Could be working, definitely worthwhile a try. Only concern would be the inoculation with spores and the possible drawbacks that come with it but feel free to pioneer and experiment. Haven't seen this been done yet. You can always go use LI or LC if direct spore inoculation is not good enough.

Follow-up to https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27667538#27667538

Shoebox on a shelf turned out much better than I thought it would. This was half a myco-quart of Pan cyan Wild Coast spawn to pasteurized coir, verm, and potting mix containing composted chicken litter. Cased with pasteurized jiffy.
Wet 87.4 Dry 4.6 for 5.3% dry matter. Right in line with Baba Yaga’s results.
With a little more practice I think I can get the harvest a bit better. Close to the end of the fruiting a few of the mush started having a black liquid/slime to the caps which I’m wondering was caused by the caps being so close to the lid created too humid of an environment. Next round I’ll likely try dubtubbing once the full pinset has formed. I tossed those mushrooms out not knowing what that was. Also, a couple clusters in the back which was up against a wall aborted. Not sure if it was being enclosed like that so I’ll make a few adjustments and see if I can solve that.
I’m also going to try using a quarter myco-quart per shoebox as Baba Yaga only uses a full one per tub. If I can get around the same per tub with a quarter that would be a nice haul of pans for one myco-quart.
Pretty buzzed upon writing this so I know I’ve forgotten some details. Will try to update as I remember them.

Yo, great job at shoeboxing those cyans, they are looking great.
The black slime could be just spores on wet caps. Would be nice to hear a few basic details like what you did for FAE.

Thanks Myc! I was pretty surprised on how well it turned out. Keep us posted on how yours turns out! Quote:

Thanks Baba Yaga! I’m hoping that’s just what it was but I didn’t see many spores on the stipes. I was able to get a couple of prints though which is nice.
I flipped the lid at spawn for passive FAE from the start. I found some shoeboxes that left a nice gap with the lid flipped so that plenty of air would move through it. Think I put a photo of it in the first post.
This was also a clone. Had a questionable jar on my first round of inoculations so I top fruited it with a ziplock over it. Cased with pasteurized jiffy. One pin popped up before it started going green so I grabbed it and took some clones. Had to have been the spawn as I used the same casing on a questionable cube jar that went on to give three flushes.
Thanks again for sharing your experience and showing this can be done. Can’t wait to have my first pan experience

I have some 27L tubs modded EZ dial style which I think will be perfect for these so watch this space in about a months time! Will provide intricate details, for science and the like!

Looking forward to this MycHunt.

Thanks Southerner. Fruited @ spawn and flipped lid with decent results. Sounds like it can't get any simpler than that.
+1 for fruiting Pans @ spawn.

What are you aiming for with your casing Ph and how are you testing this and ensuring a homogenus Ph across the mixture?
PS: very descriptive. thank you for this immensely detailed write up.

Hey, welcome on board!
I just use the recipe from Roger Rabbit. Mix all the ingredients dry and then bring to field capacity. Never bothered measuring pH. Some people here don't even bother adjusting the pH and that works as well. I got hydrated lime in abundance, if I would have to buy it just for the hobby then I would probably try without it as well.

Is the 1.5-2.5 inches the height before or after adding the 0.25-0.5 inch top layer?

That would be before the top layer goes on.
Thanks, have added this to OP.

Thanks. I'm going to get a hole saw and some extra tubs this weekend. I'm trying to calculate how much bulk sub to prepare for a 30L tub. 1:4 ratio suggests you use 2 quarts sifted compost, 2 quarts coir? Plus extra for the top layer?

I would prep like 3 quart of each which should be enough for the top layer as well. I am always running a few tubs at the same time with more spawn in the pipeline so I always prep heaps, mix by the hand full and use whats left over for the next run. Always eyeballing the ratio and sub depth so there is a good amount of variation, it doesn't have to be that accurate and never is in this household
Looking forward to see where this is going moopers

Thanks! This couldn't come at a more convenient time. I have a JCM already built I'm going to use, but I started three different species on agar (two old prints and one new), so I have more genetics than I have ability to fruit. I can run these babatubs at the same time as the JCM and see how they go. I plan to do cyans in the JCM and cambo and PHV in the babatubs. I have a fair amount of manure to go through, so will do manure/coir.
It will all get updated in my grow log (see signature) if you want to follow along. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as it progresses!

Finally have a jar colonised, gunna spawn tomorrow. I’m all out of 22L ez dials so I’m gunna do a 12L shoebox and pop out and get a similar sized tub with some more headspace, as close to the 22L samla as I can get and drill it out ez dial style.
I’ve got my manure compost I pasteurised 2 days ago so will be 3 days tomorrow. Mix 50/50 with some CV.
I’m gunna try 1/2qt spawn each box and go for a 1:4 ratio.
I’m also contemplating not running a casing when the time comes. I have some peat and some calcium hydroxide but may just see how I get on without it. Hopefully some pics to follow tomorrow!
