4 sided flow hood, I'm a genius right?
I'm 99.9% confident in it I just don't get the lighter at a perfect angle in some parts of the flow particularly the corners and the middle but it should work, my friend is using a similar setup and he rarely gets contam.
Just wanted to see if you could help me dial in my flow so that it's less patchy Stipe? Maybe I need an extra fan underneath too?

I don't know why you'd pay 1000 bucks for a filter unit when you can just build this
I have a similar setup and I get only a 49% contam rate which makes a majority clean plates. Itβs a lot smaller tho about the size of a birdhouse so I have to scrunch in there really small and get my fingers tightly in between the edges so I donβt fuck up. I agree though how can you justify paying for such a thing as an FFU when one of these is so easily made. Madness.

This is great! With 4 tall sides it's basically like having a 2'x8' work area. Tall enough for bags and dialed in the contam rate should be well within workability.

1. When building a FH does it matter if the pleats in the HEPA filter run horizontally or vertically?
2. Some FHs have a shroud or or partial cabinet walls around the filter, when might they be useful & if so how far should they extend?

The hepa will work either way, but vertical pleats are more resistant to damage from vibration.
Walls and top extending out from the filter face prevent dirty air from being drawn into the clean, and also keeps the clean air stream contained in the same area as the filter. It will allow laminar flow to extend further from the filter face than without. They can extend as far as the end of the work surface.

I need to remake my SAB, I bought one with a frosted bottom from Wally so I can't see through the top of the box. The ones with blue foam seals are nice.

Thanks for this post!!
Pouring over the forums on anything and everything flowhood related. I jumped for the $500ish one on Amazon with prime (10% off as well!). Anyways -- I got a prefilter (MERV 10 -- hoping this won't slow the flow too much) that I'll just carefully ducktape to the back. Got some foam to make feet. Got a rack (heh - I guess I'll always also be 12 and chuckle at this).
Loved the smoke test video. I could conceptually know that clean air comes out that way -- don't put dirty shit in the middle of the clean air and expect it to be clean...but seeing the smoke really really helped. What are they using to generate the vapor?
Also, fuck. I'm going to have to build walls for it. Aren't I. I'm so bad at building anything -- this will be good practice. A cover as well when not in use? Piece of wood in front?

You don't need walls, walls limit movements, imo. Walls are intended for bacteriology, etc, mush cult doesn't require them.
Having an open workspace allows for unimpeded workflow with jars and bags.

Well that's an immediate relief. I know that my environment and space aren't perfect by any means -- but I always want to do the best with what I have and always be working towards better -- I'm open to learn and fail fast if need be. I really appreciate the info -- thanks Stipe .
