First subs find of the season for me, only a small handful at a new patch. Hopefully will start popping off with all this rain!

Found a spot at lunch today that has a bit more than a WAH. Hopefully they have time to mature.

Record breaking (and back breaking) haul today.
Too many to pick. Had to leave so many behind. Didn't even make it to my second favourite spot. Ah well, there's always tomorrow (might need a second dehydrator)

thinking I might compare spores under the microscope between the wavy caps and the smooth (non undulating) caps. The stipe of the wavy caps are thicker and have a different consistency, ie. they snap more readily than the smooth cap ones, which have more fibrous and stringy strength to them. They are clearly different strains in my opinion. Will update when/if I follow through

Thanks! I'll go through this thread now and see how I go. I'm thinking I might try my luck this weekend and see what I can find and post photos when I've gotten back. I'll probably have a bunch more question as I go. I was only hesitant about specific questions because I know some threads and chats are really strict on what can and can't be asked and the last thing I want is to get banned/booted for asking a question out of ignorance because I misunderstood a rule or something like that.

Hey Draugr,
It's always nice to see new members excited for mushroom hunting.
Please keep in mind this isn't an identification thread. Only post photos you have already identified.
Happy to hunting TM

Hey TM,
I will probably start a new thread of what I find for identification help. If what I understand is true then since I'm new to this and, never had mushrooms before, identification is even more important for me. I was told that New Zealand has some of the most verities of mushrooms that look very close to if not the exact same. Is that true? I'm not going to lie it does make me rather nervous going into this alone with only a basic knowledge of what they may look like but I understand that because of the nature of the kinds of mushrooms I'm looking for it's the only way I'm going to get them (I am rather new to any substance use in general as I wasn't very adventurous in my teens). Thank you for the reminder though!
Kind regards Draugr

so i had a bit of a day.. grabbed a nice pocket full at the first spot..

Then it got a bit crazy at the second spot. I had picked 50g dry on monday from this spot... but it keeps growing, and expanding. I had to leave piles of them around to collect after.

so at the end i went around and collected up all the goods
and when i picked up the bag.....
ya the arse fell out... had to run find some plastic bags... while i was there i was already messaging a friend to see if he had an extra dehydrator. he met me at the next spot where i didn't even bother picking any but a few nice photos to be had.

visited my taz spot and found a new little group, so now have 4 small spots in one bigger area where these are popping up.

what a mish sorting all that out... luckily the dehydrator i borrowed is the same as the one i killed so have 5 trays in my new one and 10 trays on the old sunbeam cranking away..... sorry about photo overload but it was my best day ever by a long shot.

Wow quite the haul Sam.
I’m not having anywhere near as much luck as you are. Checked my best spot from last year tonight and it was pretty empty. Only a couple of subs.
Found a couple of subs at my seco spot as well but I’m yet to come across anything decent.
Really hope I can get some time to have a good hunt around this season.

Hey guys. This is only my second season in the mushroom scene so I’m still a newbie. Im an Auckland local but I’m at a bit of a loss. Last year I found so many mushrooms, kg’s of them. It was amazing. This year however I am yet to find anything. I don’t understand, my local patch produced so many last year and this year absolutely nothing so far. It’s covered in mycelium and it’s a prefect environment for them (has it possibly been sprayed? What would I even look for to know if it has?). It’s not just that spot though, I’ve been searching high and low, crawling around… still nothing. I’ve searched north, south and west Auckland, again nothing though. I missed the boat last year a bit and didn’t start looking till late June so was eager to get ahead this season, so maybe I’m just being impatient? Maybe I’m just really awful at foraging lol. I’m just eager to learn more about these fascinating lil things. I love seeing others finds and it makes me excited but I can’t help but feel disappointed after returning home from foraging empty handed. Just wanting any tips and advice you guys may have
Also let me know if this post is against any of the rules and I can take it down

it's stark out there, I swear. If I hadn't ranged so far from my usual local spots, I'd be lucky to have much at all. Substrates don't last ongoing without something to feed them. And there's more competition since lock down, I reckon

Holy shit nice big hauls everyone, I've found a few small clusters amongst the suburban council gardens but I'd expect more this time of year.
Am I being paranoid or do the council workers destroy patches ? A couple of patches that looked like they were gonna kick off big time and I've come back to 2x2m square of chips all ripped apart.
The birds normally just dig up a little patch, this seems like purposeful destruction.

It's not just the council workers. Some hunters walk off with the patch

thats what happens when kids or noobs hunt. Same thing has happened to a decent patch this year already.
People must have no brains or something, how is destroying a patch by kicking the woodchips around going to help in any way shape or form....? Do they not understand a patch can push up to 7+ flushes easily if they keep it in good condition.. I get that they dont want other people to find the patches etc, but that type of karma through the mushroom gods is a no no

I bloody knew it ! My work mate has been giving me shit all week, "They don't know what Subs look like, stop being paranoid" he said. I tried to tell him they don't need to know exactly what they look like, they're probably just smashing up every patch with brown topped mushrooms.
Could be other hunters I suppose but I'd prefer to think other hunters wouldn't do that shit.
Now I'm going to have to spread more around to make up for the destruction.

Nice hauls everyone. Not that I doubt you Dkeppel, but you should watch a blackbird fuck up a wood chip garden. Fooled me my first season. But yeah sometimes people are just dumb. Keep stembutts and start a patch at home or somewhere noone will find it.

Hello shroom friends. Been a slow start for me down south in chch. My suburb is a bit dryer than average so nothing here until this week. I did find some in swampy chch in a garden by a cycleway. They were still quite small but shrooms is shrooms. Best not to pick a cycleway during the morning or after school rush is what I discovered.
Not it's rained so I checked my local spots. One was exploding with thousands of pins. Blue mush everywhere so I already missed a flush. I picked all the damaged\rotting\large pins and left hundreds of others. I think the lack of moisture has stopped them getting big but it's wet now so hopefully they grow up big and brave. It was in this spot that I found my first shroom three years ago. No gods, no masters, only mushrooms.

Half on the miniature mushroom haul.
