Hi Yield Hydrated lime is POTENT
    #2760861 - 06/03/04 05:05 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, I posted earlier about a casing mix going up to 10.5 ph using the 50/50+ (plus) casing mixture from Ryche Hawk. Hi Yield hydrated lime was used, but the recipie didn't work.

A second batch of 50/50+ (plus) was made without using the lime, and the ph registered about 6. This was a little low, so not wanting to spike the ph, only a tablespoon of the hydrated lime was added to the 35 cups of mixture.

That tablespoon spiked the ph up to 9.5! JUST FROM A TABLESPOON!

It is feared that the substrate is lost... DOH!

Lesson learned? Stick to limestone. Should've listened to Ryche's advice from the beginning.

Hydrated lime works well for me. It might not be for new cultivators, but if works ok.

A new casing was made using calcium carbonate (from grinding up oyster shell bits) and a ph of 8 was attained.

JUST before the old casing was to be swapped out, the ph was measured again just for kicks, and it registered 8.3! Go figure. Not sure why this would happen, but the old casing is to remain.

The hydrated lime is not a good long term source of pH adjustment. It will break down in the air after a while, and probably from biological processes goin on. Fizzacyst uses it to very good result. Just dont over do it.
