Do you have a pic of yours? Are they large? The type photo on Wikipeida looks about 4 or 5 inch across.

I’ll have to dig around in my galleries. They average around 5-7 inches and can get quite big on later flushes. I had a bunch I forgot about and the third or forth flush had about 6 fruits 10-12 inches tall:

When I’m not on my phone I’ll find some Normal size ones. I can’t say how they look any different than cubes… they are prettier? I think I remember they tend to have little white specs on the caps. A Vendor used to describe them as tall…

Wow I had no idea there was a sub cubensis.

Psilo I think I got one of those from you way back, just labeled Argentina. Grew some super nice mushrooms that look kinda similar.

Haven’t eaten any but looks wise these were one of my favorites.

Subcubensis was the first species I grew way back in the day from a headshop syringe, it's totally identical to run of the mill cubensis. Just smaller spores.

AKA - I just label my Ps. SubCubensis “Argentina”

I’m glad that print did well for you. Those beautiful fruits you posted look like the ones I grew:

I’m remembering now that the caps were very meaty - thick and heavy.

Uh somehow I have a print labeled Argentina and I wrote ps on it so I'm assuming it's from you and also subcubensis. I think you sent it a couple years ago when I asked about sfds.

I think it's gonna jump to the front of the line. To go on plates next.

I got to scratching my head about this because I could not find any spore vendors offering Ps. SubCubensis var. Argentinian, however I eventually found a discussion of it on an old Shroomery post:

I’m sure that when I got the spores originally I was told it was a SubCubensis - to be honest I can’t remember who gave it to me. It may have been that Shroomery legend azure…

Spores said NSS from a local vendor in SA.  They took a long time to produce pins, and as you can see there was a lot of that fluffy myc overgrowth.

On one of those bags I peeled off the myc, got about 10g and ate it fresh.  Had a fun evening playing games and listening to EDM.  Peeling off the cloudy myc made no difference to pinning, both bags pinned at the same time and the peeled bag grew back the myc even as the pins got bigger.  The peeled one is the sparser one so I wonder if peeling had anything to do with it.

Wow those are really fat. That's pretty unique for nat isn't it? They are usually very tall.

They might be Penis Envy. But hey, you have shrooms!

P. Natalensis is from South Africa. I wonder if you can just go out and hunt some. I would try if they lived where I live, even though I have some.

I can send you a slice of the one P. Nat print I have, if you want. I was going to send you some Tyvek or filter stickers anyway, since you said you can't get those there.

Yeah those also look like cubes to me, but the colors of the caps make me think it's possible they are some fat nattys

I also have a giveaway going right now in the marketplace with 5 prints left I can definitely send you one

So you are saying the natalensis overlay is active? I keep seeing speculation on this thread that it is active, but no first hand reports. Any estimate of the potency?

I assume, as a newb, that peeling the overlay once pinning starts would be very bad?

So, to be clear- I am a newb to all this and will welcome any and all advice- keep in mind that I am a newb in your responses and maybe include details that seem obvious to you... They will likely NOT be obvious to me.

I got a print of Natalensis, and after much reading here I managed to go from print, to agar to LC TO GRAIN.

12 days ago I prepared shoeboxes according to shaperdreaming's SFF shoebox tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26043820
I only deviated in that I used CVG instead of straight coir, and in some (most) of the boxes I reduced the amount of spawn:substrate to one pint spawn  to 3 pints substrate instead of a 50:50 mix - this was based on comments in this thread stating a lower ratio of spawn may be better.

The substrate was at what the tek calls 'just under' field capacity- squeezing it hard yields a few drops... the top layer I then put on was thin but misted heavily after put in and leveled. The boxes have not been opened since assembly- after 12 days the substrate seems to be heavily colonized, and on most of them bright white 'popcorn' seems to be popping up on the surface - some more than others. I put a temperature/humidity monitor in one of the boxes hanging over the substrate-temperature varies from 75-85 degrees F, and humidity is staying in high 90%  range (currently 99.2% assuming my sensor is reliable) -

I am assuming the white 'popcorn' is the start of the formation of the overlay, which will cover the top prior to pinning?

I understand there are a lot of variables- but does this sound normal for 12 days? How much longer before pinning is typical at this stage?

The shoeboxes have not  been opened or fanned and misted since they were put together- as the Tek says that is not needed- but that tek is for cubensis, not natalensis- which some people on here have said needs more FAE- am I making a mistake by not giving them more FAE?

When I made the boxes I had leftover spawn, so for the heck of it I grabbed an airtight tupperware bowl with a clamp on gasketed lid and prepared it similarly- but put two holes in the lid covered with filter disks- (The substrate and spawn plus top layer filled it nearly to the brim). It also colonized fast, but the myc does not seem to be impinging on the top layer yet- nothing visible on the surface... I thought maybe the top layer was too dry, so I did open it and spray it a few days ago but nothing breaking the surface yet - I am not sure what to do when growth does start on the surface, since there is no room between the top layer and the lid- should I put a clear bag over it to let it fruit? Any ideas why it seems to be constrained under the top layer so far? Should I try removing it from container and putting in a SGFC? If I do put it in a SGFC should I dunk and roll it in vermiculite like I would a brf cake?

Lots of questions, sorry- did I mention I was new to this?

Post some pictures!

Everything here sounds good, just be ready for the overlay once it starts. You'll be thinking "how the hell is a pin supposed to make it through all that?" but just trust that they will. I used to think they required dung, but that definitely isn't true - though it will increase your yields. I've never done a run without misting/fanning (even with cubes) so I can't really tell you how well it works... the natals don't seem to mind a bit of neglect though. I've left some contaminated cakes in my spare room over a week or so, just to find them covered in fruits and no mold. If you plan on printing, it's better to take your caps sooner than later (at least with mine) as most of the spores have dropped by the time they're fully opened.

YUS the fluff is active, probably about as potent as the fruits (though I didnt weigh mine when I tried it). It would be cool to get a strain that ONLY overlays... kinda like enigma, but with fuzz instead of brain-blobs

Also 85°F may be a bit high (but I'm sure they wont mind). Do you have a decent climate-control system? I'd drop it to 75-80° max for the fruiting run, that's about what mine have gotten and they loved it. From what I've seen, higher temperatures will make less dense + faster-growing fruits... does anybody know how it effects the overlay?

Keep us updated, I wish you the best of luck!

These are the final snakes from this block... I love you they'll race each other. Total dry weight: 33.5g (from 5 flushes)

Someone on this thread many hundreds of posts back said they made tea from it and it was active. Someone else a few posts later confirmed it. I think not as much as shrooms, but it's not trash. I wouldn't throw it away.

Here's how to use the advanced search:
