Skip Pasturization with CaO solution?
    #2753447 - 06/01/04 02:36 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

In stamets book he claims that one may make a solution using two pounds of Calcium oxide per 50 gallons of water and soak your straw in this instead of using the traditional ways to pasturize. I do not have the equipment to pasturize and I am looking for an alternative. Would this method work for Oyster mushrooms?

Would questions like this be better suited for the cultivation forums or for here? I am refering to this process for Oyster mushrooms so I figured here would be the best.. but feel free to move it.

Yes it works. Bleach works also. Lime works. Even a warm/hot water soak for 4 days would work. There are many ways of growing. Pink oysters dont even need sterile conditions, do to the fact that they are some tuff as mofo's that would just eat the mold along with the straw.

Okay. once I get grain spawn and i'm ready to transfer to pasturized straw, how sterile does it have to be when i do the transfer? Do I still need to use a flow hood/glove box? Or can I just transfer in the open ?

How long for it to colonize and how long till fruit after grain transfer?

Can I use just a regular trashbag to put the straw in? Does it matter if its clear or not? Do I have to sterilize the trash bag?

Well I am ghetto as hell when it comes to my endevores. So what my buddy and I do is take the straw hoist it out of the barrel with a come-a-long let cool on a plywood table out in the open. Take the spawn and mix a handful at the time with our grubby ass dirt merchant farmer hands. Then stuff into the plastic ducting. We only do very well like this when using pink oysters though. Blues/pearls/greys seem to be a little to slow to hang in the ghetto, the thug molds seem to kick there asses.

Trash bag works let colonise on floor to make a wide flat surface area, the more the better. Poke holes in it for propper gas exchange.

Lay it flat? I thought it was to be hung from the ceiling.. Or is this just untill its colonised? Can you get to the others questions too mr. Sheik?

Where can I get some of these cultures? Would you be willing to trade, anyone? I would like Pink, blue and grey if possible.

HA HA HA HA why sher ya can lil fella HA HA HA they will be ready soon. You lay it flat only while it colonises. Then you have two large flat sides to fruit off of. Any thing else you need to ask Mr. Sheik before he goes off to play hide the mushroom with his harem?
