Need help identifying these.. Peruvian Torch? (354kb images)
    #2759786 - 06/03/04 08:07 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hello,

Okay, I have these cactii below which I've been growing for a while.
However I'm uncertain as to the species, they came from different sources who insist they're Trichocereus Peruvianus (Peruvian Torch).

What do you guys think?

Secondly why is the one in the first two pics "pupping" so much? I'd kinda like it to focus on "normal" growth so I can graft things onto it.. Perhaps I should behead & root the pups? Though I imagine that would just encourage even more pupping ...
First two pics are Trichocereus Peruvianus (Peruvian Torch)?
You may choose only one
Yes
No (Post your alternative)
Babies in 3rd pic are Trichocereus Peruvianus (Peruvian Torch)?
You may choose only one
Yes
No (Post your alternative)

So thats quite a few people who think the first one isn't peruvian torch. Any ideas what it could be?

the top sure is a Cereus peruvianus monstrose, probably the blue knobby form, which i find very beautiful.
i have one of each form!
and i had a crested CP but the mealybugs ate it all...

i found strange that it seems there's a five ribbed on the low right of the second picture, which i think is unlikely for peruvianus.
could be juuls giant or scopulicola/peruvianus hibrid...

Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that FH... I thought it looked strange too. The 3rd pic is definately T. pachanoi

Look at the spines, and look at some pictures... Does that look like a pedro to anyone else?

is there some pedro peruvianus diffrence I'm not aware of?

No need for me to look at pictures as I have a few hundred trichocereus in the other room. I have some young peruvianus that look identical.. I have many young pachanoi that look nothing like it.

Felix, That peruvianus you sent me looks identical.. You can see that there are many spines uncharacteristic of pachanoids..

But it is only a picture, and cacti aren't my speciality so I could be wrong.

Well if the top is indeed a Cereus Peruvianus, I guess its "doomed" to the life of being an ornamental; which I guess is not a bad thing as I'm growing quite fond of its appearance.

I really hope the ones in the 3rd pic aren't T. Panachoi though. I've been growing pretty confident that they are in fact T. Peruvianus.

Any other opinions?

Well if the C. Peruvianus is going to end up anything like these:

- then its definitely a keeper!

i have a pic of my Cereus of the latter form you posted...
take a look!

this is the classic monstrose, your, the blue knobby one is native from argentina if i'm not mistaken and keeps it's columnar form rather than spreading tentacles around...
the top pic might be one, i hard to tell...

alkaloidahoic: what peruvianus? cereus or trich?
did i send you any? how strange, i can't remember...

oh, now i remember!
do you think that is a peruvianus?
because if it is peruvianus it's the 3rd t. peru form i have!
all of them distinct...
one has little areoles (scop/pach like but dark green, long needles), the other has medium areoles (yours) and the 3rd has large areoles (the standard t. peru seen on pics with thick long central spines).
not to mention the black spined one, which could be a peruvian too...
when i have pups to spare i'll put them to trade...
