It's been one hell of a dry autumn this year in Nelson it's rained about twice in the past 3 months, I've been searching and searching for about the past month, on my hands & knees digging through leaves and grass etc, found lots of different Coprinopsis varieties popping up, some wood chip cherries etc.
Today on my way to work I stopped for a vape by a patch of council garden down by a stream and saw this wee mushroom growing beside some native grass.

Still haven’t found anything decent in Auckland yet but haven’t had much time to look around. Found a couple of subs at a nearby park though.

Hey starting over. I'm in Auckland for the weekend, it's frickin cold and due to rain all next week so surely that should kick things off. Saw so many pins coming through at 2 spots on Wednesday, just hopeful that Monday they're mostly still there.

In mighty Waikato near Raglan and had a crawl around today. Didn't see anything but will keep my eyes peeled. It has been really dry, but had high hopes with the recent morning frosts.

So I found my first ever subs today! It’s very dry still but stoked to find some in the wild in Greymouth. The few biggest ones I am attempting to get spore prints off, but really want to attempt to propagate some stem butts off the smaller ones I found. Is the normal thing just to chuck them in between soaked cardboard and hope the myc takes off?

It's extremely dry in Nelson too, feels like we're skipping autumn this year and going straight into winter.
I'd imagine it will work well as it seems to for others, I'd think you would want to do it ASAP before it drys out but maybe moisture brings it back to life ?
I've managed to grow ... Something out of this hand full of 9 month old bark with a dried out old Gold top on top given to me by a work mate.
I just washed the cardboard with boiling water 3 times, allowing it to soak until cool between washes, put a layer of cardboard down in a container ridges up, spread the bark on the cardboard and put another piece of cardboard on top with the ridges touching the bark, then I hooked up a thermostat to a heat mat and set it to 18-20 and put that container with the probe under it inside of a plant propagation thing.... I check it everyday to allow some air exchange.

not an expert but ill share my method which seems to work okay for me. first i find a cardboard box, not too big and i tip my stem butts in there. then i cover them and the rest of the box with some scrunched up toilet paper which i mist with water so its damp but not wet.
after a few days it will hopefully look like this
With the few days you have either find some good size wood chip, ideally a year or two old and boil it for a bit, i did 2hrs to be safe. alternatively find a mahoe tree, these will usually have a few dead branches still on them, these can be broken into little bits and hopefully there is no competing fungus already. Put them in with the butts and hopefully they will start eating it. Cardboard does work but usually the mac will stall or have issues jumping back onto wood afterward.

Not the best shot of the wood chip growth but as you can tell the wood chip is old already, this helps. they seem pretty happy with the mahoe twigs though. Once its on wood its up to you how long you keep it as a pet before setting it free. Be aware of mold, especially cobweb mold, if it appears move it outside. good luck. if you are wanting to do a larger amount of wood chip fermenting is a good method and simply involves submerging the wood chip in water for at least 2 weeks - i do a month. it needs to be fully under water not floating on top. It will stink when its done so do it outside. I just use buckets with bricks to weigh the chip down.

Man those Psilocybe makarorae look awesome !
Sam11 what bark are you using ? I need to get some soaking, do you know if the Bunnings $8 a bag landscaping bark alright ?
Does anyone do agar to grain to wood chips or straight from agar to wood chips ? I'm looking for an excuse to play with agar to be honest.

Those makarorae are a fricken excellent addition to the thread. I don't use bark at all, only wood. I think if you buy new chip you will have a hard time getting the mycelium to take to it. I think they prefer chip to be a few years old.

What do you do to your makarorae woodchips when you move them outdoors?
Just dump them on the ground? Cover / mix with soil? I'm trying to figure out how to grow them indoors

i apologise if this is a very n00b question but i've been wondering how many days after rain is best for hunting shrooms. i have been heading to likely spots at night but just come across non-actives and what looks to be dug up spots
