micro-contamination
    #2757314 - 06/02/04 05:20 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I have two casings that got contaminated with a kind of green mold and I am somewhat reluctant to throw these away. There is no suspect growth, just specks of green spores scatered all over. These specks are real tiny, about the size of an hyphal knot. I used a dropper to kill the spores with a solution of bleach but every day I get half a dozen new spots.
How much mycelium does the mold need to produce spores? Is it a well established network or just isolated colonies? Could such a small amount of mold poison my crop? This has been going on for a couple of days now, the first casing has mushrooms about 1" tall and the other is pinning. For now hunting for mold is easy, I presume it will get increasingly difficult to find those spots in a forest of growing mushrooms. I was hoping to save a least the first flush. Any thoughts on my situation?

Welll if you put too much bleach... and let it sit with no air exchange in the jar it could be bruising... all it needs to do is oxidize and it will change color.

Be careful of the contam.

Do you have any pictures?

How , if it is, is the mold growing now?

I dont think it's growing from the inside, I might be wrong... The mold seems to grow on the pieces of vermiculite/coir rather than inside the casing. The piece in the pictures is actualy pretty bad compared with the other spots, usually it is only one green dot or two. Once bleached that particular location will be ok but more spores will just pop up somewhere else. The damn thing is hard to kill.

A couple of things to add;
That type of mold is only green in the areas where conidia [fruiting structures] are produced.  There could by hyphae [vegetative growth] that will be invisible amongst the mycelium.  Treating green specks might be a little like trying to remove mushrooms from a lawn by mowing them over. . .
Even though you're using bleach, the very act of a droplet hitting those green specks will disperse mold spores.  It sounds like you're doing the right thing with the dropper.  Be gentle!
On the other hand, I'd probably be doing the same thing:  Just trying to stave off the green until those nice pins can do their thing :wink:
You don't want to jostle things too much at this point, but can any of the green pieces of casing be picked out without damaging the network too much?  It really looks like the first flush is going to be great, and with that small degree of mold I wouldn't worry about it.  The second flush might be a different story :frown:

Here's an update on my problem. The first batch is not going to make it, no second flush for sure.  It looks like the contamination runs only on the surface, would recasing be of any use? After the first flush I could scrape the top layer, dunk in a bleach solution and recase with plain vermiculite (the mold starts on the coir).

I added a picture of my other infected casing, I guess this time I won  :grin:

That's a good idea and probably the last resort regarding that casing....
