Dell business computers and servers are top notch, as is their business grade on-site warranty and after sales service.

Consumer grade computing is a fucking minefield. One could substitute any computer brand for this story. So many crap budget machines out there. So many woe is me stories.

Order your own not Dell and put it together oneself.  Can see through the deception.  Can do.

I've always had good experience with Dell.  Had two desktops back in the day, they never broke and I only tossed them once they were obsolete.

Just got me a brand new XPS 15 laptop last week for Xmas.  Has that 16:10 aspect ratio and basically no bezel anywhere which looks pretty bad ass.  I'd buy more Dell shit.

Meh, maybe. I'd take a Dell Latitude 7400 over any ThinkPad. Definitely better than the new HP ProBooks or even EliteBooks though.

Got all frothy when they brought them back out, but after getting some in found they weren't the same of the ThinkPads of old.

Hmmmm.... yeah I guess I'll be the weirdo then because I say Thinkpad > HP > Dell

I guess maybe it's also worth noting I use Linux like religiously and I don't do any computer gaming, so maybe we just have a umm different user preferences.

I'm with You, Kreg.
Thinkpad with Linux here as well.
My cousin had a Dell crap out a week before the warranty ran out.  Serviceman came out and told him the MB is timed to crap out after the warranty runs out.
He replaced the MB and also the screen and told him it will work ok forever now.  And it did.
I won't touch a Dell after that.
Always Lenovo here.

Yeah that sounds about right. And for me it's a lot of ergonomics too. HP laptops are flimsy pieces of crap that explode when you drop them and overheat when you run MS paint, Dell laptops are thick nokia bricks you could smuggle cocaine in. Thinkpad's are like sexy sports cars with the famous slick nonstick chiclet keyboard, trackball, perfect mousepad size with no buttons as it should be, perfect amount of slimness and durability. Oh and that little light ON THE OUTSIDE that gives you charger and battery indication? MMMM. Thinkpads are hot.

At home I just use a tablet for most of my computing, have an old HP desktop running Linux that I use to pirate stuff and watch YouTube vids mostly. All my workstations at home and work are Linux.

Here at work I've got all the toys, laptops, towers, servers, storage and more. The opinions I make about devices and software are normally based on reliability and functionality rather than aesthetics. I'm only looking at business grade year anyhow so few of them are honky bricks. In this last generation of laptops I've had far more issues with hardware and hardware compatibility of ThinkPads than any other issue with all my supported notebooks together. USB hub issues, power button issues, screen hinge issues... just general woe that I wouldn't expect from expensive devices. Not a single Dell notebook from this generation has come in for service for hardware issues.

Here's a picture taken now, ThinkPad open there that I'm looking at this moment, pile of other notebooks and PC's on the left.

Sounds like bullshit what the serviceman supposedly said. Urban myth or straight up fabrication. I've been working with computers a long time and have never heard of such a thing.

Dell, like HP, Lenovo, whoever, don't have insiders working for them as servicemen. They are regular old computer techs who run their own (or are employed by) private businesses and get a contract to do servicing for them. That's why they are running numbers and parts over the phone and getting permissions when at your house. They don't even work for them, they are contractors.

Some machines\parts have abysmal failure rates at certain parts of the bell curve, but that is shown and verifiable as failure rates not as built in self destruct features. A new part to fit the same laptop will have the same average failure rate. We even see this in other modern electronics like washing machines and televisions. A surefire way to get your ass sued to hell and lose is to build in literal countdown to destruction features in your products. That's not only illegal but business wrecking behaviour.

So many logical errors in the story. Fit for social media only.

You must have heard about HP getting busted for the timers in the ink cartridges....
Do not underestimate the large corporations.  They are in it for the money any way possible.
Dell was one of these and this service man was a legit Dell rep.
I have also been working on computers for a long time, and I have seen lots of it.

Canon especially as well. They have been flogging printers at a loss and killing it on shady cartridges since forever. That's the business model. So many law suits. New ones happening now as far as I know. Printers are not computers though, that is not what we are talking about.

How do you know a tech that didn't even come to your house nor speak to you works directly for Dell? C'mon man. I get the urge to counter, but don't jerk me around.

Please reference about any countdown to failure timers on actual computers or components. I have never read of such a thing. I'm happy to be wrong, it's good to learn stuff. It'd be an insane thing to do with planned obsolescence apparent through architecture, memory and chip design, but I'd still love to read about it.

Last generation of PCs I saw a strong motherboard failure rate on a particular series of HP desktops, close to 10% over the lifetime of them. They didn't all fail at the same time, though I saw quite a lot in the start and many too early in the end of the bell curve. It was just a shitty component. It was apparent enough that I got HP to send me a couple of spares so I could swap them out myself rather than having a tech come out and waste everyone's time. It's stuff like this that gives rise to legends of planned failure, when in fact it's just shitty engineering and/or manufacturing and costs companies far more in warranty servicing and lost revenue when people don't buy more of their computers. I certainly didn't replace them with HP desktops this round, the only HPs I bought in the last few years were Z series workstations. Too many issues with the desktops. Case in point.

The generation before that HP was bulletproof, both towers and notebooks, and I didn't have a single failure over the whole deployment. They got sloppy, skimped on research and production costs, used reputation to sell a generation of machines and paid the price with shitty reviews and lost future revenue. This cycle goes on with all the manufacturers though. This generation it's Dell that is bulletproof in my deployment, but I don't anticipate it will stay that way either.

I've been using a dell xps 13 for the past 3 years.  Works ok, it is very light and small and portable.  I purchased an external video card enclosure, and run one over the lightning port for when its docked so I can play games.  Handles many AAA game titles like this, but at say only 80% of what it would were it a PC.  I'd say in general only buy a laptop if you NEED portability, otherwise they are expensive and do not last long.

I love me some StinkPad, though they slowly turned to shit after that Nehalem shrink. But that T480 seems a good compromise with Thunderbolt and two batteries, but currently I have no need for a quad core.

i7-3520M daily driver, i7-620M just because and some Kaby Lake to mess around. All X series.

Some time ago I've swapped out a semi dead base board out off a X201, with a nose stuffed full of ket. Easiest to service. Said thing gonna get the CoreBoot treatment soon.

I've been using only Dell XPS laptops for the past 5 years.  I'm really happy with them - the keyboard is great, they are thin, fast, lightweight, durable and have great displays if you go for the UHD.  The only thing I don't like is the trackpad, I always carry a bluetooth mouse in my computer bag.  Probably not Dell's fault though, trackpads are just awkward in general.
