Is it stiff? If it isnt stiff felt it wont work.

Stiff felt is sold under the name ez-felt or you can find it in the upholstery
section of major retailers. Just ask for stiff felt

I'm using 4mm in combination with 2 layers of 3m micropore tape on 4 holes(1/8") without any problems. A thicker felt(5mm) would create fitting issues under the lid, I think.

Stiff enough to not flop over when it's held up on its own. It's just over 2mm thick. It's the same kind of craft felt you can buy in 9x12 sheets. I'll check another store and see if they have anything stiffer/thicker. Layered up twice there is no visible gaps.

I'm going to try it though as the poly would be the primary filter anyway. I should be able to get 3 layers under the ring maybe fused the edges with a lighter.

I wonder if Tyvek would be a potential substitute for the stiff felt? I've had issues finding the felt as well.

I found the felt but it's 45 mins away.

The regular craft felt didn't work even with the edges melted togather. It just kept popping out while tightening.

In case you don't find ez-felt, the material must be heavy synthetic felt 4mm+, so polypropylene(or polyester) stiff felt.

I checked mine it was a no go. Mine also has very little in the way of fabric. The craft store near me also was a no go. The only felt they had was floppy like the .33c sheets.

I'm not sure maybe I'm screwing it up. I cut some the size of a lid, some the size of the small side of the ring, some the size of the larger side of the ring. All of them popped out when tightening the ring. I'm assuming it's because it's not rigid enough. Fusing them together helped but still didn't work 100% the idea has serious potential though. Each lid would cost around $.05 per filter including the polyfill.

The felt i use is a dollar per yard so ya they are pennies each.

Man do you have a michaels, or joanns fabric, or hobby lobby?

I hit Walmart, Jo Ann and a local mom and pop. Hobby lobby and Michaels are 45 mins from me. I'm hoping to get there this weekend.

Nice write-up. Please don't take this as me criticizing, but what benefit does using the polyfil and felt have over just clam-shelling a metal lid with hole in between two layers of USPS tyvek envelopes? This is how I've been doing them for years. I'm open to changing things up if for some reason the felt has better results, but they'd have to be better to justify the cost of materials. I can get 10-12 lids out of each USPS tyvek mailers, and they're free.

Have you had success without using any foil? Nice lid setup and thanks for sharing.

I always use foil. Just an extra precautiin but foiless shouldnt be a problem as long as filters arent getting soaked
