife was eating them with popcorn last night and I had some on Spanish scrambled eggs yesterday for breakfast and nachos last night

Just noticed these directions are for a hot water bath canner, not a pressure cooker.  You can do 15 min at 15 psi with a PC instead and they turn out the same.  The olive oil will turn a lil gelatinous once you keep them in the fridge but that's ok, it just looks weird

4 cups vinegar
1 cup olive oil
1 cup water
6 teaspoons pickling salt
1/2 teaspoon dried Thyme
3 fresh garlic cloves

Wash and slice jalapenos
Combine vinegar, olive oil, water, and pickling salt
Begin heating water in canner to a boil
Sterilize approximately 6 pint jars
Bring solution to a boil
Place thyme, sliced garlic cloves, and jalapenos into the jars
Pour solution into jars leaving about a ½ inch of room at the top
Place lids and rings on jars
Process in canner for 15 minutes after canner begins to boil again
Remove jars and let sit overnight to cool
Remove rings and dry tops of the jars to prevent rust

I love your pepper selection and your setup. Looks good. I had a pepper garden many times but now its a growing substrate graveyard along with scattered places around the property. I have never been much good at growing some of the things I like such as garlic, brussels sprouts, artichokes although climate does factor in some and indoor plants wouldn't fit in this cramped little trailer. Best of luck on your plants. Maybe we could trade something for a few of the dried super hots I have never tried before when they are ready.

Assuming I don't manage to kill my plants between now and harvest I'll be happy to share my crop with you! I have WAY more plants than I'm going to know what to do with lol. Whatever peppers I don't use to ferment for hot sauce will be either used for fresh salsas or bloody marry mixes but I'm sure the large majority are either going to be dried or smoked AND dried. When the time comes I'll be happy to share some peppers with you! I'd offer some bottles of hot sauce to you but they won't be ready until 2023 season  maybe a bottle of bloody mix if it's half decent

Sounds cool. Had the same issue with 6 of those non stop habanero bushes and a grew tabasco peppers...until the cold killed it I have never seen so many peppers. It leaned back facing into the sun in a fan shape and hundreds and hundreds of little peppers. Wasn't expecting it but those little fuckers are stupid hot! Was expecting more flavor than heat and it lit my ass up. I started putting like a half in a batch of taco meat and it was like dumping a shit ton of cayenne in there. Jeez....wtf?!? I just realized what time it is and I am still up. Well time for a little sleep I guess.

Nice to see you on that fermented chili sauce train as well, it's just soo much better.

I planted some tomatoes for my 5yr old, as well as some flowers and a butternut plant, unfortunately I don't have as much space as I used to to grow veg.
Previously I grew a plantation of sweet basil and made kgs of pesto, I also grew fields of Persian white poppies.

Buying a 4m tunnel soon for a few things as well, need to grow veg again.

I love fermented sauce, but honestly I don't discriminate lol. Hot sauce gets doused on everything in my house. I might actually have some basil seeds so I may as well give them a try - fresh pesto on pasta sounds wonderful right now. I could easily fit a small tunnel or greenhouse in my yard I just don't have enough sun on my property. Fortunately my dad is nice enough to loan me a good sized plot in his yard!

Any of you other greenthumbs have an opinion about why my Piri Piri plants are yellowing and curling?

I've done quite a bit of reading about it and none of the common causes seem like the culprit for me. The first picture almost looks like a mosaic disease but I can't tell. This is the only pepper variety I have doing this which is strange to me. I'll take it by the county extension tomorrow and see what they have to say about it

What are you feeding the piri piri and what soil is it in currently?
Looks a bit mg deficient possibly, do an Epsom salt rinse and give it a bump in nitrogen from a good foliar feed.

Last year I got the leaf curl like that.
I read that it was from too much light.
The leaf curls up to protect itself.

All my peppers and tomatoes are in a soil blend called Ocean Forest. Once I transplanted them into this blend I gave them all a half strength feeding of this liquid fertilizer which has is a 2-.5-2 analysis with an additional .5% of available water soluble Mg. After that half strength feeding I switched to plain water because I was told the soil blend has enough nutrients to feed the plant for a month or more.

I read the same thing but it didn't seem to make sense in my situation, especially since these were the only two plants doing this and all my plants are being grown in identical conditions.

I ended up taking the plants to my local hydroponics shop and they basically determined it was some sort of virus, most likely tobacco or mosaic. I trashed one plant and cut the potentially infected growth off of the other hoping it would put up new healthy growth and act like nothing happened. We'll see what comes of it

Well it now appears that I've got the beginnings of an aphid infestation on my hands. The undersides of my cayenne plants new growth leaves are covered with what looks like 1,000s of clear eggs.

Are these little fuckers coming from the potting soil? I'll stop back by the hydroponic store today or tomorrow to get a natural pesticide and hope for the best

I have dealt with an infestation before that ended up killing the plants. I planted some ferns where my 2 old dogs are buried and when they started to look sick I checked and there were tiny red eggs all over the underside of all the leaves. I tried everything I could but they ended up dying off. My big issue since I am not running a garden currently is slugs going after my cacti. Those bastards love to go after the newly sprouted and soft young paddles.

Good luck and I hope you are able to kill those things off. Have you tried the dawn and water in a spray bottle? I used that in my garden with good success.

Yeah these little bastards have me nervous. I'm going to hose off all the plants in my sink later tonight to try and at least dislodge most of whatever these are and I was planning to run to the hydroponic store tomorrow to pick up something similar to neem oil. Hope it works

Best of luck on killing off those pests. There are friggin parasites everywhere! Never heard of neem oil. If I get another garden going and have issues I will look into it. Well I am off to get cleaned up for another SAB session.

Still no word yet on what those weird bumps are on my cayenne plants  a lot of my peppers new growth is yellowing, one of my scotch bonnet plants is getting some brown spots on one of its leaves and some of my tomato plants are randomly dropping entire leaves so I'm a little bit stumped. I'm going to give them a feeding today or tomorrow and hope that solves the yellowing.

This is all a learning process for me so I can't get mad about it but this is all quite frustrating, especially considering all the horticulture classes I've taken in recent years lol.

I also apparently have forgotten how to count and read a calendar - I have about 6 weeks left before these go in the ground but I've been saying I have 6 weeks left for a month  my tomatoes are going to outgrow their little space pretty quickly so I'm going to have to get creative if I'm going to keep those plants. In all honesty though I probably even have time to start new tomato seeds if I need to lol

Spring is almost here so pretty soon all my plants will start spending the day outside and I'll bring them in at night so space won't be as big of an issue in a couple weeks.

I wish I could put you in touch with my parents. They have been gardening for 30+ years and my dad used to own a garden center. He really knows his shit when it comes to plants. I have had hir or miss success with gardening myself so I hope you get it all sorted out. If you have pix along with species and description of the problem I may be able to ask him. Also need to know what region of country you are in for reference. Just figured maybe a fresh perspective on it might help. PM me if you would like me to ask.

I blew up that pic of leaf damage on a laptop as much as possible and it looks like spots of the leaf have been eaten.  Regardless of what they are, most small insects can be kept away by spraying a mix of water and oils such as lavender, peppermint, lemon etc

Neem oil works good to but you have to be careful not to use too much in the mix because the right amount suffocates the bugs by coating their exoskeletons which they breath thru, but too much will clog the plants stomatas which is what they breathe thru and the plants suffer a slow and agonizing death over the course of a few weeks.  I killed off a whole room full of pot plants that way once...it was a sad sad month watching them

Thanks for all the help and suggestions! I just took all my plants outside to get some natural sun on them and I gave them a feeding. The peppers look more green in actual sunlight so I think that's just a trick my lights were playing on me, but some of them are showing what looks like Bacterial Leaf Spot. I'll post a picture at some point.

I've been meaning to stop by the hydroponic store to get either neem oil or something similar that they recommend but I haven't done that yet. I'll have to wait until Monday to go but that is definitely something I need to be proactive about.

That sucks you lost all your plants, Stallion - I'll be devastated if all these tomatoes and peppers go tits up before I ever even get to make my first salsa lol.

When my pepper plants had issues like leaf and pepper spot rot or odd spots adding a little calcium nitrate seemed to help. I was told it doesn't take very much. Idk if that is the issue but you seem to know a bit more about it than me. I usually buy the ones from home cheapo or wherever that are already growing. I have had very poor luck germinating from seeds either from packs or dried and saved the year before. I do hope your garden succeeds..frustrating after all that set up, soil prep, etc and it craps halfway through sucks.

Well none of the issues I was griping about with my peppers seem to be getting any worse or really causing any damage so I think it was just a bunch of noob panic

Most of my peppers are becoming root bound though: they seemed to have quit growing vertically, they're starting to set flower buds and the roots are coiling around their 'pot' so I'm going to repot 1 of each pepper variety into a larger container to see if I can't make them happier for the next 3 or 4 weeks before they go in the ground.

I started my tomatoes WAY too damn early. They're over a foot tall, becoming root bound and I'm running out of room to keep them lol. I might actually be better off starting new tomato seeds at this point. I'm even considering just taking propagative cuttings from them in an effort to save space. Might be an interesting experiment

My toms and peppers always got too big for the solo cups before putting them in the ground.  I don't think it'll hurt anything to wait on transplanting them.  Transplants always add some stress to the plants so you might want to just do it once.  They'll take off once outside anyway

Also, my peppers always seemed to make an early set of buds too.  They may make a few small peppers then starting growing in size a lot after they get outside and start back to making blooms again after a while.  Usually half of the year's peppers come in the last harvest in the fall

ah the perennial problem... holding off on sowing seeds
you just never know when's going to be good to get outside, maybe a cold frame could be a good halfway house?
I'd bloody love to be able to sow as many seeds as you but my garden's tiny, so don't have enough room, it'll just be 3 tomatoes and 6 peppers for me this year (along with about 300 other flowers/ veggies to sell to my clients)
and a couple of auto's of course

what's the weather like with you? we had a warm spot (got excited, sowed a lot) then a bloody cold snap with frosts!!
not good
:stanhopefacepalm:

Fuck yes! I think I'm going to invest in a grow tent for next season....I may have even convinced my dad to let me put a greenhouse in his back yard lol

My plants are coming along  fairly well. They badly need to get repotted though. They're extremely root bound, dry out every day and are getting stressed out in their tiny containers. I gave them about 4 hours of direct sunlight two days in a row and a few of my peppers are showing sun scald so I need to acclimate them a lot more gradually.

The weather keeps acting up so I'm also strongly considering taking propagative cuttings from my tomatoes so I don't have to manage such huge plants indoors for another few weeks (they're like 2 feet tall lol).

Next year I will have to either start them like a month later or give them a bigger pot. Live and learn

Green house would be awesome!

For the dry plants why not stick em in a container with a little water on the bottom and they drink it up when they feel like…? you have a ton goin tho huh?

Why isn’t there a LAGV(egatables)?

I’m working out of state and my coworkers don’t care about my food crops lol

Because I don't think there are enough people on here who care about food crops either  if I remember in time for next year I'll get that started! Could be a lot of fun

Prizes for heaviest tomato, first ripe superhot pepper, longest carrot, etc then at the end of the season we all exchange seeds

hydropnoic strawberries? is there any advantage to that?
apart from no slugs, and no birds, and plenty of sun and nutes... are they the best strawbs ever?

I haven't tried hydroponic strawberries yet, but I watched a few videos by this guy,
who has done very well with strawberries and lettuce.
And his system seems pretty nice and efficient.

Very nice Tao! I've been meaning to make an update and say that most of my plants are already in the compost  Most of them got a nasty virus, then I got frustrated and insanely busy so a bunch of the others just got neglected but the ones that didn't get fully neglected look...ok

I do think that, aside from neglecting them, my seeds came from a low quality vendor which caused the virus.

I still have a dozen plants just not the quantity I wanted and most of the varieties I was really looking forward to are deal lol.

The weather is looking up though and I've got the garden tilled so it won't be long until these are finally in the ground.

Sorry about your loss Bigfoot. Gardening is a lot harder than watching the gardening TV shows on Sunday and expecting the same results as you well know.
I made the mistake of mentioning the varieties of tomato seeds I have and someone said they would take a hundred plants. I know they grow a lot and know how to care for the plants but a hundred plants in my basement is a lot. It’s a lot less than the 1600 plants a friend does every spring. She’s my seed source.
By the by, it’s 4C and snowing here today. Magnolias and daffodils are blooming.
I never put a tomato in the ground before the beginning of June. Burned too often.
You have to love spring.

Hell yea tao, looking prime!

Sorry big foot that’s rough!

I’m still jealous of you both having all that space to grow. I have a tiny apt and a 4x4 grow space lol

My strawberries are flowering but not fruiting, yall think i need to try manually pollinate?

On the left is red cabbage, middle are my peppers that took almost 2 weeks to germinate, and my roma tomatoes on the right. might move that to the yard at work since its already falling over and replace with some Tiny Tim’s that should germ soon.

Hi san pedro guy. I’d hand pollinate. This is my pollination kit. My wife wonders where the brushes go. I put them back eventually. Tweezers are for bigger flowers, pull a pistil and transfer.
Glad you grow in your space. I try to get friends to grow a little something on their balconies or decks. Nice to be able to pick your own.

Sorry about your loss Bigfoot. Gardening is a lot harder than watching the gardening TV shows on Sunday and expecting the same results as you well know.

That's no joke! Even if I don't manage to get ANY of my surviving peppers to fruit I still learned a lot more than I lost so that's a win. I'm mostly disappointed that my biggest losses were due to a low quality seed source. It would sting a lot less though if I screwed something up instead of just being dealt a losing hand. Sometimes life just ain't fair though.

Hopefully next year I'll have even a small hydroponics tent (no plumbing) and a cold frame. I underestimated how much time and space these little guys would take up so any sort of automation will be a major help and I'll have to get creative to get more floorspace...and get a new seed source.

All is fair in love and gardening lol

Regardless of my setbacks I hope everyone else has a bountiful season!

very nice! I'm going to finally get my tomatoes and peppers in the ground Sunday evening and post an update with pictures. Tomorrow night is supposed to get down to 40F otherwise I would have planted them today. I'm sure the plants would handle 40 just fine but I don't want to take the risk if I don't need to

Tomatoes are doing well. 12 varieties I think. Had to start more because Covid has turned people into gardeners. Now I have to teach them to save seeds.
I had someone tell me that tomatoes aren’t suppose to flower in pots because it wasn’t good for them. I told them I’ll have ripe tomatoes by July because I started them in February.
Bees already found the blossoms.
I think I’ll put them in the ground the beginning of June.

Looking good guys! I'm super behind on planting. Got some stuff in but it's been a swarmy year for the bees and they've been keeping me busy. At least I got my butternut's and a bunch of greens and peppers and stuff going already. Got some yamato cukes in the ground yesterday.

You guys into mints? There are so many. I scored another wild one from the woods today. It's skunky and pepperminty with serrated edges and a little fuzz. I am excited to see what color and shape/growth pattern the flowers come out. Maybe a dozen mints in the yard here.

When life gives you feral bees.....

Stoked to have found this thread.:congrats:

40 tomatoes in at my buddies yesterday. It’s a good start. The chickens get the boot when we leave.
Are the wild mints as aggressive at spreading as the garden center mints? I only keep one and I keep it in a large pot.
I love bees.

wow, amazing!
did you scoop them up in that box?
do you have a hive for them?

I'd bloody love to have bees but I'm in a rented house and I have about 8 other gardens within 10m of mine...
too much hassle ya know?

I cut the branch out of the tree and put it in that box. Then I dumped them into a hive box. The queen did an impressively fast mating flight a few days later and now has three full size combs built full of thousands of eggs. That is a very healthy swarm. I'll probably get honey from them this year.

Nice looking plants. What’s  the one with the wide potato like leaves? When did you start them?
I started 60 plants and got requests for more so ended up at 110. Kept 10 for the yard.
Tomatoes dehydrate beautifully or freeze them intact. The skin slide off when they thaw out.

Hot as shit here too, but no rain.

Got a cherry tomato plant, one jalapeño plant, three bell pepper plants, and two small medium spicy pepper plants. My buddy gifted them to me. A little late in the season, but I am going to make it work. The middle bucket is some outdoor mush, white teacher variety.

Coolest spring in decades in Ontario. Now they just posted a heat warning for the next 2 days. It’s 66F right now, tomorrow afternoon is suppose to be 92. Tomatoes will be happy.
I’ll be in the shade with a beer.

Yeah, my dad and a buddy of mine who both live further outside of the city had that problem until they both installed electric fences. They also both have good sized gardens. I don't know if it is the small size of my set-up, or if the city deer don't know what vegetables are anymore, but they don't mess with my veggies. This is the fourth year I have done this here.

best I've found for curly kale is chop it it pretty fine, take out big chunks of stem, mix it with oil, salt pepper and a bit of sugar. lay it thin on a baking tray and whack it in the oven on medium for 15 - 20 mins. watch out for burning on the edges, mix it up a couple of times.
crispy crunchy lushness! :awedance:

Awesome San Pedro.  This year I put a few peppers in pots for the first time.
It's amazing how much faster they are growing than the same ones in the ground.

I don't want to be that guy who disputes everything.
I just want to say I was watching one of those vegan propaganda movies and they say we are definately built for vegetables.
Our small canines have basically disappeared, and our intestines are very long which makes them much better at digesting vegetables than meat.

20'x20

I was vegan for 2 years, now I try to eat mostly veggies and grains with a small amount of meat.  Love to make fermented salsa, pesto, pickles, marinara and baby food.

That's the most shade it gets and only for an hour or so.  Over 30 genovese basil total, 8 sunflowers, marigolds around one border, peas around one border, 3 beefsteak tomatoes, 8 cucumbers, sweet peppers, a row of beets, 2 Shiso, sweet peppers, 8 Swiss chard, 4 kale, 4 kolarabi, 3 watermelon, hot peppers, cherry tomatoes, sweet peppers, another row of basil in the shade.  So far the peas prefer the shaded area.  This fall I'll be sowing winter wheat.  Next year I'm going to add cow poo, peat moss, lime and shape the mounds into concentric circles.

Back garden is a mix of 6 heirloom tomato and peppers, lots of peas and 3 different varieties of cucumbers.  Also have a few pumpkins.  Hoping that the watermelons and pumpkins are far enough away from each other that they don't cross pollinate.

My honey bees survived zone 4 winter and then high tailed it out of town when our temps went over 100°F.  Last year when it got that hot they would just fly into a tree in the afternoon and come back the next morning.  Got quite a bit of honey after they left, ~24 frames.  Will probably buy another nuc next April.

Was probably What The Health? on NF.

Peppers do grow much faster in pots.

Dang im super jealous namaste…your garden looks awesome!
I’m not a huge veggie eater but I would love an outdoor garden someday soon.

Not tryin to argue about our digestive tract either but the only thing Ill add is that, ive taken lots of shits where theres plenty of undigested plant material, Ive never looked back and said “hey, there’s a piece of pork chop!”

yeah I'd bloody love a hot square in full sunshine, I get so much shade in my garden! nice one Namaste!

now if we're talking undigested, I once had colonic irrigation, and the waste matter went through a clear tube with a light behind it, so the chap administering it could see what was going on. at one point he tapped me and said "hey check this out. that's probably about 10 years old beef" as a grey sludge slowly crawled down the tube
:shockingsurprise:
seems that everyone has different bowels though, and some people love a bit of high meat for their guts. I'm slowly heading veggie/ vegan, seems to suit my mood better
:highfive:

Well true everyone is a little different…i usually only eat dinner so I need some food packed with fat and nutrients…dont think I could do that with a big salad and mixed nuts

Peppers really coming in now, I forget which is which but I planted jalapeño, bells, and banana

and you can see my chard plant…been eating random leaves as they come in, I heard purple plants have anthocyanins, which are supposed to be healthy or something

Funny that you mention anthocyanins.
A few of my crops were specifically chosen for high anthocyanins

"Bulls Blood beets" very, deep red.
"Dazzling blue kale" deep blue coloring.
and red swiss chard.

Fuck yes you guys are killing it! I've been gone for a couple months but my garden is starting to produce! I just harvested my first dozen jalapenos a couple days ago - not much flavor but a surprising amount of heat for a jalapeno  my cayenne plant is laden with fruits. My 7 pot bubble gum, yellow fever and ghost-scorpion are all starting to fruit as well! A lot of my tomato varieties are full of green fruits to so it won't be long until I can start making fresh salsa, hot sauce and bloody mary mix

@Nichrome - that bee swarm is awesome! I drove through a swarm a month ago and probably killed close to 100 bees with my truck :frown: that made bigfoot sad...

Yep, I'm back! I had some stuff to deal with but I started missing this place so I had to come back. Plus I'm down to my last 7 ounces of PE so I gotta get the lab rockin' again lol.

I usually use fresh jalapenos in soups/chili, enchiladas or make some sauces/salsa. I prefer pickled over fresh jalapenos though. The only problem is that I don't think my one plant is going to produce enough for me to pickle any this year.

Let me know how the sciencey peppers turn out!

Does anyone else enjoy eating Purslane?
You know that weed you find creeping through the cracks in the sidewalk anywhere in the world...

It is also a weed in my garden, and I just let it go and eat it up.
I realized last year it is edible and very nutritious. I love it.
Just in case you have been killing it. Give it a try.

I’m watering every day, not the lawn! You must be out there twice a day if you don’t have soaker hoses or emitters.
I love summer in the early morning and in the evening. From 10 until 2 I find something to do inside. Wifey wonders why I’m up before 6.
We need rain here. Lawns are brown and dormant. Crops are hurting. Farmers are having to irrigate, diesel isn’t cheap and the ponds are drying up like it’s August.

Calorie wise your way ahead.
Pretty nice haul this morning of basil shiso, a couple beets, and an early walla walla.  Tops aren’t quite falling yet, but they look awesome, corn is staring to throw out some silk, tomatoes are just starting to get some color, sweet potatoes are finally starting to put some growth out and delicata is invading everywhere!

I just pulled another dozen cherry tomatoes off the vine today along with my first 3 ripe cayenne peppers. I'll pick up some chicken and spinach tomorrow and make my wifes favorite dish - creamy Tuscan chicken  a few of my other tomato varieties are getting really close to harvest, I have about another dozen jalapenos nearly ready to pick and all of my other pepper plants are heavy with green pods. I keep forgetting to take pictures but I will try and post some this coming week

One of my neighbors is getting ready to go in for (what sounds like) a fairly serious surgery and it sounds like she'll be down for the majority of next season. Unless she makes a faster recovery than expected (which I obviously hope for) I'm going to offer a trade: a full season of fertilizer and weekly mows in exchange for me to use her 25'x25' garden that is only growing weeds at the moment. My crews already do a lot of work in my neighborhood so it will cost me practically nothing, she struggles to get around so she would be appreciative and I'm tired of driving 10 miles round trip to tend to my garden. We'll see how things go!

Any of you guys eating the radish pods???

I love radish pods. They are crunchy and spicy a lot like the root but one good plant will give you a whole bucket full... They are great pickled too.

Historically radishes were originally grown for pod production and breeding for tasty roots came later on...

My cucumber is pale as the north

Calcium or phosphate deficiency? I transplanted to new fancy potting soil. Hopefully that works.

Home grown veggies!

Phosphorous is my guess. Also, what's that dark purply thing in your first picture above what appears to be a halved squash/cucumber?

More NP and K. Lack of calcium would look like dead brown spots.

Third flush on the cilantro. That variety is a winner. That's a yellow thai plant and some butternut and black beans under the trellis.

Just a lot of stuff to eat and there an azzie bed in the middle of all that.  No idea if the azzie will fruit but I won’t hesitate to plant it in my garden beds again.

Well, with how well I maintained this thread it shouldn't come as any bit of a surprise that all of my tomatoes went to shit this season lmao. I got 2 batches of salsa and like 3 BLTs. Much shame, such bad

BUT! My peppers have been bangin'! This was todays harvest:

Left: Hawaiian sweet-hot with some 7pot bubblegums. Right: Korean Hot and Yellow fever.

I love the sweet-hots!! Sweet/fruity flavor about on par with a habanero, maybe a little less. I'll have these every year

Left: Ghost x Scorpion, right: Jalapenos

This is about my 3rd harvest of this size so far this season and it looks like I'll get at least one more, maybe two. All together, probably not 'thread worthy' but I've had a good time and have learned a LOT. Next years garden will be SO much better

Tomatoes are coming on strong now. Big Orange, Striped Roma, Red Stripe, Snow White, Black Cherry and Black Krim.
In a race with the birds and chipmunks.

Fuckin' hell those are beautiful! I'll have to shop around for those seeds for next season

As I've already said my tomatoes went to absolute shit due to my poor engineering/management skills, but my peppers are still bangin! Here's my most recent update:

1.5lbs of ghost x scorpion purred down to make .25 quarts of fermenting mash lol. That's going to be one sinister hot sauce

I left too much headspace in the jar so it didn't form a CO2 barrier fast enough and the kahm yeast/lactobacillus forms these nasty looking pellicles in response to oxygen. Totally safe to eat just hard to look at lol. Gonna let this bad boy ferment for several months while I figure out what the hell to do with this jar of fire

How long does that devil sauce ferment? I like adding hot sauces to mayonnaise to cut the heat a bit and spread the flavours. Made some nice BLT’s with those tomatoes with piri piri sauce and mayo.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have some jars with stuff on top.

I found fermenting pepper chunks in a brine with a weight on top much more forgiving.
Mash ferment doesn't taste any better to me.

I think at minimum the peppers should ferment for about 3 weeks but that's a little rushed. These are probably going to ferment for about 6 months, or as long as I can wait - the longer the better. good idea to make the mayo/hotsauce sauce, bet those BLTs were dank!

Interesting you can't tell a difference between mash/brine. I've read that brine is better and mash is better so I think it's mostly preference  The only time I did a brine ferment I didn't have enough headspace so my brine kept purging out the airlock lol. I still have quite a lot of peppers so I'll try another brine and see if I can notice a difference
