incubation and tyvek
    #2757923 - 06/02/04 08:16 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

i have worked with grain for awile now with some success. my jars are taking a lot longer to colonize than other fellow shroomers on the forum. i wasnt using a filter disk (tyvek) until today, i changed my lids to tyvek. my incubation chamber is a homemade martha stewart closet. my question is, do i have to fan my incubation closet? and if i do, wouldnt that defeat the purpose of having an enclosed chamber? keeping contams out?

Your using a Martha for incubating?

i stacked two racks, wrapped plastic around it and cut out flaps for easy reach in access. it holds about 40 jars. a blanket covers it so light doesn't enter. that is why i'm asking about gas exchange..is there a better method for incubation that I should try with the tyvek?

Echo^^^^^
Reserve the Martha for fruiting and go tub in tub for colonizing.
Grains need a hefty amount of STERILE air exchange for colonization.
I doubt that a quart jar of grain would even finish at all if it were totally sealed up. Tyvek is great stuff! Just keep in mind that it is a one way fabric that will actually allow moisture to go through one way and not the other. One would think that this means you apply them in a way that retains the moisture content inside the jar,but IMHO it should be done the opposite. If water molecules can penetrate so can contamination thus defeating the purpose entirely. Put it on so that the moisture can get out and not in ,and regulate moisture loss by the size of the hole in the lid.

You dont need to fan during inncubation, nor do you have to worry as much about how clean the air is since you are filtering air exchange via the tyvek.

Hope this helps!
MYKEY

you dont have to fan the closet.. you could always set up some kind of filtered air exchange.. i dont imagine it would hurt.. I keep my jars in a cooler with no air exchange.. i get full colonized in about 2 weeks.

I'm on my first attempt at using tyvek envelopes in place of the jars lid. i innoced through the tyvek and covered the hole with bandage tape. I find my colonization is faster with tyvek but my contam rates are also higher. then again my technique is far from sterile.

if i dont have to fan during incubation how can i give grains a hefty amount of air exchange? this has been my downfall(fast colonization) so excuse my persistance on this.

Is it just me or do you only have one hole in the lid. But then you cover the hole with a bandaid after knocking them so how do they get air? Around the bandaid? Or maybe it breathes... Couldnt hurt to have another hole or two could it?
