panaeolus subbaltaetus 2004
    #2759950 - 06/03/04 10:01 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

ahhhhh. so after work i go trudging in the wet grass to a fairly new heap of rotting straw. for weeks ive been keeping tabs on a litter of kittens that was in a cavity in the straw. they are quite cute.
so far the heap has sprouted a few species of coprinus, conocybe, and some leucocoprinus. but today isthe first day ive found pan subs anywhere this year.
its a very cold spring, in its defence however, it has been raining practically nonstop (all light rain) for weeks.
its supposed to continue this way till midsummer.
this is the latest first haul ive found. it is also the most robust. and the fact that these were growing on straw in a region that seldom supports such conditions is a good sign indeed.

also these mushrooms show quitea substantial bluing reaction
all over, you cant see it for contrast of the reddish color, but where they lack red, the blue shines through.

to elaborate my point of contrasting colors
i will reverse the pic so blue becomes red and vice versa.
the two would cancel one another out to a dull brown as the red is far more prominent

and voila, the mystery solved. the reason pan subb only bruises at the base where colorless mycelium exists.

i?ve also encountered unpigmented (possibly albino) specimines of this speceis that showed bluing all over.
