How clean should agar Containers be before re using? * 1
    #27616251 - 01/12/22 02:22 PM (2 years, 15 days ago)

Reusing  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083HXXB34/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for no pour agar plates

Had a bunch of old contammed ones from last summer that I just left in a box and forgot to clean until just now. Took them outside and cleared them all out rinsed them out and got them nicely cleaned and left them to dry.

After drying- I noticed that some of them still have a a tiny bit of mold/black residue in the corners and creases on the bottom.

When I pressure cook them will it take care of that? or should I remove all of that slight residue and make them pristine before filling them with fresh agar and pressure cooking?

thanks

Definitely remove all residue, or as much as humanly possible.

I'd probably bleach them first along with warm soapy water. After that maybe even an Isopropyl wipedown for Overkill Mode.

Once I did that I would Pressure Cook them for 60 minutes at 15 PSI.

Edit: I forgot to look at those containers. Have you tested them to be PC'able? Those might not be proper for agar work.

Are you following a TEK?

Daaamn, gotta go that crazy huh? Shit I thought the PC would take care of it. Aight, thanks for response.

Think it was called pasty ez nopour tek but someone else recommended those containers from amazon to replace the glad tupperware. And Bods grain and transfer teks. All pretty sweet guides.

PCing will take care of mold in no time but I would remove visible black spots with a tooth brush. I rinse my dishes under the cold water and proceed as usual.

Looks like these are the holy grail containers as used by Mr Alien.

word! another question, how long can you let the agar sit in the containers before PCing? would they be alright after 24hours in the fridge before PC?

Yes, shouldn't be a problem.

I use these plastic containers and like them to be reasonably clean.  A boil in lightly soapy water melts any lingering agar. Sometimes I add a little bleach.

Mixing bleach with other cleaning agents like soap can be harmful, use  either or.

PCing the dishes will kill all the germs. Bleaching tubs is sometimes adequate.

Good tip. The problem isn’t the soap, it’s ammonia. Most soaps don’t have ammonia but some do, hence the blanket warning. The soap I use is Dawn, which has no ammonia.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/dawn-clorox-lethal/

I only do this to get old agar out. It happens sometimes, maybe after 4-5 uses and I prefer clear plates. Not a big deal and easy to handle with boiling.

I use glass petri dishes and, if I have some stuck parts, I use Oxyclean to get the stubborn bits out.  Just soak the dishes, or anything else, in a small tub with hot water and Oxyclean.  Then rinse very well after about an hour soak with hot water.
I usually wash the dishes afterwards as well with regular dish soap.
It works wonders!
Bleach is a sanitizer, not a cleaner.

did you do holes with tape or no holes and just leave lid on semi loose?

if the latter, do you wrap them in foil in the PC?

- No holes, no tape. Both are unnecessary and could introduce problems.

- I leave the lids a tiny bit loose but it doesn’t matter. The lids always loosen on their own.

- at first I placed them in quart jars and later foil. Now I put the plastic plates directly in the PC, naked on the trivet, just above water. Perfect every time.

noice, yeah that’s exactly what I do.

first started with the holes taped on the side and then wrap them fully in foil.. the  taping of the holes and the wrapping with the foil so time consuming I said fuck it and then just started doing them no holes, no foil and seems to work great.

just wanted some reassurance haha
