I have started scouting in preparation for rain and cold.
Have only come across a handful of (non - active) fungi.
Scouted an area of urban Auckland, one urban bush, one urban reserve, and one golf course.

I've been out of the loop for a while...
So, we have multiple species fruiting in nurseries now?

You are wasting your time. You wont find shit in Auckland in March...

Just Psilocybe angulospora and Psilocybe tasmaniana for the most part.
You could find the odd Gymnopilus purpuratus or Gymnopilus luteofolius, perhaps Panaeolous cinctulus if you are fortunate.

I'm working with mycoangulo to challenge this. All the mushrooms care about is the microclimate being right. They don't care about the season.
It seems all the mushrooms need is rain and temps below about 12C for a few nights.

As soon as there is a decent rain, I will mount a proper hunt.

If the area is dank enough you don't even need rain. I know one spot that fruits without significant recent rain. It just stays damp for so long.

Does such an area require only a cool enough temperature?

The temperature link hasn't been proven so it would be really interesting to see if it would fruit at higher temps.

If I recall correctly, the first Auckland psilocybe posted in the 2021 NZ official thread was a Weraroa..
I wonder which species will take the honor this season..

First active from Auckland this year in this thread was Gym purp.
Haven't seen weraroa since around Christmas.

What conditions were you finding weraroa in during summer? What was the temp like leading up to fruiting?

I too would like to know these details.
There has been much chatter on the underground Vietnamese Galerina circuit regarding Weraroa's endurance throughout the NZ year.. but nothing definitive..

I just put some Ps. weraroa and Ps. subsectioides on to grain so hopefully I'll see fruit this season 😄

Several days of rain and temperatures 23-27 deg C in the day and about 16-18 at night.
I second the 'the what circuit?'

The two competitors are seated opposite each other around a small table in a crowded, sweaty, cigarette smoke filled room. The light from the lone light bulb is dirty and weak.
Silence envelops the room as the officiator brings in a large platter filled with a heap of brown mushrooms and places it between the two seated men.
Then, a cacophony of bet-making..
Alternating turns, the two gladiators begin picking then consuming mushrooms..
... And so it goes until one of the two bravos begins to display signs of Galerina poisoning.
Each half hour, of course, the officiator replaces the platter with a new one. It is understood by all that each successive platter contains more Galerina's than the last.
With every new platter, therefore, the chance that one of the two gentlemen picks and consumes a Galerina, increases.
I gained a little celebrity after a while.
They called me, Ngựa điên - Crazy Horse.
