That's an interesting option. Since I plan on putting up a new batch of oats tomorrow, it's timely.

Thanks, boom.

Np buddy. Make sure to pop some out of the hull and split them apart make sure that center is hydrated.

If it looks too clumpy or starchy you can give it a post boil rinse and park it in the fridge overnight to dry out a good bit.

Another reason that bottle Tek is the best starchy grain is no prob the coir helps unclump it.

What is going on in the top left part of this box? Mycelium there seems unhappy and stalled since I introduced fruiting conditions.

Could it be contaminated or too dry or too wet? There was a large air exchange hole next to it for a couple of days.

I've had agar solidified in a media bottle since July, bad idea to heat and use?  I don't want to have to heat it, dump it, and prep more right now :frown:

Is that coir?

My guess is too wet and bacterial. Iffy spawn or for sure bacterial spawn never responds well to super wet conditions. Sometimes when I get a spot like that it's because the tub lid isn't flat and that's where condensation drips

Yes, coco coir and vermiculite. Green tinge is caused by flash. It is the same colour as the rest irl.

Btw water beads don't form up on that part for some reason.

Couldn't you play it safe then and just run it through the PC again?

I just lit the burner for a short PC cycle. Sterilizing 1000ml of agar with nutritional yeast and I'm sterilizing my scalpels, inoculation loops and the new stainless steel metal straw I'll be testing out for agar transfers.

Sterilizing the tools is the first step in my attempt to figure out the cause of and eliminate my bacteria issues this season. Next is punching bigger holes in my SAB and using higher quality oats as well as trying out millet. I'm waging war on contaminants!

Id like to use a straw I have. How would I release the donor to the new plate?

It doesn't - you just use the straw to cut a circle then you transfer the agar disc to a new plate with your scalpel. I'm hoping it works for me as well as it does for everyone else. I'll find out later tonight!

Thinner the better, often if a wedge becomes stuck it’s because the agar is too thick or the object used to cut is too small of a opening.

I never have that problem on my plates but I’ve been sent some
Thick poured ones that it happened with

I just got done taking some transfers in the SAB with the Stainless Steel straw - it was a bit awkward because my straw needs to be trimmed down but it worked well. I got one plug stuck in the straw from the cooling plate but I was very happy with how well it went! I also had 1g of yeast in these plates so I'm very hopeful for these!

I still need to figure out how the hell to get my transfer piece centered on the receiving plate though  mine are always off center by a noticeable amount no matter what I take transfers with...oh well

Gross...do you prep grains in that bucket? I've heard a few people mention lately the amount of grain residue left in prep buckets has lead to contam issues for them in coir

That was a brand new rinsed out bucket. I left several buckets like that for a couple weeks after prepping them as I suspected that specific coir was causing me problems and switched to another coir. They all looked the same when I opened them up. It was indeed the coir that sucked.

what brand coir was it? I'd like to avoid that, especially now since I'm changing coir brands

I'm surprised it's rotting on the coir, you know since it's "inert" and all. Ha.
I mean I recently went back to seriously treating my coir before adding spawn because I know it's dirt as fuck. But your is like super dirty, and full of nutes?? I had some growth similar a month or two ago with trich, but that's alot. Where'd you get it?

What brand of shitty coir was this?

I been really happy with coco bliss it’s a lil pricier than others but really clean. Canna coco always good too.
