best way to distinguish between pan subbs/pan foes?
    #2760395 - 06/03/04 10:42 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I have found either a pan subb or pan foe "ring" in my yard, the spore print is purple to black color, noticed what looked like minor bluing at the base of the stem, What im more interested is what do you look for the tell the difference? between the two? ive read the descriptions, but is the spore print the only way to tell the difference? especially since the print i took was very dark, that looked a bit purple where the print was lighter.

Forgot to note, in ohio, wooded area, with peat moss growing with typical lawn grass...damp shady...Will the pan foe print be like cinnamon brown? can it flucuate from brown to a very dark color?

yeah spore print is pretty much the determining factor.

pan foes: brown spore print

pan subbs: black spore print

And panaeolina foenisecii is the correct name, not pan foes or pan subbs. Even Aussies get confuses when North Americans mention subbs because they have Psilocybe subaeruginosa.

One way is that Panaeolina do not grow in manure or haystacks and /or compost heaps. Pan subbs have thicker stems with whit fibrils ont he stems and verticla lines spiraling up the stipe of the mushroom.

mj

And chances of m finding them in a lawn are zilch. Maybe one in ten thousand panaeolina foenisecii will be a Panaeolus subbalteatus.

And yes Joshua foound a lawn of them a few years back whic is extremmely rare.

mj

IF you read my paper on Close Encounters of the Panaeolus kind, there is a step-by-step method for iding Paneolus subbalteatus.

i find all my subbs in the yard. one or two in the horse dung. so its not too rare around here in michigan. one of the oddest things though, my pan foes also sometimes have black spore prints which is really odd. but i dont get many of them. so who knows? ive found about 120 pann subbs in lawns and about 20 foes.

Do the stem looks different when is grown in dung and when it does in grass?
maybe thinner ?

If your Panaeolina foenisecii have black spores then they are not panaeolina foenisecii.

The genus panaeolina has brown spores. never black.

Black spores are Panaeolus (Copelandia), Coprinus and Anellaria species and brown spores are Panaeolina.

There are four species of panaolina mushrooms and there are approximately 25 species of Panaeolus.

So You are incorrect when you say some of your panaeolina foenmisecii have black spores becasue it is genetically impossibl

No Panaeolus or Panaeolina mushrooms have purple color in their spore prints.

Chocolate-brown to purple-brown belong to the genera Psilocybe. Not Panaeolus or Panaeolina.

I am amazed that people see purple where there is none or black when a print is dark brown.

When you find more mushrooms that resemble Pan. foes but have black spores, please dry a few carefully and give me a PM.

Take a look at my incomplete page on subbs:

http://www.impakt.net/~tyler/subbs/

I go over how to differentiate the two species.

The probability of Pan subbs in lawns ius rare. so rare that the figures would suggest, one in five million may find a lawn at least once in a lifetime. so far only Josua has found such a lawn in the us in Oregon. ANd I think gumby may have. Mitchnast in a pasture, me in one pasture in Maui Hawaii on Manure and only two pan subbs in one manure pile on Oahu in the rest of the 12 years I lived in Hawaii and about ten in one field in manure in Tukwilla, washington. Gumby in georgia found pan subbs and Angry Shroom found a master fruiting in compost heaps in California. So think about the ten million people who have visited this site and then consider, "What are my real chances of finding Pan subbs. Especially when they grow at different seasons and now even int he pnw, in top soil with woodchips, as posted in a few images at Shroomster Enterprises Mushroomjohn's Shroom World.

have a shroomy day and good luck.

you know i am really starting to question this whole idea that pan subbs in lawns is rare EVERYWHERE. we went hunting again today, to a different subdivision and AGAIN we found around 100 specimens. we spore printed each one, they were all jet black. they all fit the description. other specimens have been bio-assayed earlier in the weak and were definitely active.

in southeast Michigan at least, i would venture to say that they are almost common in lawns rather than rare. along some streets we were practically tripping over them!

hopefully we'll get ahold of a digi cam soon to post pictures. if we get good conditions again we should be able to post several pictures of large patches of pan subbs growing in lawns and their corresponding prints.

I am almost positive i have a lawn full of them because so far all of the spore print results are JET black... not brown at all... YAY!!! MY BACKYARD IS FRUITFUL! (I hope)

Although this thread is slightly old, I would like to throw in my results of hunting for the past couple weeks or so:

Hunting in horse pastures with loads of shit, hay, etc: 0g dried pan subbs

Hunting in lawns: ~20g dried pan subbs

Dunno what the hell is with Ohio, but they are verrry common in grass AS LONG as it is kept very well. Verrry well. They actually outnumber the foes most of the time (if you know where to look that is).

*edit - And yes...I am really sure they were active subbs, as I certainly dont have 20g left anymore .

I would expect to find paneolus subbalteatus on a lawn that has been fertilized. As far as spore prints go, Brown is a very subjective statement. Maybee we ought to use some sort of standardized color chart to identify sporeprint color. When I was younger I was bent on finding subbalteatus but I kept on finding feonisecii. I know they weren't active and their spore print sure looked black to me. Maybee I am color blind.

this was a real old ass subject, and my post earlier was me being a stupid dumbshit. subbalteatus around here do only mostly grow on dung. they hardly ever grow on lawns. i have not found on yet.
