Really unimpressed with this culture I cloned off an F1 grow from some wild spores. It really does not like the limited FAE it gets with my set up. We'll see how it does outdoors in the summer but it does not look like a good candidate for indoor cultivation with my current set up.
This is second flush and yield has been about half of what I normally get with more "domesticated" spores

RE all the discussion about jar filters, I'm going to reply to everyone who asked a question here in this one post, and then moving forward will continue the discussion over on the thread Nektar61 created, just so no one goes unanswered (https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27575276/vc/1#27575276).

Yeah I also agree with this on my end. I think I'll also try those thicker SFD. Where are you getting them?
Syringe filters work great but they're just so damn bulky
I purchased the thicker ones from shroomsupply. Fungi Perfecti and Mycosupply have them as well. All of them look the same and are advertised as filtering to 0.3 microns.
Quote:
bigfootscreepyuncl said: I'm curious: what's the benefit of the SFDs over polyfill? I've ben using poly with really good results plus my wife will usually pack the lids for me if I give her a foot rub lol
People have been using polyfill for decades with great success. My only issue with it is that it is an art and not a science on how tightly you stuff the hole with polyfill and that will change your filtration rate and your gas exchange rate, so you can't really get perfect consistency. The fewer variables I have to deal with when trying to diagnose a problem, the better, so that's why I like SFDs.

Scrimshaw said: Add me to the list of the sticky SFD skeptics.
I had a stretch of trich that I was driving myself crazy over since the agar was looking good and my control plates in front of my hood were coming back clean.
I can’t say with certainty that the SFDs were letting anything through, but I’m about to go back to polyfill for a little bit to see if I notice anything.
This is what has been happening to me. I have NEVER once had trich in any of my jars or tubs until recently. All 4 of my last APE tubs trich'd out.

On that thread you said you have trouble with these, right? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089CNN95D?
They are listed as .25 micron holes.
Here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25459303#25459303
Bod says:
"0.02 micron 1/10th the width of the smallest known bacteria. 0.2-0.22 micron filters are sterile filters"
Seems odd that little of a difference from .22 to .25 would be the difference.
But I believe Bod. Not only does he throw up tons of fat dick tubs, but he's a beer scientist, preventing contam is his day job, right?
I also think maybe some vendors like on Amazon or eBay might lie about their hole size. Or not know because the Chinese wholesaler says it is so.
I have a microscope and a tiny microscopic measuring tape slide. So I'll check what I get.
I'm going to try using the .2 micron cult filters I ordered, but also try other jars Tyvek glued on with RTV. Tyvek is supposed to keep out viruses, but breathe. Viruses are much smaller than mold spores and bacteria.
Should be a semi-scientific test, since I'm using T2 and T3s cloned from shrooms to send to grain now.
I WILL SOLVE THIS CONAM SHIT IN MY CULT LIFE. grrrrrr.
Yes, I have been having trouble with those filters. I don't think .22 to .25 would make a difference and I also don't really trust product claims from vendors on Amazon. I doubt the stick-on filters are truly 0.2 microns, but I could be wrong. The most common SFDs offered by all the big-name mushroom cult suppliers are 0.3 microns. If that's what they are all selling, I'm inclined to think it's acceptable. If you look at mycobags from the mushcult vendors, they are mainly 0.5 microns and that is what most people use from what I have seen, except for people who are growing things like Shiitake which have an extremely long consolidation time, and in that case, people recommend 0.25 micron mycobags. So I'm inclined to think 0.5 microns is just fine for what we grow here.
I too am VERY curious about using Tyvek. I'll do some searching on that and hope that someone chimes in on your other thread about it.
And lastly, since this is the cult pic thread, here is a pic of the jar lids I made last night with the new, thicker SFDs:

Note to self: Two of the 00 capsules (~.75g) of B+ will kind of melt your face in the morning. A bit more than I was planning for! Whoooopsies.
Things are happening! Let's start with a new Humidity Chamber and some crazy spikey mycelium from a maza cake (I think it's a maza cake...it might be a costa rican cake -- I had a bit of a labeling fuck up when I made them):

Just a few of the newly transferred a2g jars (there are many more):

Some plates ready to go to grain (before yeast) and a cloudy plate from my "fuck-ups" stack that nonetheless seems to be enjoying the newly added yeast in my pours!
One of a few zipblocks starting to pin:

Sadly there are a few horror show ziplock bags that I'm almost scared to post here -- I knew they would be bad when I made them but, well... you'll hear about them soon enough I'm sure .
SO MANY THINGS. I was going to be more productive this morning until I ended up higher than balls, lol. Let's just say mid-walk with my dog I thought to myself, this is a whoops morning! Buckling seatbelt! On the agenda today: -Actual work (sad) -Transfers (yay!) to plates and to grain -Maybe another run of oats!

.5 micron filter bags are for blocks of sawdust, .2 micron are for grain bags.
@nektar- i dont think they make a .02 micron is even a thing but I could be wrong. .2 is small enough to sterilize water as it filters through which is why whatman filters are .2
.25 micron is good most sfds are listed at .3

Had some bacterial bags fully colonized but pissing metabolites, put a bag ontop and just fruited them for the sake of it.

The filter discs I had were some random ones off Amazon, never tried them again since tyvek works so well. I do have a lid I was given with the thin circle sticker type filter and it works great.
I use the free envelopes from the post office. Just trace the lid and cut it out. I write on them so I usually run out of room and change them after 5-6 runs but I have a few that are over a year old.

Man, I’m cheap! And I was trying to find the tyvec envelopes at the post office… all I found were cardboard ones?.. what gives? Do they make different ones for different places?
I got frustrated and just started using lc with jars with a bandaid on top, they colonize in like 5-8 days, and I just try to not forget about em… it’s working a bit but I wanna try the tyvec…
Thanks aka!

Have you ever used the DuPont Tyvek used in home construction? I have quite a bit of that laying around and would like to put it to good use.
Once you fit your jar with tyvek do you only use the lid rings? Sorry, I'm hungover and my brain is struggling pretty hard today lol

Haha, yeah that's a creepy one
I built the flowhood at my parents' place because well - "Dads" you know... They're 60+ years old and have ALL the tools you need.
I used his workshop and then left the flowhood in one of the bedrooms that has all the old toys laying around... so the 20+ years old doll which got its head chewed-up by dozen kids was there too!
I forgot to move it before the picture. I was too excited to take the photo, I mean I finally had a flowhood after dreaming about it for 7 years
