Keeping the temperature without heating mat?

I used a heat mat for my first go and I see a lot of people are saying it’s totally unnecessary. How to you control the temperature without one?
I live in an old house with gas heat and in a climate that has a shit ton of snow and -0 weather. So the temperature in the house is never consistent.

Keep your fruiting chambers and jars well above floor level.
The thing with using a heating mat is that it will consistently be too hot.

Room temp is good enough, if it is comfy in the house, you should find a closet or something like that
Heating pads will dry it out which is bad
Wait for the warm season if it is really that bad
I'd still try it out though, RR said that he had a jar in a freezing cold garage that he forgot about that still worked, it just takes much longer which means the jars have a larger chance of growing bad stuff, it still kinda works though.

If you are going to heat, you should try to heat the room rather than the grow. Direct heat, as hikeadellic said, has a habit of drying stuff out or generally causing more harm than good.
If you're growing cubes then you can relax to a certain degree as they are pretty hardy and will be ok with some less than 'optimal' temps.

Ahh thank you guys so much! I already see the two mistakes I already made. Mat and floor! Stopping that this time for sure!

get trays or tubs off the floor fo sho.
you can get away with a heating mat as long as you use a thermostat with a probe and you put that probe in the substrate. that way you dont cook things.
these are another option depending on your setup

Remember that growing mycelium does generate its own heat, and that tubs provide some measure of insulation. Tubs stacked on top of each other, or jars/bags grouped close together, will help keep each other warm.
I, too, live in a house with wide temperature swings in the winter, and I find that the fungus is less affected by them than I am. If I'm even remotely warm enough in my grow space, then I don't even worry about my jars and tubs. Growth might slow down a bit, but that's never really much of a problem for me.
My tubs are on shelves in a small closet (up off the floor 👍), and surrounded by cfl bulbs on a 12/12 cycle, so there's a decent amount of external heat and insulation involved. I really don't lose any sleep over overnight temperature dips, though.
I look forward to growing in the dead of winter, and try to avoid it in the summer months at all costs.
