Yoyoyo party peeps! I first posted this in 2006, I think and I have it buried in my cloning thread but I wanted to make an individual thread to stick in my links page and the amount of time it’s saved me in cleaning casing material off PE in the years I’ve been growing is priceless so I want to make sure everyone knows this trick
It’s really simple and if you haven’t heard of it, you might want to send me xmas cards because of how much time it’s gonna save you
First I wanna say that I highly recommend cutting your fruits off the sub with a scissors or electric knife or a hedge trimmer (I’m looking at you Tedsdead lol)… it took me a minute to come around to it but it really is the best way.. keeps your surface from having craters and keeps your fruits clean but even when you’re cutting them off and you’re growing something like PE where you use a casing, they can still have a decent amount of material on them after cutting. The ones pictured below weren’t cut, they were pulled from the casing because I wasn’t going for a second flush and I had my gf helping me and wanted to make it as easy as possible on her but it gave me a good opportunity to show just how well this cleaning method works
Cleaning is a breeze when using the “shake and bag” method.
First dry them in a dehydrator the recommended 24-48 hours. Then simply get a large ziplock bag (I prefer 2.5 gallon.. you can easily fit 4 dry ozs in em) and throw your dry, dirty fruits in the bag

Seal the bag up with some air in it and grab it scrunched up by the zipper

Now shake the shit out it.. I usually only shake for 20 seconds or so.. it works best when you use more dried fruits… they knock against each other, knocking the casing/cv off. The fruits will stay whole if that’s how they went in the bag.. I tear my fruits up when I put them in the dehydrator so they dry better/faster but trust me they’ll stay intact.. the shaking sounds more violent than it actually is to the fruits
After you’re done shaking, turn the bag 45 degrees and tug on one corner repeatedly so that all the loose material falls to that corner.. you may have to knead the bag a bit to get all the material to fall

That’s it! You now have clean fruits!

Take your fruits out and discard the material.. remember that the small stuff will fall to the bottom so if you’re want to get all the mushroom pieces away from the casing material in the corner, just keep tugging on corner till the pieces rise to the top of the casing pile
There might be a few fruits here and there that need a little attention if the material was really embedded in the stipe and you’re OCD about having immaculate fruits (obviously, I’m not lol) but it sure beats using a tooth brush on all of em.

This is stupid simple. Cannot wait to try this on the next flush.
I owe you at least 2 cards after this since I am using Fahtbags to spawn PF cakes and any small grain jars.

Trash bag tek! Well done!
That works nice with plain coir/grains substrate, verm from muda bottle casing still is stuck after shaking (nowadays I just go for huge chonkers like Melmak, way less of a mess to clean up, just shave the stuff off with a scalpel ).

Thanks for bumping this hazyhorse. I missed it the first time around.
And to you faht. We can inadvertently waste time at any and every step. Yet another so-obvious-why-didn’t-I-think-of it innovation that I would have discovered…never. Picking bits off is shit work!
