I have a few jars that were PC’ed 3 months ago and have been sitting in a closet due to unfortunate circumstances. They look a little dried out, but I’d still like to use them. Have any of you done this? I could easily reload them but..

Should be aiight  if anything it'll stall from drying out but I'd guess it's just fine.  I've used 1-2 month old sterilized jars before without problem and seen other users use way older ones.

Thanks, I'll give a couple of them a shot and report back. For science!

What's best practice for dehydrating?  Do I need a food dehydrator or can I simply let air dry on the counter in the open?  I've heard mixed opinions.

A dehydrator is basically needed. You can buy some time by putting them in front of a fan. They dry quite quickly that way, and won't rot. But you can't get them "cracker dry" (not British humor) That requires a dehydrator. Ovens are poor dehydrators.

Universally, a dehydrator. Getting all of the water out within 24 hours is important.

No opinions involved. It’s a fact.

AND: I agree with Enojil. Fresh is awesome. Unfortunately for most of us it’s not always possible to consume the thousands of grams of fresh fruit a tub gives you before they go bad. A dehydrator is still a necessity.

I tried the fan and paper towel method and grew mold on the inside of the stems and ate them. Worst trip ever ended up throwing up then I was fine. I now own two dehydrators.

Just shook these jars.. How is the grain looking to you guys? Its washed wbs I went straight from the bag to a pot and boiled it for 40 monutes until the grains swelled. Kind of a sticky mess at first but now has the consistancy of a damp brf cake and is kinda spongy to the touch.

Waaaaaay over did it.  You don't want a spongey texture and you don't want a cake.

As a matter of fact, you don't want any burst grains if you can help it.

How do I moisturize the grains without losing moisture in them. I cant seem to get my grain to stay at the same moisture content. It usually dries up and im left with dry grains that I cant seem to get myc to grow on. when i do it like this is the only time I can get my jars to reach full colonization...? Its not hot where I have my jars its like room temp and the lids are sealed. What am i doing wrong here and how do I get myc to grow on dryer grains.

I just soak wbs for like 15 hours and then drain it and spread it on a screen for an hour before jarring it up.

It's hard to tell from the picture but are you just using MP tape? How big is your GE hole on the lid?

Yep, using mp tape and GE holes are the size of the nail I use to poke them out. I have more agar growing right now after I use the last of my grain I will try something else I'm almost out. Also thanks tedoro I usually do atleast three washes, I'll check that out thanks.

If you’re gonna use millet/wbs it’s better to have a bunch of tiny GE holes. When I started I just had one big one in the center of the lid but then when i shook the jars I got tons of seeds stuck up under the filter.
