police posing as dealers

does this ever happen? my friend plans to go to a few concerts this summer and is extremely nervous that police may be selling drugs in order to bust the buyers. he has only heard of police working up the chain (catching a buyer, finding out who he bought from, arresting that guy, finding out who he bought from, and so on). do they ever work in reverse and go down the 'chain'?
the concerts are phish and wakarusa.......
thanks!

thats what landed one of my brothers in jail. only there was no concert, and there was no chain, the under just posed like a hustler then took in people that tried to buy from him. According to my brother (when we got him out) there were like 30 people taken in that night that way

well, you'd have to come up to them and ask for drugs for one.. they can't just come up and say "hey dude want some of this x???" as far as i know.
so just buy from people you already know and/or trust.

i didn't ask exactly how it went down (it was kind of a quite ride home from jail with him and his wife) but i know it was for weed, and due to the part of the country I'm from usually if you see an african american standing around certain places in the city its taken forgranted they are selling weed.
i think the way it works is that they can imply they are dealers but not say it outright. like on Reno 911 in the headshop

Never Trust Anyone!!!!! Only buy from friends that you have known for years. It ain't worth goin' to jail for weed. If you can't get weed, drink!!! or fuck till you fall asleep and worry about scoring tomorrow.

yeah, but its not weed my friend wants......hopefully at these concerts there will be lsd- something not found around here. as he knows no one at the concerts.......
anyway, at a HUGE (around 30,000 people) event, i think they would be more concerned about general safety (bomb, trampling, violent drunk people) and not about people smoking pot and using lsd...right?
i know it is an unlikely senerio at a 30,000 people concert that you happen to stumble across ONE under cover cop while hundreds of others are selling, but still, i want to know how likely it is......i REALLY dont want to get in any legal trouble.....
thanks guys for your responses

No one can give you a percent number that you will get busted. You have to be smart and rely on your intuition. Stay around the older heads and make friends, they tend to look out for the young ones.

I still say, NEVER TRUST ANYONE!!!!! When you go to a concert, bring your own stash. I was recently at a Dead show and the sweet smell of opium permiated the air. I really wanted to try (and buy) some. But you know what I said? NEVER TRUST ANYONE!!! I'd rather go straight then spend time in jail.

Well, if you live in a larger city, I'd say your chances are greater of getting busted. I've never heard of small-town cops trying something like this, at least not where I am. But as always, be wary!

Actually cops can just come up to and ask if you want to buy (insert drug here) as long as they don't talk you into buying it. If it was something that you would do normally then it's not entrapment.

Not true. You think a cop is going to tell some crackhead on the street who is strapped that he's a cop? Doubtful.

Cops never have to say they are a cop if you ask them, unless ofcourse they're arresting you or something, but then they'll tell ya anyway.

A cop can lie to you if you are under investigation to get you to incriminate yourself-persuasion?Entraptment?I think so,but here in the states if you ask a cop if he is a cop,he can tell you whatever he needs to get enough evidence for an arrest-then you WILL KNOW he is a cop!
If I jokeingly tell you." I am going to sell you an ounce of cocaine"-I can be charged with"conspiracy "even though I lied to you,and I will be charged if heard through a cop's ears! But if that same cop tells you"I am going to sell you an ounce of cocaine",he will not be charged,Investigative tactic's(ingnorant ass laws!)and if you offer to accept,in anyway(jokeing or otherwise)you will be charged with"conspiracy ",FREEDOM RINGS BABY!!!!!!!!

Entrapment is when a cop convinces you to do something you would normaly not do, if you are a regular pothead and the cop asks if you wanna buy, and you jump all over it, it is not entrapment, if you never have smoked pot and try and say no but the cop insists and you pay him and accept the drugs just to get rid of him it's a different story... dealers arent going to make you buy as we know there is a huge demand....
as for cops lieing to yo about cops, constantly, they will also make up laws to convince you you have done something and you 'better come clean'...
a couple guys were drinking one night and ended up in a farmers recently plowed field... they got a little crazy while they were there and made plenty of tracks... on their way back out they got stuck... having had been drinking and driving they tossed about a dozen cans out of the car several yards away... a cop pulled up behind them and asked the standard questions about license/registration/have you been drinking... it was a little dark but as the sun was about to rise the cop had enough visability to see the cans in the ditch... he asked if they belonged to the guys and they of course denied it...
The cop went to his car, ran the numbers and the guys came back clean with no priors for dui, no suspension and no warrants, the cop waited a couple of more minutes and the returned to the guys, again he asked if the cans had belonged to them, they again denied it... he then informed them that because of a new federal farm program that the farm was a participant in that the farm fell under federal jurisdiction, he was going to retrieve a few of the cans and have the forensics team lift some finger prints and that if they came back as theirs they would be subjected to fines up to $100,000 for each can and as long as 10 years in prison... quite a bit for a simple littering citation... the 2 guys quickly admitted to everything and were both charged with a DUI since neither was willing to admit to being the driver...
a true story about what you can believe from a cop... if you went through the DARE program you are well aware that cops are more than eager to lie to anyone...

As under-handed as that COP was... The two guys were drinking and driving. They shouldn't have been doing that, and shouldn't have ended up on someone else's property. From the sound of it, they were pretty trashed... They are fortunate they got stuck in the field, otherwise they may have killed an innocent driver out on the road.
COPS shouldn't lie, but people should be responsible for their actions.

They are trained to from day one, even before they start. If a cop is badgering you, (in the US), simply ask to speak with legal council before answering any questions.

I feel the same way about it... fortunately I was not involved in the incident, had it been me, I would have been more than happy to wait for the fingerprints to come back because if they arent willing to print 90% of the actual crime scenes like burglaries and auto thefts they damn sure will not do it for a beer can/DUI... but watching the cop walk into the field to retrieve them would be plenty of enjoyment, I'm sure that since they got stuck there was plenty of mud

Good advice. Not only will cops lie to suspects, they'll also lie in court, if they think they can get away with it. NEVER take the word of a cop!

now this is a law I would fully support, why should cops be allowed to do thing regular citizens can't? this is the same reason I think that all law enforcement officers and political officials should subjected to random mandatory extensive drug testing. I'm sure that more than a few of them do just as many drugs as I do and maybe if they couldn't get away with it they'd change the laws accordingly.
