How's Ohio looking? I can only plan a couple trips to my ol faithful spots this year since id be driving for over 7 hours. Was thinking this next weekend however I dont think there will be enough wet stuff. Should I wait 2 more weeks or just send it this weekend?

Was able to go to a few flat spots Sunday before the temperature dropped with no success. Hopefully with the light dusting of snow it gave the ground a soak. With the temperature on the rise we'll find out by the 1st of the week.

Nothing in Ohio yet but we might get a flush starting soon since it went cold to rainy to hit 80s this weekend, but also still kind of early. I am going to try my spot in SE ohio mid next week, but I got a feeling it might still be closer to may 1st for ohio like it was the last two years.

Haven't spotted any ovoids in Lancaster today. I did notice a bit of mycelium growing from what appears to be fallen highly rotten box elder trees that were quite moist, not sure what kind of mycelium, but it was fuzzy/stringy looking, I suspect that it could be ovoid mycelium, but only time will tell. I'm thinking we need more rain and perhaps there will be decent growth next week.

Still a bit too cold. If we get a good rain in about a week conditions will be perfect for the season to start. Earliest i've found was the 29th last year-- lets see if we can beat it this year

Wait a couple weeks. I went out today again after rain last night and there’s galerinas EVERYWHERE but nothing else at all besides dryads saddle. Also in about 5 days it’s going to get into the 30’s again at night for a couple nights. I would shoot for roughly two weeks from now they start popping up. You MIGHT get lucky and find some in the next 3 days as it’s going to be 70s and 80s but I’d imagine with another cold spell coming they won’t fruit until the first week of may. Just my take on it. I’d wait.
Oh and this weird orange stuff

I’m looking to take a “field trip” in case I get lucky in finding some fruits this year, I’ve done my research and have settled at around 5 or 6 grams fresh for a level 1 experience.
Just out of curiosity … (I plan on bringing a scale)
What would you guys say an average fruit weighs in your experience?

Thank you. I cant get out to my spots at all unfortunately and these pictures are a perfect signifier of where the seasons at. First few little tiny ones should start popping this weekend but full swing won't happen until good solid spring showers and high humidity as usual. I was overly optimistic about an early start to the season similar to a few years back, because I hate ticks. Its such a treat to be able to search when the grass isn't even as tall as your shoes vs up to your neck.

So it turns out the spot I was looking into is not as beech-y as I thought. Red maple seems to be the dominant species in the lowland along the creek…
Any input? Acer to Acer? maybe? I mean I have seen dryads grow out of Japanese zelkova.
So this is the habitat again…(granted the pics are from the fall), Lots of wet areas mixed with, dry islands, borderline swampy, tons of skunk cabbage with a decent creek/stream running through it.

Glad it’s not just me. I have seen very few mushrooms in general. I assume this is not typical for this time of year.

What would you guys say an average fruit weighs in your experience? - Soloist - it’s hard to provide an average when cap and stem size varies so widely - Range is about 0.5 g up to 10+ grams - At the low end you are looking at dime sized caps and the top and 2 to 3 inch diameter -
Enjoy G

Average size is dependent on the area, weather and substrate most the ones i find have caps the size of a quarter. Weight can also vary wildly, towards the end of the season the can grow very dense and large due to the hot weather.

Got any tips on finding ovoids? Have been searching for them on and off over the years, but haven't had any luck.
