yeah, i've been to that site a few times and can't seem to find the information i'm looking for. so you say lighting doesn't really matter, why do they say put in darkness if that's the case? and i've read to shake and turn the jars upside down every once in a while but i'd like to hear from you guys whether you think that's a good idea or not, and if it is how often to do it. THANKS. :)

The shaking is good if you are using birdseed.

well lighting can induce pinning which you would not want if there not fully colonized, and just tip the jars on their sides to let the co2 escape, though the top layer of verm. will go everywhere

hmmm... i don't know what happened to my post. what is the deal with putting tape over the holes in the lids of the jars? this wasn't mentioned anywhere in the PF tek info that i read (other than covering the jars with tinfoil while sterilizing to keep internal moisture levels correct). would it be ok to just have say... three 1/2pt jars with holes exposed sitting in a shoebox (to avoid light) at room temp during colonization?

Sounds good... just make sure you have a layer of verm on top of your substrate to filter out contam's. Your incubation temp should be between 75F-85F.. any less and your cakes won't show any signs of mycileum growth, any more and you will risk killing the spores. Just get your grandma's heating pad or the water heater from your old fish tank, this will allow you to keep the jars at a constent temp.

actually the jars seem to be coming along quite nicely. it's been 1 1/2 weeks and 2 of them are about 80% and one is at least 50%. some of the holes weren't big enough for the syringe to go through so the jar only 50% colonized was actually only enjected through one hole in 3 very close locations (point syringe sideways each direction). the other 2 jars were innoculated at at least 2 or 3 sites (all of the jars had the small hole problem. live and learn). surprising thing is that the bottoms of all jars are showing almost complete colonization. :D anyways, i'm assuming that's pretty good progress. :)
