Does the water leak out of the lid? If they are modified with some type of filter your water should be absorbed by your grain during the PC process. I personally have only used modified plastic and modded ball lids.
When I lay my jars sideways I just kind of toss the grain in the jar so it fills the jar halfway horizontally. I do this before PCing and they don't come out leaky or anything. I know plastic lids don't always work with adhesive filters so I do all my plastic lids with silicone. I have moved more towards using the original jar lids with the adhesive filters slightly unscrewed.
Water inevitably pools up on top but the grain is clean once I secure the lid back on top gently.
I also I am in the gypsum makes no difference for cubes camp so that is something else that lacks in my prep. Water + grain + heat + time = Good grain IMO

To QM:
Noted! Thank you and I appreciate the input.
I did have a batch come dry and it stalled me out for a bit. And I notice the jars I add LC or LI to plump up a bit more, so I might adjust my water content.
Cocaine:
Unmodded plastic lids is where I come across problems.
My modded metals worked perfectly because I could lay them on the side without the GE hole.
I agree gypsum is probably redundant but my jars get cluuuuumpy and I feel like it helps me out by 5%. Could try and have a go without it.

I cover each polyfill jar with my saved leftover aluminum foil squares from my last jar run and load them all into the canner. I dont let my [millet] jars sit in water.
Quote:
I use 2 1/3 because i dont want the bottom of the jar submerged in water for various reasons.
Why dont you want the jars sitting in water during PC? please school me!

I followed this tek for a set of pint jars, and the gypsum didn't distribute well even with swirling, so this time I put the dry millet into the pint jars WI h the gypsum, then put a regular/unmodded jar lid on and shook it vigorously to distribute the gypsum over the grains, then added the water and swirled a bit. Will report back if this worked better.
Thanks for the tek! Despite the issue above, my pan myc seems happy on it.

This indeed worked better than swirling the lump of gypsum powder into the water in the jars.

I have been doing really great with rye berries and corn, finally got a large order of millet and gave this a shot to save some time.
I did 10 jars, did a little less water in the jars, and they all turned into 50% mush. I did used a scale. This is my first time not doing a soak and boil as well as my first millet prep.
Any suggestions?
Also 1/3 water level seems kinda dangerous IMHO

You are using hull-on millet, yes? This is sold as chicken feed or for wild birds. It should look like this.
My jars have been working out great with a little less water and shaking the gypsum in the jar with the dry grain, then adding the water. Here's how mine look:

I like it!
I haven’t tried millet yet but i did try something similar to this with wbs and the bottom turned to complete mush lol
I was having a better time using the grain plus water then pc with oats. They wouldn’t burst and came out perfect.
I didn’t have it as dialed as you with the grams and everything tho, nice work!

Is this “dusty” look on the glass normal after a shake?

If not is it because the miller is too dry?
This is what it looked like before the shake

Seems a little wet and the millet you used might have been gritty and dirty. Did you sift it while dry ?
Wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't succeed tbh.
Might need to dial something in next batch
Hard to tell sure in pic but has that cooked rice look. Concerning tbh

I used the wrong type of millet. Mine was hulled not bird feed millet. So more like Couscous.

What happens to the water in the jars? It gets absorbed by the millet?

Thank you! I love this TEK and am going to try it today! 2 questions:
1. Have you tried halving the recipe in PINT jars? I only have 3 QUART jars at the moment...
2. You mentioned that feed store millet was not "coated" grain. I bought my millet from the bulk aisle in a grocery store and it is already pretty clean. I am not sure what you mean by "coated" and if that is a bad thing? Is food grade millet not good for spawning?

Hope ya’ll don’t mind if I dig this old thread up from the depths..
I just gave this a try using the “slightly fuller” approach and I think my grains might be a little over hydrated. I used the higher water content (250g millet, 135g water).
Does this look good to you? Or am I better off dumping these and trying again with a little less water? I’ll be dropping agar wedges into these - no LC. Not in a big rush - just want to get them right.
