All things Overland. Show your rig. Share your discovery’s. Share your solutions.

Who is Overlanding these days? What are the best setups? How are you getting the most bang for your buck?

I wanted to make this thread because I’m hoping to build or buy a rig in the next couple of years.
Battery power has come a long way and this seems like a great combo with solar panels for remote power. Having a toilet onboard is essential for urban areas.

My crude setup:
I’ve had my 2003 Tacoma with a shell since 2005 and use it for work etc so when I go ‘Overland’ it’s just equipped with a plywood platform in the back for my camp mat and a sleeping bag. I carry a 5 gallon water jug and a shovel. Can’t get any simpler than that!

My new business will have me driving all over the west coast USA.
I don’t want to pay for hotel rooms and I don’t want to pay for AirBnB’s. I’d like to make a setup that is discrete for city sleeping yet ready with 4x4 for National forests.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated being thrifty and extending dollars is how I need to do it, however I’m ready to put some money into it, as an investment that will, in the end, help me save on travel costs and enjoy doing it!

Insulation, a gun or dog, and a shield for your catalytic converter. A waste bin with som bags to poop in.

You can fill black trash bags with water and leave them in the California sun to get warm, then pole a hole in it and make that a shower.

Camp stove and a big bag of beans and a big bag of rice.

:rofl2: Living in SF CA I’ve got lots of good tweak-chic reference material

Thinking outfitting a van like a transit or a sprinter is the way to go.

Vanlife definitely seems to be superior in urban areas or where it rains alot (a la PNW); overall stealthier. I'm living out of a *much* older Yota p-up and am constantly wishing I could stand up, or even sit up properly... Much as I love it, a full sized truck would probs be a happy medium: my buddy's 3500 is like a mansion.

Have you put a second battery in your truck yet?

And are you open to elaborating on your business??? (always looking for ideas)

Vanlife does seem like the way- man I see a lot of tricked out sprinters that rich folks outfitted during the pandemic. It would be cool to find a good deal on one of those once things get busy post pandemic and they decide to sell the rig! Still will probably be out of my league.
I have a lot of building experience but not sure I want to take on a project like that from scratch especially if I want to hit the ground running and use it with ease as soon as I get it.

I haven’t done anything to my simple truck setup I talked about in OP.

I saw a guy up on a local mountain last weekend with a hard top Westfallia it was not 4x4 or lowKey but man it looked chill. He was just posted up looking out at the Pacific while cooking up something delicious.

The business I’m starting is really just an extension of one I already had, however it fell apart during the pandemic so it’s really like starting over, except for I do know the ropes a bit.
I have a small import wine company so I work closely with very tiny producers from Europe. It sounds glamorous but it’s not, it’s hard work with a lot of uncertainty, and risk at times, stressful and frustrating…but it keeps me free from the “hourly day job” which I’m trying as hard as possible not to go back to.
I do lots of other side hustles but am hoping to build this to be my full time thing, however it will take me ponding the pavement to get placements and that sales I need.
Looking back I spent so much on hotels and AirBnB’s I’d like to cut that part out and put that money into the overland rig.

I’m so busy getting this thing back off the ground I will probably just have to continue until I can project some sales and find the funds to get the rig.
Not ideal but the business has to work for the overland to work. Chicken and egg thing.

Sprinters have some advantages for sure, but they're def overrated imho. You're basically taking on a mortgage at that point.

If you can't take living in the truck, checkout older vans. I met a dude a couple weeks ago who's been living in his 90s-era Ford for 12 years & still lovin it. I'd stick with the truck til you can't stand it tho, just put in a little bit of work to make it comfortable for ya. Adding a second battery is *easy* and lets ya run lights, speakers, etc without worrying about killing your rig.

F*** hotels, AirBnB's, and rent in general. There are multiple paths to affluence. Living in your truck makes you a certified Buddhist Economist. Put your money into something worthwhile
