gcc inline assembly on ia32
    #2763283 - 06/04/04 02:36 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Does anybody know how to force gcc to encode an immediate value rather than use a register value for inline assembly on ia32 architecture? I want to do something like:

Code:

volatile asm("xxx %1, %0" : "=r" (result) : "r" (value) : "cc", "memory");

where %0 is always an 8-bit immediate value. Every combination of the above that I have tried ends up with %0 being converted to a register value, which is illegal with the instruction I am using. My example is obviously flawed with the "r" in the input constraint.

Well, I have asked everywhere else I could think of and nobody seems to know the answer...

I'd start hammering lists and devs of distros that use such architechures.

I did a work around... from what I have been told by several people, there is no way to force GCC to use an immediate rather than a register value as I want. "... that is what the optimizer is for..." bleh...
