A lot of people stick with what worked for them first. What have people tried to come to the decision? I know a guy who has used wbs and millet and likes wbs.

#1 - Rye
#2 - Popcorn
#3 - WBS (red/white millet)

This is just for spawn, I don't do strait grain (well, sometimes...).
I tried strait white millet but had problems with water content. Rye berries are easier and more forgiving. 24-36 hour soak and they are perfect, no extra cooking. Popcorn soaks up a tremendous amount of water in comparison, but soaking never worked for me, it always needed to be simmered after soaking (too much cooking). WBS is full of seeds I don't want (sunflower), and clumps too much (even with gypsum). Slight problems with water content there as well, with exploded kernals the #1 problem. But I have used all with equal success for spawn. For a strait substrate I would vote for Rye. Popcorn usually gives one good flush and thats it. WBS usually ends up with poor water content but is ok with a sufficient casing layer. Rye has performed best for me as a sole substrate (casing).

WBS
Whole corn?
I haven't fruited this yet,but it does colonise well.

But,I would have to say that WHITE MILLET is by far the best,IMO!

ive only ever used wild finch seed. works awesome, very few sunflower seeds in it, i really dont see any, it just has a good amount of thistle seed that tends to group together when you load up jars, dont know why. but works great for me.

Well I have tried WBS, tried Popcorn, and loved both.

And I cant decide which I like better, but I have been thinking about Rye for such a long time, some day soon I am going to give it a shot, but I could see myself liking each grain for different reasons.

And I remember thinking Popcorn, that will suck, well its easy to shake , grows quick and from what I have seen produces potent shrooms.

But like I said, I HAVENT tried Rye, or Quinoa etc.

So I say ALL the grains are great, except I REALLY dont like brown rice flour, IMO.......the shrooms arent great, I dont even like using BRF, they day I ate a mushroom from a WBS casing is the day I said goodbye to BRF.
(if I had to I would use it as spawn for shit, nothing more.

So, I cant decide what my fav grain is but I can sure say BRF is way down there at the bottom. :thumbdown:BRF

all I've used for grain is white millet but I see no reason to use anything else....its small so you get tons of spawn points in bulk...its also more nutritious than corn or rye..if doing straight grain tho you pretty much HAVE to mix in fc verm for good results
