Hell of an awesome write up, Baba Yaga! Love the detail and alternate methods. Most of all I love the clues to look for from the mushrooms to let you know they would like some assistance. That’s very helpful for new growers who may not notice small signs like that with a new species (me). I’ll surely be giving this a go in the very near future. Thanks for experimenting like crazy and sharing your results with us. Excellent work.

Planning on fruiting a bunch of pancake style bottle subs in a mini mono
Will post the results here
My Martha fan crapped out and I can't be arsed to buy a new one.

I've got a taller 20qt and a smaller 16 qt I'd be happy with even one mushroom to collect spores from.

It's been said a bunch but holy shit, awesome write up and amazing work.  I don't now why I've dragged my feet on pans but I will be giving this a shot within a month or two.  Thank you for putting it all together.

Thanks guys, hope this will work for you. Just give it a go, you can always jump on the martha/humidified chambers if it doesn't produce satisfactory results.

BTW, I wrote this for myself as well and will read it to freshen up my memory when I get back from my grow hiatus in a few month.

I actually just germed some necd but i still plan to build a fruiting chamber.  But i wanted to reply to this thread and say what nice work the op is.  Great job with lots of interesting information, i think this is something even people who fruit in a martha can learn from.

Thanks for the updated Tek Baba Yaga!!
I will be using it in the upcoming months
By the way, do you think there's any hope for a similar Tek using slightly bigger-than-average shoeboxes? I could give that a shot as well in the near future.

IDK, never tried a shoebox. Give it a go please. I would run a few like cubes and case and do a few others with lots of FAE from the
start so the surface is just on the verge of drying out and mist when knots are starting to show up. I think that conditions during
colonization are more important than during fruiting. Had a tub where I provided full FAE right from the start by accident and ended up with
a nice flush without even casing. That was just one time though and I'm not growing at the moment so I can't repeat this for a while.

Are you growing out the spores from my giveaway or do you have other species as well?

It's gonna be the ones from your giveaway. I'll try them in a couple modded shoeboxes and report back. Unfortunately I'll have to wait until about April to germinate them because I'll be travelling during March and I read you sort of have to be on top of this species' mycellium so it does not lose momentum. Otherwise, I think I'd just store some plates/jars in the fridge for when I come back.

Sweet, seeing shoeboxes being used will be interesting.

Plates will be fine til April I suppose but it might be a bit long for jars. The longest I had Jars sitting around was two weeks and they've done well.

I have added an update below the OP that explains an accident that happened with some surprising results.
Posted this in the official thread before but it needs to be in here as well.

Baba Yaga said:
⭐AN ACCIDENT THAT TURNED OUT WELL⭐

FULL FAE AND NO CASING

So I am on a break from growing Pans till September 2022 but on my last run of tubs I accidentally blasted one of them with a lot of FAE.
It's a shame that I can't repeat this at the moment but feel free to give it a try. I have a feeling that this or a variation of it might be the way to go.

This is what happened:

I was playing around with the "Fruing @ Spawn" colonization as decribed above but I forgot to tape up the two holes at the top which I usually
completely close off cause these tubs have a vented lid and didn't notice for 5 days.

Like this:

The substrate partially dried out on the surface but a few knots were present. Gave it a fine misting and taped up the top holes as soon as I
realized my mistake. A lot more knots turned up the next day and some had morphed into pins, I did nothing but a fine mist or two every day
for the first three or four days to keep the fruits moist and once they were like 2" tall and thirsty I removed most of the MP tape on
the bottom holes and totally drenched the surface once a day.

I totally winged this one really. This is my fifth year now growing them in tubs so I go a lot by gut feeling and this is all I can tell
you. You just have to keep trying if it doesn't work out at first.

To recap this:

  • Substrate was sieved bagged compost/coir @ 50/50, overall sub-depth ~2", ~1.5" main sub + ~0.5" top layer.

    Compost/Coir substrate:

  • Hole setup when starting out was 4 bottoms holes with 2 layers of MP tape and completely open top holes with additional FAE through vented lid.

  • After five days top holes were completely taped over. Gave light mist once or twice a day depending on evap.

  • Once fruits were ~2" tall bottom holes were set up like this

And I drenched the surface once a day.

  • Harvest was after three more days.

And a few photos:

Damn Baba! This is the write-up I’ve been waiting for! I’ve grown pans via MacMerdins tek. I ended up with around 25 grams dried which was more than enough for myself and a few friends. For anyone who hasn’t tried them, they are a game changer IMO. The other night I germinated some spores from a print I took off that first grow. They may be destined for a mono in the near future! Great job. Can’t wait to see some updates.

Exciting tek! Dumb question, but what is the diameter of the holes in your tubs?
