Or rip some old junk apart, stuff different things together and see how it works. And put Gentoo on it.

That sounds like a pretty privacy-centered setup.

This is gonna sound crazy but a dell xps 13 on sale is just about the best laptop you can get for the price.  Wait for a sale, they are usually on the order of 30 to 50% off.

Reminds me of Gamers Nexus's review of a dell computer. I hate Dell, have done ever since I had the misfortune of using one of their computers in 1995 and I'm surprised to see they've gotten worse since their heyday of 2001. Still using propietary parts. Fuck Dell. It's not that I even care about E waste, although I know that's a big issue. I just hate the idea that, for no good reason, Dell will go out of their way to use propietary motherboards, power supplies, cases and storage when it'd serve them better to use industry standard components.
Apple computer does the same thing but at least they do it fairly well (Inb4 someone posts one of the numerous Louis Rossman videos showing the power regulation chip is right next to the really hot components so it'll die after a few years, rendering your laptop dead, or that long essay about how Apple deliberatly makes bad design to force consumers to buy more of their shit) and they've got their marketing so people see apple products as a status symbol.

Dell is cheap and nasty. The only thing they do that I like is monitors and those are usually LG third party with a Dell badge on them.

They're all the same, they use the same components from the same factories. Despite the thread title Dell enterprise laptops are the best available this generation, 7400 series, imho.

Choose your demon, just be sure to get 3yr warranty.

I'd look at the gamers nexus prebuilt series. Generally, a small local firm where you can collect a computer from is the best bet. As shown in one of the videos, there's a risk of parts falling out, which is no good for someone who doesn't know, nor wants to know, PC assembly.

I can't reccomend laptops, I don't use them.

But if I did get a laptop, I'd be seriously considering the framework. Their design philosophy aligns with my own, they're not going to install bloatware, and if I requested it, they'd probably supply the laptop without any operating system on it so I can be sure it's setup exactly as I want it to.
But, it's not the cheapest. If I wanted a cheap laptop, I'd go for a thinkpad.
If I wanted portable gaming, I'd get a steam deck.

Dell business computers and servers are top notch, as is their business grade on-site warranty and after sales service.

Consumer grade computing is a fucking minefield. One could substitute any computer brand for this story. So many crap budget machines out there. So many woe is me stories.

The Dell LATITUDE is a solid computer. It's designed for "bussiness" users so they use way better quality plastic and parts that hold up way better compared to the shitty xpiron or however it's spelled. Better quality chips and better quality motherboard. My last 2 laptops were Dell Latitudes. The most recent one is an 3ghz i7 from 2014. I upgraded the ram to 16gb and upgraded to a ssd and it is fast as lightning now. Getting them refurbished, I have never paid more than $275 for them.

The only thing is that whatever computer you get, install YOUR OWN windows operating system without all of the manufacture bloatware. Only install the drivers that you really need.

Your post scares me because I use a Thinkpad and just last night I was watching a video* about external hard drives and the person in the video flatly stated that your hard drive will eventually die and showed a clip of an upset person in front of a laptop. Of course, I was already aware of this, but I just find it to be coincidence that I saw your comment died a few hours after I saw that video. And it's even more of a coincidence because I was updating another thread in this forum when you made your comment and I rarely post in this forum (however, I decided not to make the post).

After seeing that video last night, I was considering making a post in this forum asking if anyone could donate a hard drive to me, pointing out that it was filled with psychedelic data, but I'll do it in this thread.

*Hard Drives Explained - Buying Guide for 2022 [HDD vs SSD]

I've been using computers since the early 90's, mid 90's when I got my first 286, never had a hard drive die on me. And that 286 got dropped when I had an arguement with my dad. It got scratched, every time I rebooted it'd lose it's data, but I was still able to reinstall dos on it and games. Was pretty annoying, took half an hour and I'd have to have all my games on floppy (which I did back then) but eventually got a 500mb hand me down hard drive which worked in it.
I remember it, it had a program in it called ship.com, I typed it in to find out what it did. It makes the read/write arm move off of the platter. Literally you run the program prior to shipping a hard drive to park the arm. Later on that was built in automatically into the firmware.

If you're on a laptop or have a portable hard drive that you're swinging around and dropping like a mad cunt whilst it's on and writing data, yes, the hard drive might die, it might suffer a head crash. But if you treat them with respect and don't knock them, they're fine.
My computer has a 4tb drive in it. I did knock it. Fortunately it was off at the time (I was being very stupid and lazy, next time I will remove the drive if I need to get around it, not just leave it hanging). Smart self diagnostic tells me it's in good health, crystal disk mark tells me it's slow, really on the low end of that sort of drive, as a precaution I backed up all my music and other valuables onto an SSD that has the room.

In the future I will be building my own NAS. A good external hard drive usually has a network interface as a feature, but they're expensive. I have the parts lying around to build a high spec one. Just need a motherboard, ram, power supply and some hard drives.
