Timelapse of Sclerotia Formation from Sclerotinia sclerotiorum * 3
    #27588548 - 12/20/21 04:25 PM (2 years, 4 months ago)

I just posted this time-lapse of a sclerotia-forming plant pathogen that I isolated from some bagged lettuce. This is the first time I've isolated a sclerotia-forming fungus, with the exception of a Panaeolus sp.

Full observation and DNA barcode:

Cool video! how long was the growth process? Have you tried inoculating a plant?

The wide shot took was from one plate and took 11 days and about 800 photos. The macro shots were taken with another culture over the course of two weeks.

I've not tried intentionally infecting a plant, but it wouldn't be difficult. I'm careful about not introducing known pathogens to plants outside of their natural environment.

solid documentation. And right on, I was envisioning a indoor potted houseplant or tissue culture or something that you could autoclave or burn or somehow properly dispose of. Tissue culture would be cool if you could observe the infection under magnification. Also, I kinda figured S. sclerotiorum grew everywhere. I would have even guessed that spinach was from southern California. Nevertheless, I respect your position and it is probably more responsible to not play around with it. Do you autoclave your samples before disposal? Thanks for sharing

I'm not against experimenting with it. Just not my area of focus. I have some dilute bleach in a small bucket that I use whenever I need to dispose of microbes.
