I have written a trip report some time ago. They are my favorite mushroom so far. They were deep, insightful, and "innocent". I tried going through some dark things in my life and it's as if it did not understand what dark is. It felt like a naive child who has not been spoiled by the greed and terrors of the world, and yet more knowledgeable than anyone you could imagine. Silly beautiful CEVs, profound jorney through forgotten life events that shaped who I am today, and the most uplifting, self-loving experience I have ever had. This was on 1.35g dry.
Ps: the african uplifting vibes of the album "Tales of the inexpressible" by Shpongle were a perfect match for this african beauty

With a set of dark blue footprints across it. Also, pretty sure it's like self-casing mycelium. That stuff stays soaking wet always, and keeps the main mycelial body free of contaminates. I'm not the first to say this, I know...

Bought a swab recently and gunna be getting it on agar in the coming weeks. I’m hoping I don’t run into the sorts of stuff AKA has been running into. Read through the entirety of this thread one evening

Lol that last picture is actually decent believe it or not. There’s some overlay but the pins get through no problem.
Now the stuff I was getting a year or so back was bad. I could see pins trapped under the overlay and had to cut them out so they could grow sometimes
I say look for tomentose myc. Also that shoebox is a pint of spawn instead of a quart and still colonized faster than some cubes.

A few days ago I did something questionable with this species just for the sake of it. I had four completely colonized jars from a Natalensis clone (that I thought were clean) sitting in the fridge for a while because I had little time to dedicate to mush cult over the past two months.
Once I finally got around to spawning them to coir in shoeboxes, I opened the jars and found that they smelled AWFUL. They had this pungent sweet smell, kind of like a sweet champagne mixed with a rotting orange. I was pretty bummed but proceeded to spawn them anyway at a ratio of 1:3 (CVG) with a straight coir layer.
The smell persisted for a few days but I let the shoeboxes ventilate without the lids near the window for two days and now it's completely gone. Nine days after spawning I see a bunch of knots.

I'm obviously not expecting the best results from these shoeboxes but if anything this could be anecdotal evidence for Natalensis being really though against bacteria. If true, then these mushrooms should probably become the beginners species of choice moving forward.

Took multiple pics, and this less then steller is the best I came away with
I took 3 transfers from the germination plate, and here are how they are growing out
Anything stand out to you Nat enthusiasts to start xfering out of?

I've still got the germ plate if thoughts are to go back:

If you rip it down the stem from the base all the way through the cap you can take some cuts from the inner cap. This is how I take clones from hollow mushrooms.

Yeah I figured I'd have to go for the cap. Not a huge fan of having to but I'll give it a whirl see what happens. I don't have super great mobility in my hands so I struggle with tissue culture as dexterity is a must

My first Natalensis jar to finish. Spawned this to CVM today. As others have mentioned, this kind of pattern can suggest contamination with cubes, but not so much with Nat. I know this jar is clean.

Here is a plate I put to grain last night. The strange ropes that appear over the top are unlike anything else I have ever grown. Not all plates do this - I'd say 1 out of 7 do it.

Is that a Nat plate? I’m due an agar session later and have a Natty swab that I think you may have convinced me to put to agar also. Plus I just got my No.7 scalpel handle delivered today so gunna give that a whirl too.

Yes it is a nat plate. I have two nat prints from two different sources. One from a member and one from a vendor. Both are growing out on agar and grain differently from cubes, but also growing differently from one another.

Very interesting indeed! This will be my first time with anything other than cubes so pretty excited to see if mine turns out anything like this. Will post updates as and when!
