You should do both. Both are SO easy outdoors. The left-side pic in my sig is outdoor pans. Literally all I did was take a fully colonized grain jar, dump it on the ground, scatter a thin layer of dry aged manure over the grains (talking so thin you could still see some grains through it), scatter some straw over the top, then water with a watering can once and forget about it. After 2 or 3 weeks, every time it rained, I'd get a flush of pans like shown in the pic about 2-4 days later. That's from just 1 quart jar of spawn.
For cubes, I simply tossed my shoeboxes that wouldn't fruit for after 14 days onto the ground outside under a tree or shrub. Most of them created fruits that were the biggest I've ever grown - much bigger than indoors. Here's an outdoor cube photo but these aren't full grown. Wish I took pics of the massive ones I grew....

That’s amazing! I assumed critters would destroy the patch trying to get at the grains.

Done did an update! Got some germs on me Tamp-Pollock Couple of pix to save you a click on my sig. A few more close ups there.
These are from my first try at spore prints so I was afraid to share until I had a chance to test them. I didn't want to send out a bunch of dirty crap if I had messed it up. But now I think I am comfortable posting them in the marketplace. Anyone see anything that says otherwise?

The squirrels do dig around through there for sure, but don't seem to do enough damage to prevent tons of fruits from forming, at least in my experience. You can put chicken wire down to protect it - I've done that for my existing wood-lover beds because they take so long to fruit and seem more fragile and sensitive to disturbance than cubes. I'm only on my first year of wood lover beds though, and the temps just haven't gotten cold enough yet here for them to fruit.

That's awesome. I spent quite a bit of time time this past summer landscaping my backyard and I set aside one area specifically for a patch or two. It's nestled under some lilac bushes with some ornamental grasses and azaleas to hide them from neighbors/people walking by and they'll get indirectly sprayed by my sprinklers and perfect dappled shade all day. Since I have to pack up my lab every April I figured this will be an easy way to give me an extra month or two out of my cult season. I'll need to figure out how to protect the patch from squirrels and rabbits though..I hate those MFs!

Big Crack in the house! Mate, your oat tek was the only shit that worked for me when I first started this shit just over a year ago! I tried 3 or 4 teks and got horrible results. Yours was the only one that worked perfectly every time!

Hindsight what zone you in?
I can get cubes, gourmets, woodies, and anything else I want outside but no pans yet! Plenty of non-active pans. I've dumped so much spent pan substrate, grain, lc, agar, in a designated shit pile and nothing. May just need to use ground. Nothing tends to work from the shit pile but weed mushrooms.
Secret with outdoor is no grain! Most things seem to eat wood. Haven't done pans. My woodies are always pure sawdust no need for grain IME.
BRF might be the ticket for outside haven't used it in years was going to experiment in the spring.

Woohoo we've got the first signs of life on my Gandalf plate! Made a small, slightly less boring update to my log, but it's still pretty fuckin' bland at the moment.

I thought you could keep prints forever. I have them in the envelopes in a drawer. Maybe that's incorrect?

You can keep them as long as you like. They just may not germinate eventually. (I couldn't resist)
Fresh spore prints are definitely easier to start germination ime. I am running some of the same prints in LAGM 22 as I ran in 21 and the old ones are all taking their time getting started where the fresh prints are jamming already. The older ones have been in foil inside of ziploc bags in a drawer the whole time. It is really dry here year round, so that may be a small factor.

No you can. But germ times will swing wildly after a while. I like waiting 2-3 days.

I have found all you need for outdoor pans is for night time temps to stay above 70, and for humidity levels to stay above 50ish and without a lot of wind exposure. The more humidity the better. The most ideal conditions I had (based on frequency and canopy) was when we would get multiple overcast rainy days in a row where the temps stayed in the 70's - 80's day and night. I think many parts of the world would support these conditions at some point during the year. Obviously some places will have a longer season than others.
