ziplocks and pasteurized substrate
    #2750053 - 05/31/04 03:08 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

i was wondering if 'virgin' ziplocks would make a good recipient for pasteurized subtrate/innoculant for spawning, i ran out of jars but i'm not ready yet to innoculate a full bath tub...
i was wondering if it would be good to put a tyvek filter...
besides that, my experiments on making PF substrate bags (with heat reasistant bags, not ziplocks) have mostly been a failure and the bags always got exploded or teared so i won't be using bags for sterilization again...
i know its not really advanced but i think here is the place to ask...
thanks already for your attentions!

If you would poke a few holes in them I don't see why they couldn't work, but don't put so many in that it would dry out.

Look into eatyou's flat cake tek. he uses ziplocks to do a BRFV/BRFV expansion, so they must be clean enough for that. Wether they are clean enough to handle the added time of starting from spores or liquid innoc I don't know. Personally, I wouldn't find out either. Just buy some spawn bags. If you really want to save money, buy bags without filters and use a polyfill stuffed collar (3-m style) or any other make your own bag method.

I just realized you didn't say what kind of substrate, for some reason I assumed it was a grain or BRFV mix. If it is something like castings/straw/dung etc that doesn't need to be sterile, then absoultely ziplocks will suffice.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

it's for bulk spawning, innoculating compost from more compost or PF cakes, i'd rather keep the grains in the jars...

Thats what I thought you meant -- should be fine for bulk where you have actual spawn, but not starting from spores, of course.

not from spores but perhaps liquid innoculant!

Hey dudie Brasialian Man-

Check out the bags that were under my eyes...or bag at least.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...part=1&vc=1

They weren'r optimal, but they worked non-the-less.

thanks josh, i have watched that post closely but didn't pay attention to the bag 'flatcake' before! =D

i wanna make an outdoor growing pretty much like you did!
so i don't think it's really an issue that it's not top optimal...
did you simply poke holes? i'm thinking of poking holes and doublebagging (leaving the outside bag open and upside down) and it all inside the incubation chamber which stays on the mid 20?C (nothing will be optimal here until i have a full lab set)...

Air exchange is important, some sort of filter should be used.

I meant that my results were not optimal. I don't doubt that the technique has great potential.

Good luck with the outdoor project. I will be starting mine very soon.

Hey i make a gallon ziplock log and 2 smaller ones a few days ago. It works well. I pasturized it a tray in my oven and filled up the bags when it was cooled. I used 70ml of spawn from WBS growth in test tubes and i poked 2 holes with a pen in each log. I think these are about 5-6 days old. Im thinking about either fruting them as is or using them as outdoor spawn

Why only two? Most teks for starw logs suggest pretty much perforating the surface of the log with lots of slits.

I made 2 pen sized holes but the myc blued up at the holes. Taking a syringe and poking holes all in the bag would work much better.

ziploc bags aren't airtight. gases will diffuse through the plastic membrane. it'd still help to have a few holes in it though.

i've finally made mine tonight (i was waiting for a jar to finish colonizing). i've poked them and put them inside another bag partially open in the incubator...
i'll keep you updated, hope they like my compost!
if it works fine will be a great cheap way to grow in bulk...
my next step will be to use the old iron bathtub that's forotten in a corner of the patio! =D

You should roll it up tight so it packs it together. I have a nice straw/oak chip casing in a rubbermaid siting out back ready to case thatnks to the straw logs.

i've made 'logs' like you! some are flatter than others...
what matter is the compost to be good, which i'm afraid because i'm just starting to make my own 'heavy' compost...
i might come up with a small scale compost tek one of these days, for who doesn't has room/need for a full compost pile.

I just took a 2x2x2' pile of hay and 25% composted manure, covered with a bag and wet down every 4 days and fliped. One month later i had some nice wet substrate that i just Pasturized in my oven in trays for 4 hours at 175. Mixed in a quart jar of creeper wbs spawn into a 5 gal bucket, and a few days after spawning,

its been cased and patched and now im waiting on a pinset.

hmmmm, what i suspected happened...
the air exchange is very poor on the bags, i must keep it airful for best results, actually a filtered air line passing through the bags (without pokes then) would be welcome.
i've lost one out of 3 bags, for bacteria.
i think i'll come back to solid recipients, maybe with experimental fancy auto air exchange setup...
also, my new compost was pretty heavy, i'm sure that would have much better chances with pure straw, perhaps i'll make some straw 'pillows'...
