Couple Nat x Playa steer manure/compost shoeboxes @ 99% starting to exude their metabolites. Last couple of projects with these genetics yielded some ugly nuclear power. 2nd pic is my 2.5gal novelty jar coming along (same substrate, both without casing or top layer due to sheer laziness). Love decorating my SAB stand with novelty grows.
So cool! I too am trying to cross Nat with various cubes. In the grains they do fuse, but when I spawned, so far I have Natal x Melmac revert stall and Nat x ape contam (I very rarely have contam with coco). My nat x Long APE grains seem promising though. I hope yours fruits!

Hey Nichrome, would you be willing to trade a playa uvita? I am very interested in it.

What is playa uvita? Wild something, found among cubes, but not on poo, unlike poo, but maybe not a cube, being sequenced soon? That's all I know.
I've seen mentions here and there but can't find a thread.
Thank you.

What I know is that Nichrome found it in Costa Rica (correct me if I am wrong), and for a supposed wild cube it has a different physical appearance. Possibly, it is a small deviation from cubes like Natalensis is. don't know about the effects though. Natalensis is currently my favorite mushroom in terms of effects, hopefully PU is also a different experience

Finally got some caps that opened fully on flush (4 or 5?). Took a couple tissue samples from one that was very similar to some of yours with the wrinkled stipes/phallic caps. I'm hoping to get like a pure-bred Natalenvy (claiming it, unless someone said it first) pheno, as I've seen many people on here speak of simply crossing them with PE. But we all know these can look very dickish on their own!
Thank you! I too am chasing phenotypes that resemble PE. I look forward to seeing how your experiments turn out.

It certainly seems to help! But I still think genetics matter more. I was very lucky my first time around, then I had a few months where my tubs pumped out overlay no matter what I did (thick top layer, no top layer, exposed grain, potting soil, peat). It wasn't until I went back to spore that I started having better luck.

I really do wonder why they bruise different colors. I want to say the darker ones are stronger, but that could easily be a placebo effect/in my head.

I have print somewhere and I think I can help you with a swab. That's probably the next cube I'm going to start.

Natalensis mycelium. T1 from odissey's sporeprint (Thanks!). I'd almost given up hopes on it, after weeks and different agar recipes and consistencies with no germination. I raised the incubator temperature at 22°C and it seemed to have done the trick! (Thanks nosf3r4tu!)
I've done a T2 with it, then cut out the thicker part of the mycelium (bottom left) and finally innoc'ed a rye jar.
Also, I don't know if there is any incidence, but this was a PDA antibiotic agar plate - the last one I had left.
This mycelium looks a lot like my Mex. A

I'm following A.k.a's advice, and used Josex' poke to make a LC with this plate (you can even see the poke).

A.k.a said: I also think it’s genetic.
I ran my first culture and a couple clones from it sooo many times so many ways and it always had gnarly overlay. Very potent but low yields.
Then I went back to spore and ran the most tomentose growth I could find and got a decent culture.
Natalensis mycelium. T1 from V.L's sporeprint (Thanks!). Looks very different from above - I've used it to innoc a jar of rye.

Final one, a month old MS agar plate with blueing mycelium. The photo doesn't do justice, but the color is beautiful!

Odissey this makes me wonder how many "slight deviations" of cubensis (and others) there actually are out there. Eventually I'll have to try them out! (And subcubensis)

Man species naming is a weird one...
Has anyone successfully crossed Natalensis with Cubensis? I remember adrenochrome's playa/nat tub that was a questionable cross
I also have a playa print that I haven't gotten around to yet. I don't think I realized it was such an interesting one. That might be my next in line after APE

You may already be aware of this but in case not there is something from Argentina called a Psilocybe SubCubensis. It looks and behaves like a normal cube. People say it has a “friendly” high. I’ve grown tons of them and like them a lot (but I’ve never eaten any).

If you scroll way way down in this page you will find a phylogeny tree that shows they are just a branch off from each other.

Do you have a pic of yours? Are they large? The type photo on Wikipeida looks about 4 or 5 inch across.

I’ll have to dig around in my galleries. They average around 5-7 inches and can get quite big on later flushes. I had a bunch I forgot about and the third or forth flush had about 6 fruits 10-12 inches tall:

When I’m not on my phone I’ll find some Normal size ones. I can’t say how they look any different than cubes… they are prettier? I think I remember they tend to have little white specs on the caps. A Vendor used to describe them as tall…
