Split culture cultivation.

Just a curious idea, that i'm sure has been covered before.. What would happen if you started a culture on a petri dish of 4 different strains, lets say Pearl, Grey, Blue, and Pink oyster mushrooms and had them in an even pattern. cut a wedge so it included each four strains of mycelium, and spawned that onto rye?

Would only one dominant dominant strain take over? Would they somehow "cross breed"?

Well, are they completely different species or are they all the same just different varieties? What if two were the same species but different varieties? Would they grow 'into' each other?

Well let me recap this if I can remember correctly.. Well do you have cultures of already isolated strains? Cuz if so then you already have two mated hyphae which means they wouldnt mate with the other cultures. Now if you start with spores then maybe just maybe some how some thing would happen. But the strains you mentioned are not compatible. I dont know that for a fact though.

Hypha can fuse in a process called anastomosis, but I don't know if this can happen across different species.

Here is a nice hyphal fusion movie.

Anastomosis probably wouldn't work in your case. Here's something about it:

Quote:

Whereas sexual mating requires different genotypes at a mating type locus, hyphal anastomosis requires identity at certain other loci, often several loci.
